The MSc European Integration and Development (EuroMaster) is an advanced Master, interdisciplinary programme offered by the Institute for European Studies (IES) in cooperation with the faculty of Economic, Political and Social Sciences and the Solvay Business School.

The EuroMaster is an interdisciplinary programme taught in English geared towards an international range of young and mid-level professionals as well as advanced students from across the political sciences. It provides students with advanced academic training across a wide range of EU policies and concepts in order to gain a thorough understanding of the process of European integration in both its economic and political dimensions. The Programme operates as a ‘Master after Master’, requiring students to have strong and consistent marks across a minimum of 4 years of study.

The one year 60 ECTS Advanced Master's programme has two 'specialisation streams':

European Political and Social Integration (EPSI)
Economic Integration (EI)

It offers students an education of the highest academic standards on the European unification process. The Master is designed to provide graduate students of different backgrounds with an expert knowledge on European legislation, European institutions and the economic integration process.

Furthermore, those with professional backgrounds and experience in national administrations, European institutions, etc. will find the programme challenging and rewarding. A multidisciplinary approach ensures insight from economics, law, political sciences, and sociology. A maximum of 30 students will be admitted in each of the two specialisations in order to assure high quality interactive teaching.

Then the master’s in Applied Computer Sciences is the programme you’re looking for! It is organised in such a way to accommodate your scientific background and future-oriented academic interests – developing the necessary Computer Science skills by complementing your primary field of expertise. Above all that, we offer a wide variety of highly specialised elective courses.

Approach

The first year of the programme focuses on developing knowledge of computer science concepts and techniques, with respect to the earlier studies. Lectures address both hardware and software. Elective courses in the second year allow applying the skills established in the first year, in a specialization, such as software development, telecommunications, multimedia, numeric engineering, bioinformatics, or robotics, as well as many other possibilities. Practical sessions and a master's thesis are also built into the study program.

Since Computer Science has become a diffuse area, we decided to organize this programme in a way that it can be adapted to the background and the field of interest of the student. Students start with a number of courses (depending on their background) summarizing the basic concepts in order to gain enough knowledge to be able to take elective courses and to make a master thesis in their field of interest. All this happens in an academic environment where research is done in all topics with great interaction among the researchers and large involvement of the students.

Joint organisation of two departments provides wide range of research topics
Two departments, the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science and the Department of Electronics and Informatics in the Faculty of Engineering, jointly organise the Master programmes. Together, they have more than 200 researchers who cover a wide range of research topics.

Learning outcomes

During the two master years students are able to continue to build on the broad ranging basic scientific knowledge acquired as part of their Bachelor programme, complemented with the Information Technology profile, combining a multidisciplinary engineering training with an in-depth specialisation in Applied Computer Science.

This English-speaking programme is designed for students with a solid, basic academic background in computer science (Bachelor in Computer Science). The objectives of the programme are to provide a deeper understanding and knowledge of various specializations of computer science and to prepare the student for an active role in computer science research and development. Course outline

All students study a core programme of 30 credits; do a research training of 6 credits and a master thesis of 24 credits. Students should choose one out of four specializations: Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia, Software Engineering, or Web & Information Systems. 30 credits should be spent to mandatory and optional courses within the chosen specialization. The 24 remaining optional courses can be taken within the specialization or from another specialization. Finally, 6 credits can be chosen completely freely form any of the VUB courses. Specializations offered

 Artificial Intelligence
The focus in this specialization is on building intelligent software artifacts. The theories of complex dynamic systems and self-organization are emphasized starting from the theory of complex dynamic systems as developed in related fields such as mathematics, physics, and biology. Students will be exposed to current research in the areas of adaptive systems, multi-agent systems, and the origins of language.

 Multimedia
Students in this specialization will conduct in-depth exploration of techniques for signal processing and communication of multimedia content. The program is designed to build thorough technological and scientific knowledge of various multimedia domains such as digital television, telephony and video phony, computer animation, computer games, and the Internet. Students will gain experience with complex ICT architectures for the processing, distribution, and consumption of multimedia content.

 Software Engineering
In this specialization, students gain the skills needed to build complex software applications and software intensive systems. Students are also taught scientifically sound methods, as well as the newest techniques and tools for the developing of software. The curriculum also includes research topics in programming languages and integrated development environments.

 Web & Information Systems
This specialization is geared towards information system development and application development in the context of the Web. Students will learn about data and semantic representation techniques and acquire thorough technological and scientific knowledge related to the newest technological developments for the Web. Students can participate is research in the area of ontologies, new media systems (multimedia, Virtual Reality, games, social systems), and the "Internet of Things".

The first year of courses is taught at the ULB Engineering Campus in Brussels, while the second year is taught at VUB.

The Master of Science in Architecture trains designers to realize the synergy between the engineering and the architecture disciplines.

The programme provides students with an advanced level of knowledge and insight and makes them proficient in the creative and inventive use of the engineering and architectural knowledge in a complex architectural design.

The training is characterized by the integration of scientific research in education. The design studio acts as a crystallization point in the application of knowledge with respect to architectural design, structural design, installation techniques and urban planning. Given the complex and more advanced nature of architectural design at Master level, it requires the interaction between various disciplines combined with a scientific attitude.

The programme prepares students to a wide range of job profiles such as architectural and structural engineer, project manager, consultant, employee or executive in an architectural or engineer office, supervisor of the built heritage, policy maker for urban planning, researcher and others.

The world faces a crisis risking extinction of species through global warming. Tackle complex problems in biology, medicine and health sciences

Biomedical Engineering is a branch of Engineering where students acquire knowledge and skills which can be applied to tackle complex problems in biology, medicine and health sciences. Learning outcomes

Career possibilities:
In this master's course, knowledge and skills in all fields in biomedical engineering will be given, so when you finished the Master's programme, you can be employed as generalist, and you will also be specialised in one particular field of biomedical engineering.

The programme consists of 120 credits, evenly distributed over 4 semesters of each 12 weeks. The programme also aims to develop the state of mind to perform and manage research in a multidisciplinary and international context. Therefore, our students will also be trained in different aspects of research communication and research management.

Discovery-based laboratory

The two-year programme has a strong emphasis on performing research. Its concept will require full-time attendance and will involve active participation in lectures and discovery-based laboratory work to develop the state of mind that drives the progress of science.
The program of the first year is composed of 4 modules, all of which have to be followed. The courses within each module are at advanced level and consist of 26 class hours and 6 days of practical training. The practical trainings link up with the advanced courses and will take place in the research labs under the guidance of experienced postdocs.

This part of the program includes the writing of the results of the dissertation in a publication format, seminars on intellectual property rights, scientific writing, project development and the writing of a research proposal.
The latter can be a proposal for a continuation of the topic of the Master Proof, a proposal for a PhD project, or a proposal for another research project in Biomolecular Sciences, and is intended to help the students to continue their career in biomolecular research.

The Postgraduate Training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing is offered at the UZ Brussel and Vrije Universiteit Brussel under the direction of Prof. Dr. Pedro Brugada, Head of the Heart Rhythm Management Centre at Brussels, Course Director of the Heart Rhythm Management Fellows Development Program in Europe and Asian-Pacific and Vice-Chairman of the Certification Committee on Electrophysiology of the EHRA.

This practical and theoretical postgraduate training fills the gap in education that is required for the good practice of Clinical Electrophysiology and Pacing and prepares the Fellows for a successful certification. Prof. Brugada has trained Fellows in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing for almost 30 years, helping them to obtain very important cardiology positions in centres all over the world.

Fellows are expected to be involved 100 % in the activities of the Heart rhythm Management Centre. This is a full-time engagement in Clinical and basic Cardiac electrophysiology and Pacing according to a program that will be designed individually. The minimum training period is one academic year (200 effective training days, congress participation, publications and seminars).

The first year of courses is taught at the ULB Engineering Campus in Brussels, while the second year is taught at VUB.

The Master of Chemical and Materials Engineering educates students to become innovative engineers who will contribute to their profession and to society. Engineers in chemistry and materials play a unique role in sustainable development, where they must manage resources, energy and the environment in order to develop and produce novel materials and chemical commodities. Our graduates are prepared to face the demands of the modern technological employment field and for an international career with English as their professional language.

Course content

The Master in Chemical and Material Engineering (120 ECTS) offers a solid core of courses in both of these engineering fields. The integrated and the multidisciplinary approach provides students up-to-date knowledge enabling them to propose innovative engineering solutions in numerous modern technological sectors. Students have the possibility to specialize in Process technology or Material Science.

The Master of Chemical and Materials Engineering program consists of two profiles: Process Technology and Materials.

Profile: Process Technology:
The Process Technology orientation trains students to become engineers who are employable and innovative both in production units (operation and optimization of production facilities) and in engineering groups (develop new production units that meet desired performance specifications). An emphasis is placed on the biotechnology and food industries. Students are also trained to identify, solve and avoid environmental problems including waste management, water, air and soil pollution.

Profile: Materials:
The Materials orientation prepares students for the materials and materials technology sectors (metals, polymers, ceramics and composites). Students are trained to become creative engineers capable of designing sustainable multi-functional materials which meet specific applications. Students also have the capacity to contribute to the whole life-cycle of materials from their processing into semi or full end products using environmentally friendly and safe production processes to their recycling.

- a unique interdisciplinary programme which prepares you for employment in a professional field related to chemical engineering, materials or environmental technology.

The programme is built up modularly:
1) the Common Core Chemical and Materials Engineering (56 ECTS)

Common Core Chemical and Materials Engineering:
The Common Core Chemical and Materials Engineering (56 ECTS) is spread over 2 years: 46 ECTS in the first and 10 ECTS in the second year. The Common Core emphasizes the interaction between process- and materials technology by a chemical (molecular) approach. The Common Core consists out of courses related to chemistry, process technology and materials and is the basis for the Process Technology and the Materials profiles.

Specific Courses Profile Materials:
The profile 'Materials' (30 ECTS) consists out of 2 parts, spread over the 1st and the 2nd year of the model learning track: Materials I - 14 ECTS in MA1 and Materials II - 16 ECTS in MA2. The profile adds material-technological courses to the common core.

Specific Courses Profile Process Technology:
The profile 'Process Technology' (30 ECTS) consists out of 2 parts, spread over the 1st and the 2nd year of the model learning track: Process Technology I - 14 ECTS in MA1 and Process Technology II - 16 ECTS in MA2. The profile adds process technological courses to the common core.

Elective Courses:
The elective courses are divided into 3 options:
- Option 1: Internship (10 ECTS)
- Option 2: Elective courses (incl. internship of 6 ECTS)

This MSc programme combines the expertise in the different research domains of both the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Ghent University (UGent).

About the programme

Apart from a mandatory set of core competences, the programme offers a wide variety of classes within four current trends in Chemistry (clusters composed of a course package of 30 ECTS credits):

• Molecular and Macromolecular Design offers a thorough education in the design and synthesis of organic molecules and polymers, in which medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry and structural analysis feature prominently.
• Materials Chemistry focuses on the properties of materials, such as polymers, for example surface analysis, X-rays and laser spectroscopy and computational chemistry.
• Analysis and Characterisation covers a whole range of analytical techniques, including new electrochemical methods, advanced chromatography and elemental and isotope analyses.
• Environmental Chemistry studies natural and disturbed processes in water, soil and atmosphere. A variety of analytical techniques are used here, and new sampling and measuring techniques are designed, refined and optimised.

Additionally three main orientations exist, allowing you to select a profile composed of an additional course package of 30 ECTS in Research, Industry or Education (the profile ‘Education’ is taught in Dutch).

Approach

Practicals in small groups:
Chemistry is a real experimental science. Consequently, a lot of attention is given to practical experience and laboratory training. Practical sessions are designed to precisely perform experiments in small groups, and to handle chemicals in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Writing lab reports and oral presentation skills are emphasised, as they constitute an integral part of the preparation for your future career. During these practical sessions, you are exposed to the different research areas and you become familiar with both theoretical and practical aspects of the different branches of chemistry. You will be introduced to the world of nucleic acids, proteins, biochemical processes and their applications, the design and synthesis of new molecules, molecular properties and reactivity studies, as well as the detection of organic pollutants, or the precise measurements of very low metal concentrations in the environment (water, soil, air).

Everyday applications:
Chemistry gives insight into a broad range of phenomena with everyday applications, and teaches you the theoretical basis of molecular properties. You also learn how you can elucidate the structure of complex organic molecules, and how you can build these molecules in the lab. The air you breathe or the water you drink must comply with international quality standards. You will be taught how to monitor that quality. The focus is clearly towards a discipline-based education, with a lot of time for experimental work.

It provides you with a number of skills which are important in the pursuance of disaster management:

You also learn to to teach and train disaster medical management at health professions schools and perform research in order to contribute to the further development of disaster medicine as an academic discipline. Didactic Concept

The master consists of different parts that you must complete successfully:
 A structured, self-directed study under faculty guidance on competence-based didactic activities, integrated in an e-learning curriculum and provided on the EMDM website. The educational materials are reinforced by discussion forums and complemented by electronic simulation exercises
 A two-week residential session, during which you meet the faculty and interact in debates and exercises, assessing your ability to apply an integrated knowledge base, meant for solving problems in disaster situations
 A thesis related to a topic of disaster medicine or disaster medical management, under the supervision of a local tutor and a faculty member
 A final online examination provided on the Internet, composed of an electronic simulation exercise and a multiple choice questionnaire

Teaching methods

The Master will be based on:
 self-directed study under faculty guidance based on didactic activities integrated in an e-learning curriculum, provided on the Internet (http://www.dismedmaster.com);
This will allow the student:
-to learn the core content of the program and to decide what to study in a greater detail at different levels
-to interact with the Faculty and facilitators for a better understanding of difficult points
-to collaborate with other students to learn how to deal with team-work

 a residential session during which the students meet the faculty and peers to interact in debates, practical exercises and simulation exercises, meant for solving problems in disaster situations and assessing the student’s ability to apply an integrated knowledge base. The course, held in a location fixed by the Executive Committee, is scheduled for the next edition from May 24th to June 6th, 2014;

 a final on line examination provided on the Internet composed of an electronic simulation exercise of a disaster presenting medico-organisational and medical care problems and a multiple choice questionnaire on the content of the electronic textbook.

 the writing of a dissertation or a research paper on a topic approved by the Executive Committee and under the supervision of two tutors. One tutor is proposed by the student and belongs to the student’s former or present academic or institutional environment; the second tutor is a faculty member of the EMDM.
