If you have earned a first degree with an information systems focus and are interested in following up with a Master's degree in the same discipline, then you've come to the right place.
The M.Sc. Information Systems allows you to consolidate your knowledge of e-commerce, business information systems, IT management, knowledge management and other topical subjects.
This degree programme involves original research and working on hands-on projects.

Features

In addition to the courses taught in this programme you will also have the opportunity to attend courses from the related programmes of study, Business Administration, Computer Science, IT Security, IT Law and Media and Communication.
Moreover, the Language Centre offers many language courses – in many cases certified up to UNIcert® IV, the highest attainable level – allowing you to perfect your knowledge of a foreign language.

Syllabus

While studying this programme you should gain a minimum of 100 ECTS credits and write a Master's thesis. Out of the 100 credits, 35 are earned in compulsory electives, of which 7 must be earned in a seminar; at least 10 credits come from the Methods modules and a minimum of 18 from Principles of Business and Economics.

Methods
The Methods module group teaches you the principles of mathematics, which are important for business and economics; empirical research methods; decision theory; operations research and fundamental concepts and techniques used in information systems. In the assessments, you will be expected to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and show that you have the methodology to understand the state of the art of research in the subject area and are able to apply the it to problems in the real world.

Principles of Business and Economics
Principles of Business and Economics deals with the theory and empirical studies in business and household finance, computational representation, and with the control of resources and dispositions in businesses and household, as well as their taxation. The module also imparts knowledge on international, market-oriented control, strategic and organisational management of companies, as well as marketing theory and empirical studies.

Information Systems
Information Systems consists of the modules Theory and Empirical Research and Methods, Models and Tools for Analysis, Development, Implementation and Use of Information Systems and Information and Communication Technologies in the context of their application. The subject area is interdisciplinary in nature and comprises the socio-economic dimension of IT applications.

Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies
The Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies modules consist of theory and empirical studies of subjects closely related to information systems. These include courses from the Master's programme in Media and Communication (e.g. cross-media concepts, design of computer-aided educational settings, etc.), from Computer Science (IT law, media law and legal informatics), from Business Administration (e.g. marketing courses, social media management, entrepreneurial organisation, etc.) and from computer science (e.g. information management, software analysis, cloud computing, multimedia databases, information security).

Information on the Programme

The master programme Information Systems consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of information systems.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme Information Systems contains 18 credit points. This area covers the methodological and content-specific basics of information systems.
The Specialisation Section, where students altogether complete 48 credit points, includes modules from information systems and computer sciences as well as two specialisation seminars.
The Supplementary Section serves as an additional section to develop a more specific profile – either by deepening and specialising or by diversifying knowledge. Altogether an area of 24 credit points has to be completed, in which modules from business administration, economics and social sciences are available to students.

The Master Program in Business Information Systems enables students to take up challenging research in the interdisciplinary field with a major focus on information systems.
Information Systems becomes more and more important because of new and innovative technologies and more intensive networking of existing devices in particular. To develop, analyze, improve, and integrate these technologies in organizational structures, new methods and tools are required.
The field of Business Information Systems deals with the conception, development, implementation, and usage of computer-based information processing in organizations. To enable students to solve such problems and challenges, the Master Program of Business Information Systems in Hildesheim has five different specializations (listed below) which can be selected to get an individualized course profile.

About Mobile and Embedded Systems

The future of information and communication technology (ICT) is driven by mobile and networked embedded systems: tomorrow’s digital cities, Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) will all depend on embedded sensing of real-world phenomena, in-situ computation as well as automated information exchange and data distribution using machine-to-machine (M2M) com­munications between local and distributed control systems and machinery.

The ‘smart grid’ is one example of an application for future embedded systems, as it uses real-time sensing of the available renewable energy to determine where energy is to be routed across the power grid and controls intelligent machinery to increase production during peak times; this requires that internet-connected smart meters are installed in industrial plants and private homes alike to facilitate real-time sensing and control of technical systems.

Another exciting area of application for embedded systems is mobile and wearable technology, which allows users to access and manipulate information ‘on the go’ as the system provides relevant and timely information — indeed, this is one of the main purposes of mobile information technology such as smartphones and tablet computers. Additional meaning for this Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is generated by the context of the device, the user, the location and many more factors, all of which are sensed and computed by a plenitude of embedded sensors and collocated or connected systems.

Wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smart watches collect bio-physiological and health-related data to facilitate novel applications, including smart contact lenses and feedback systems for the learning of physical activities. At the same time, increasing cross-device interoperability means that users of head-mounted augmented reality and virtual reality displays can, for instance, use their entire smartphone screen as a keyboard and have the typed text displayed on augmented reality glasses.

1) Algorithms and Mathematical Modelling: This module teaches you about determinstic and stochastic algorithms, their implementation, evaluation and optimisation. You will acquire advanced knowledge of computer-based mathematical methods – particularly in the areas of algorithmic algebra and computational stochastics – as well as developing an in-depth expertise in mathematical modelling and complexity analysis of discrete and continuous problems.
2) Programming and Software Systems: This module imparts modern methods for constructing large-scale software systems, as well as creating and using software authoring, analysis and optimisation tools. In this module you will consolidate your knowledge of the various programming paradigms and languages, the structure of language processing systems, and learn to deal with parallelism in program procedures.
3) Information and Communication Systems: In this module you will study the interactions of the classic computer science areas of information systems and computer networks. This focus area represents an answer to the problem of increasing volume and complexity of worldwide information distribution and networks, and for the growing requirements on quality and performance of computer communication. Additionally, you will learn to transfer database results to multimedia data.
4) Intelligent Technical Systems: In this module you are acquainted with digital image and signal processing, embedded systems and applications of intelligent technical systems in industrial and assistance systems, which are necessary for production automation and process control, traffic control, medical and building technology. You will learn to develop complex applications using computer systems and deal with topics such as image reconstruction, camera calibration, sensor data fusion and optical measurement technology.
5) IT Security and Reliability: This module group is concerned with security and reliability of IT systems, e.g. in hardware circuitry and communication protocols, as well as complex, networked application systems. To ensure the secure operation of these systems you will learn design methodology, secure architectures and technical implementation of the underlying components.
