Our environmental science research is multidisciplinary, including subjects ranging from biology to geography and geosciences. We offer MPhil supervision in the following subjects areas associated with environment science:

Applied and environmental biology

We conduct research on organisms and processes of commercial and environmental importance, embracing experimental approaches that encompass genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology. Our research provides evidence for the underlying molecular and physiological processes that affect animal behaviour and physiology.

Our research is driven by the desire to develop new biological systems that address health, food, energy and water security. The applied nature of our work has led to the launch of successful spin-out companies, such as Geneius. These companies offer graduate employment opportunities and make a substantial contribution to the local economy. The commercial applications that result from our research range from natural products discovery and creation of novel antimicrobials and biopesticides to sustainable methods of reducing food spoilage.

Based in the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability (NIReS), our research laboratories include well-equipped molecular laboratories for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) amplification, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and facilities for the production of novel recombinant proteins, including protein engineering. Microbiological laboratories are equipped to Category 2 standard. We have the latest equipment for profiling plant leaf gas exchange and light use efficiency, high performance liquid chromatography, fluorescence and light microscopy and easy access to central facilities for confocal and electron microscopy, DNA sequencing, microarray analyses and proteomics. We also have a suite of licenced controlled environment rooms for growing transgenic plants and for housing quarantine invertebrate pests.

Applied and environmental biology research is based in the School of Biology and led by academic staff with international reputations.

Environmental change and management

We study long-term system evolution and change, developing knowledge relating to the Earth's surface and the processes that form its structure and function. We also study how human behaviour impacts on these systems and influences sustainable management.

Based in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, you will be part of an active research community of nearly 200 social science researchers. We pride our research on being the highest academic quality with an international focus, underpinned by a concern for informing public debate and contributing to public policy formulation.

You have the support of a marine science research community including 30 research students, six-10 post-doctoral scientists, six technicians and 13 full-time academic staff. This provides you with abundant opportunities to progress your scientific career, whether in industry or academia. Students have been successful at finding employment in industry, academia, government agencies and non-governmental organisations. You will also train to produce final projects of publishable quality.

Delivery

Modules are block taught, with intensive teaching weeks and weeks of private study. Each semester is 60 credits (in full-time mode). The intensive teaching weeks run Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm.

Teaching is delivered via lectures, seminars, practical sessions (in computer labs, on boats and shores) and personal supervision. Projects may be analytical, experimental, or field based, designed to give you the skills you need for future research.

The course finishes with a four month project. This is delivered in conjunction with consultancy partners in the UK or overseas.

Modules are delivered on the University's main campus but the Dove Marine Laboratory and the RV Princess Royal are also used as teaching venues.

The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences enjoys an international reputation for using the latest science to solve problems of global importance. Our research has significant relevance in non-academic settings and we regularly apply it through consultancy to industry, from the global offshore industry to local authorities and survey and engineering companies. Our International Spatial Planning MSc is an exciting and demanding course that is ideal if you want to work in spatial planning from an international perspective. It helps you translate academic and professional knowledge, understanding and skills in urban planning into a context suitable for a globalised economy and rapidly urbanising world.

The course seeks to engage you in the theoretical and practical context of planning in a broad range of countries. It helps prepare you for work as urban planning and development professional around the world.

For students from countries experiencing rapid economic development and urbanisation (with the physical and social challenges these produce), the course bridges the gap between the focused field of urban planning and the broader field of international development. It offers you the opportunity to relate the core learning directly to your own country's context, which is of particular value to international students.

Delivery

The course is full time and based at the central Newcastle campus. It consists of a range of compulsory modules designed to meet the professional requirements of the RTPI. Knowledge and skills are developed through a series of lecture-based modules and a dissertation.

The learning environment is informal and friendly and the approach to teaching offers a mix of theoretical and practical modules. We place strong emphasis on team and individual project work, allowing you to put your learning into practice. An optional field trip to a country in Asia, Africa or Latin America provides valuable practical project experience. The field trip is not included in the cost of the programme and costs around £900-1000 for two weeks.

To support international students to make the transition to UK higher education, a strong element of tutorial and seminar teaching runs throughout the programme.

Accreditation

This course is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). It is a combined qualification which allows graduates to progress towards Chartered Membership of the RTPI.
