The picturesque city of Geneva is the second largest in Switzerland, situated in the west of the country, near the border with France. It is home to the University of Geneva, as well as several other higher education institutes and around 30,000 students.
Geneva is an important city for international relations and cooperation, being the headquarters for bodies such as the World Trade Organisation and the International Red Cross. This makes Geneva an exciting and inspiring centre for postgraduate education, with excellent opportunities for personal and professional development.
The city is located in a part of Switzerland known for its natural beauty, with attractions including the stunning Lake Geneva and the nearby Alpine and Jura mountain ranges. The Jet d’Eau, a 140m-high lakeside plume of water is one of the tallest and most powerful fountains in the world, spraying some 7 tonnes of water into the air.
8km outside of Geneva is the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and its Large Hardon Collider – a must-visit for postgraduates interested in particle physics!
Geneva’s situation close to the French border also makes it a convenient hub from which to visit other parts of Europe, for academic or leisure purposes.
Geneva’s international profile extends to its university education. The University of Geneva is famous for its research and teaching in International Relations and related fields, and has welcomed large numbers of international scholars since its founding in 1559. Today it ranks as a world top 100 institution.
Other universities in Geneva also offer world renowned postgraduate programmes in Politics and International Relations, including the Geneva School of Diplomacy and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
As the home of dozens of international organisations, Geneva offers excellent career opportunities for ambitious postgraduates. The European headquarters of the United Nations is in Geneva, while the World Trade Organisation, International Red Cross, World Health Organisation and the World Intellectual Property Organisation are all based in Geneva, which is an important location for non-profits and NGOs from around the world.
Geneva is also a significant business and banking hub. Caterpillar, Hewlett Packard and Rolex are among the companies based in Geneva.
