Using knowledge of psychology to improve daily life

With the Master’s programme Applied Cognitive Psychology, you will apply the most up-to-date knowledge of cognition to situations and solutions for problems that occur in daily life. Students will apply knowledge of human cognitive, sensory and motor systems in real-life situations.

Processing information

During this one-year programme, you will learn about processing information, especially about how you can use that information to advise clients on how to improve communications. That knowledge is useful for making signage or advertising more effective, for example, or for making products more user-friendly.

Students also learn to come up with solutions for a wide range of problems that can occur in professional practice. Humans are dramatically changing their environment using increasingly complex technology, such as the Internet, social media, robotics and automation. In order to design a living environment that is well suited to human cognitive abilities, we must have a good understanding of how humans process knowledge and their skill at applying it.

Apply psychological knowledge creatively to everyday problems

International orientation

This Master’s programme is internationally oriented, from the literature used in class to the opportunity to do an internship and write a thesis abroad, and from the option of attending electives at foreign universities to participating in international summer schools, research conferences or workshops.

Learn to work in multidisciplinary teams

Both our lecturers and our students have very diverse backgrounds. During the study programme, you will spend a lot of time learning to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Accurate and careful communication is vital to that process.

Humans are dramatically changing their environment using increasingly complex technology

Applied Musicology focuses on the musical infrastructure and offers the specific knowledge and skills required for a musicologist to operate successfully within international musical practice.

The programme is a reflective training in both current and innovative approaches in musicology, whereas at the same time academic musicological skills are 'translated' into the day-to-day challenges in a musical life.

The programme is designed in a direct dialogue with top of the bill institutions within the musical infrastructure in the Netherlands and beyond; it does not discriminate between classical and popular music. The curriculum augments the knowledge and skills gained through the Utrecht Bachelor programme in Musicology, with its accents on both historical musicology and the relation of music with other media.

Students are accompanied intensively while developing research and reflective skills relevant to questions in contemporary music production, programming, financing and participation. Required skills (for example journalistic writing skills) are trained extensively in classroom labs, coached by professors and professionals.

Biofabrication

Creating functional tissue models with 3D printing technologies: Biofabrication combines advanced fabrication techniques with biological systems to prepare designed tissue constructs.

Tissue constructs can be applied for tissue engineering, as 3D in vitro biologic models or as medical therapeutic products.
Biofabrication is a truly multidisciplinary area of research. It requires an understanding of chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, robotics and computer science. In this respect, few researchers entering the biofabrication field have been trained in such a diverse range of subjects.

Students enrolled in the Biofabrication programme at Utrecht University will complete their coursework required for the degree in Utrecht at Utrecht University / UMC Utrecht, as well as a research project that fills the first year. A total of 60 EC including a research project will be undertaken in Australia in the second year, at either Queensland University of Technology or University of Wollongong. Both institutions have a strong reputation in the field of Biofabrication and are in the forefront of 3D printing with biomaterials. A European Union-subsidised mobility programme will financially support these overseas secondments

*Please note that it is our intention to transform this programme into a new programme Biology of Cardiovascular Disease from September 2017 onwards. The option to focus on areas other than cardiovascular disease then will be limited.*

The Master's in Biology of Disease focuses on the translation of disease into a scientifically secure experiment/model, in order to study its underlying mechanisms and reveal potential therapies.

The Master's programme in Biology of Disease offers the opportunity to study disease mechanisms in the broadest sense via internships in pre-clinical and clinical research in medical, biomedical, biological, industrial and veterinary labs; and to focus on more than one clinical specialty enabling you to conduct research projects on different subjects and diseases. Alternatively this programme offers the possibility to focus on cardiovascular research.

This two year research programme comprises theoretical courses, elective courses, seminars, a major and minor research project, and the writing of a Master's thesis. The core component of this two year research programme consists of independently planning and conducting the two research projects, which will take 15 months in total. The minor research project may be completed elsewhere in the Netherlands or abroad; or it may be replaced by a specific profile: Management, Teaching and Communication or Drug Regulatory Sciences. Graduates of this programme are prepared for PhD studies (approximately 65% choose for this option); or to take on a position in the medical-technical or pharmaceutical industry, or in science journalism.

The Master's in Cancer, Stem Cells and Developmental Biology guides you in exploring the mysteries of embryonic growth, stem cells, evolution and development in relation to health and disease.

This Master's programme combines research in the fields of oncology, molecular developmental biology and genetics in animals and humans. During the major (9 months) and minor (6 months) research projects on topics of your own choice, you learn sophisticated modern techniques of genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. It is possible to complete the minor research project in a laboratory of your choice abroad. During the two year research programme, you are required to take 10 weeks of theoretical courses in the areas grouped in five broad subject areas. You may choose your favourite courses from the list of courses organized by our programme, as well as by other programmes and institutes. Moreover, you are required to attend seminars that present research covering the full range of topics related to biomedical and life sciences.

A final Master's thesis, based on literature research on a relevant topic, completes your programme. It should present a clear overview of recent literature on the topic of interest and demonstrate your ability to critically evaluate hypotheses and results, present your own views and draw conclusions that may lead to the formulation of new research goals.
