We've been helping students find the right postgraduate course for over a decade.
Guildford is a town within the county of Surrey in southern England. It is a short journey from London, around 25 miles away. There is one university in Guildford as well as a number of specialised smaller higher education campuses.
Originally founded in the Saxon period, Guildford has had a significant history. It was an early site of the Royal Mint and chosen as the location of an important castle following the Norman Conquest.
Today Guildford is an attractive urban centre, offering modern restaurants and high-street shopping alongside historic streets and buildings.
Despite the town’s relatively small size, postgraduate students in Guildford enjoy access to a range of entertainment venues whilst living and studying in pleasant surroundings with a rich heritage.
Somewhat appropriately, famous local landmarks include the town’s original 14th-century Guildhall as well as the remains of Guildford Castle (now part of a public park). Guildford is also an excellent base from which to visit London, with regular rail connections to the capital.
Guildford’s sole university is the University of Surrey, situated on a large campus at the edge of the town. Surrey became a university in 1966, but traces its origins to 1891. It performs well in national comparisons and has been placed within the top 10 UK universities by rankings that emphasise student satisfaction and career prospects.
In addition to the University of Surrey, Guildford is home to a campus of the University of Law as well as the Guildford School of Acting, both of which offer specialised postgraduate programmes.
Guildford has earned a reputation as a hotbed for video game development, with several studios and publishers based in the town. These include EA Games, Criterion and Media Molecule. Other major companies in Guildford include Philips Healthcare and Allianz.
On the outskirts of Guildford is the Surrey Research Park, an initiative of the University of Surrey. This complex is home to a diverse range of innovative businesses.
