Overview

Entry to the actuarial profession is by a demanding series of examinations, but the rewards after qualifying are great. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK has four levels of examinations to qualify. The first level, the Core Technical (CT) subjects, are taught in our BSc or MSc in Actuarial Science and lead to exemptions from CT1 to CT8.

Leading on from this, our established and successful MSc in Actuarial Management (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-actuarial-management/ ) covers the more advanced actuarial subjects and offers exemptions from the syllabuses of the Core Application subjects CA1 and CA3 and Specialist Technical subjects ST2, ST4, ST5, ST6 and ST9.

Students will typically study CA1, CA3 and up to three ST subjects (two ST subjects are needed to satisfy the profession's requirements).

Taking our MSc in Actuarial Management is a great way to speed your progress to this most prestigious of careers - it's designed to take you almost all of the way to qualification. A student who graduates with a full set of exemptions from Heriot-Watt (CT, CA and ST subjects) will only have three more examinations to pass, as well as gaining the necessary work experience, to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Programme duration

The PG Diploma comprises the taught coursework component leading to exemptions from CA1 and the ST professional subjects and takes 9 months to complete. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.

The programme is also available to be studied on a part-time basis, over a maximum of 4 years.

Programme content

In the taught element of the programme each student takes eight semester-long courses. These are linked in pairs, one per semester. One pair of courses – covering Actuarial Risk Management – is compulsory and corresponds to subject CA1. It applies the principles of actuarial mathematics to a wide range of financial and insurance settings. Students choose a minimum of two pairs of courses from a list including Life Office Management (subject ST2), Pensions (subject ST4), Investment and Finance (subject ST5), Derivatives (subject ST6) and Enterprise Risk Management (subject ST9).

The choice of courses may depend on the coverage of actuarial subjects in the student’s first degree. Depending on individual circumstances, other optional courses may be made available, for example courses from the MSc in Actuarial Science or in other disciplines. However, students choosing to take three pairs of courses, potentially leading to exemptions from three ST subjects, will have an exceptionally broad range of employment opportunities.

Students may graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the 2nd semester, after completing the taught coursework component leading to exemptions form CA1 and the ST professional subjects. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.The dissertation is an extended research project, with regular supervision, undertaken in the summer. The diploma takes 9 months and the MSc takes 1 year full time and part time options are available.

As such it is also an opportunity for candidates from a different Engineering background to develop key Mechanical Engineering knowledge and skills required for their professional development. A key objective of the programme is to be an accredited route to becoming Chartered Engineer.

This programme makes use of masters-level courses in the Energy Sciences and Manufacture & Design complemented with specialist courses from relevant MSc courses offered by the institute. We have seen a growing need for an advanced mechanical engineering programme at the request of applicants, and our industry partners. This programme has been specifically developed to meet this need and to encourage students of this field into further learning.

The Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. 6 of these places are reserved for applicants to this programme in the first instance. Course Structure and duration:

The course requires full-time attendance at the beautiful Edinburgh campus of Heriot-Watt University, and consists of eight taught modules and a research project. .

Teaching is through a variety of methods; material is introduced in lectures and then developed through independent reading, tutorial support, group discussion and seminar presentation. Each module is assessed through a combination of an exam and written coursework.

The project is carried out between May and August, and leads to a report that is an original contribution to our understanding of applied psychology. Students may either use the research literature in psychology to develop a set of policies and guidelines that address an issue of importance in business or society, or they may carry out an empirical study that gathers data to test a research hypothesis.

Successful completion of eight taught modules (without the research project) leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma; successful completion of four modules to a Postgraduate Certificate.

Entry requirements:

A good honours degree in a psychology related course (2.2 level or above, or the equivalent standard if your degree is from outside the UK). Applicants with a degree in a subject other than psychology should have studied the subject at introductory level (please contact us for further advice about this requirement).

Applications from outside the UK are welcomed. Students whose first language is not English must have an IELTS score of 6.5.

Programme duration

MSc programmes last for one year (September to August inclusive) and include a substantial research project.

The Diploma covers the same classes as the MSc and includes a short project but lasts for just 9 months (September to May inclusive). Students admitted to the Diploma programme and who perform well in the taught courses may be invited to transfer to the appropriate MSc programme.

The Postgraduate Diploma/MSc programme is accredited by the Institute of Brewing & Distilling.

If your first language is not English, or your first degree was not taught in English, we’ll need to see evidence of your English language ability. The minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. Overview

The MSc Business Psychology programme (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-business-psychology/ ) at Heriot-Watt University is one of the longest established of its kind outside North America. The programme is open to graduates from any discipline, and is aimed at people aspiring towards, or already pursuing a career in business. It equips graduates with theoretical knowledge of psychology and related practical skills to enhance effectiveness at individual, team and organisational levels within any business setting. You will study courses covering different aspects of management (leadership, diversity, organisational culture and organisational change) with the remaining courses covering human factors, marketing, coaching and research methods. You can choose to conduct your research project in any area relevant to Business Psychology giving you the opportunity to tailor your studies to fit your interests and professional needs. The programme has an international focus, and graduates are therefore well prepared to work anywhere within the global market.

The programme can be studied on-campus, either full-time, or part-time. Alternatively, the distance learning format allows you to (continue to) work full-time anywhere in the world. MSc students take all the courses below. Diploma students take all the courses except the project. Students may also take individual courses on a continuing professional development basis, leading to a letter of confirmation.

Study abroad option

Students have the opportunity to spend their second semester at either our Dubai or Malaysia campus (Subject to meeting academic and visa conditions).

Students come from a variety of backgrounds, both academic and professional. Some come directly from undergraduate study. Others already work in a business setting, bringing with them practical experience in a variety of business-related roles. Some students come from other professional backgrounds but with an interest in converting to a career in business. Students from all over the world come to Heriot-Watt to study Business Psychology. Therefore, as a student you will be part of, contribute to, and learn from a community comprising individuals from a wide range of professional and academic backgrounds and cultures.

Programme duration

The full time on campus MSc programme lasts for one year (September to August inclusive) and includes a substantial research project. The Diploma covers the same classes as the MSc but lasts for just nine months. (September to May inclusive). The part time MSc programme is of two years’ duration, while the part time Diploma lasts 21 months.

Students studying via distance learning have a maximum of seven years to complete the MSc, or four years to complete the Diploma.

Climate change is recognised as having potentially huge impacts on the environment and on society. The study of the causes and impacts of climate change and the measures required to mitigate the impacts and adapt is complex. It is essential that scientists, engineers and environmental decision-makers understand the fundamentals of the causes, impacts and management measures involved in dealing with such important issues.

The MSc course offers one core module to introduce climate change causes and impacts (Semester 1) and reviews the possible mitigation and adaptation measures in a second (Semester 2). The course structure allows for three optional and relevant modules each semester from amongst the University's postgraduate syllabus so that a 'tailored' course can be constructed.

For potential optional modules please refer to the module/subject areas available and listed in other School MSc courses, specifically those of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and School of the Built Environment. Advice will be given on the most appropriate modules available from the different Schools of the University in topics ranging across scientific, engineering, economics and management modules.

It is essential that scientists, engineers and environmental decision-makers understand the fundamentals of the causes, impacts and management measures involved in dealing with such important issues. The course specialises in the challenges facing the marine environment and is part of the University's programme of teaching and research in climate change related issues.
