As well as advanced study of accounting and finance, MSc Accounting and Finance will enable you to explore related areas such as audit, corporate governance and taxation. This combination will prepare you for a wide range of roles in accountancy and beyond.

Introducing your degree

MSc Accounting and Finance is one of Southampton Business School's most popular degrees. It offers a blend of modules that will deepen your knowledge of finance and accounting but also enable you to explore related areas such as international corporate governance, audit and corporate social responsibility.

Unlike many other accounting and finance masters courses, MSc Accounting and Finance also includes a module on international taxation, adding an extra dimension to your studies. This combination will open the door to a wide range of roles when you graduate – you may choose to go into accounting but you’ll have plenty of other career options too.

Our modules are directly informed by our academics’ research expertise and professional experience, and guest speakers from leading accounting, insurance and finance firms will further enrich your learning.

Overview

In semester one you’ll take a number of compulsory modules, covering equity markets, management accounting and financial accounting. You’ll also choose one optional module that will allow you to look at an area of interest in more depth.

Unusually for a masters course of this type, the options include an International Accounting and Taxation module. This explores the importance of a country’s social, economic, legal and political environment in determining the nature of its tax regulations, the challenges of harmonising accounting practices, and the impact of tax issues on company behaviours. Other options cover topics such as financial reporting and markets, accounting and society and international corporate governance.

In semester two you’ll take your management accounting and financial accounting studies to a more advanced level. You’ll also study corporate finance and take a module on research in accounting and finance. This will prepare you to undertake independent study for your dissertation.

Career Opportunities

You’ll graduate from MSc Accounting and Finance with skills and knowledge that will be attractive to a wide range of employers. You may choose to work in accounting, audit, internal control, financial analysis, consultancy or insurance, or become a financial advisor or financial analyst. Or you could become a trainee chartered accountant and take further professional accounting qualifications. The course is also excellent preparation for research at PhD level in an accounting, finance or a related field.

Our graduates have gone on to work for the following organisations, in roles including auditor, trainee chartered accountant, financial analyst, management consultant, insurance underwriter and financial controller:

  • BDO Stoy Hayward
  • KPMG
  • Mars Chocolate
  • NHS
  • Commerzbank
  • Zurich

With its distinctive combination of subject areas, this accounting and management degree will equip you with a breadth of skills and knowledge to help you further your career in a wide range of sectors.

Introducing your degree

Offering a blend of subjects not found in many UK masters degrees, MSc Accounting and Management bridges the gap between general management and specialist accounting courses.

This accounting and management degree is open to students from a range of academic or professional backgrounds – no prior study in accounting is required.

Taught by research-active academics, you’ll gain a solid foundation in management and accounting concepts, as well as valuable technical and transferable skills. You’ll graduate with a wide choice of career options – you could decide to continue your accountancy training by taking professional qualifications, work in a bank or financial institution, or apply your skills in a management role in other sectors of business or industry.

Overview

While many of our students join MSc Accounting and Management straight after their undergraduate degree, a proportion have been working for some years and are looking to progress within their chosen sector or explore possible new career options.

Career Opportunities

Typical career destinations for our graduates include banks, financial institutions and accounting or consultancy firms. Their career path may also depend on their professional or academic background – those from an engineering background, for example, may use their management and accounting knowledge to progress to higher-level management roles within engineering.

You may choose to continue your accountancy studies by taking further professional qualifications; on graduation you may be able to apply for accounting qualification exemptions.

There is increasing pressure to make life quieter and to gain a better understanding of how noise and vibration affect people. Our MSc in Acoustical Engineering is a full-time masters degree that offers an academically challenging exposure to modern developments in sound, vibration and signal processing.

Introducing your degree

Acoustical engineers are in great demand in almost every field of engineering. Whether they’re creating better-sounding concert halls, superior sound reproduction systems, clearer ultrasound scans or quieter aeroplanes, acoustical engineers combine solid understanding of engineering fundamentals with specialist knowledge of sound and vibration to make the world sound better. A unique degree course for those with a passion for sound.

Overview

Learning and teaching

The programme is split into two components: a 'taught' component (October to June) and a research component (February to September). The courses are taught at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), which is a world-leading centre for acoustical engineering.

Taught Modules

The 'taught' component will consist of a range of modules based on lectures, hands-on demonstrations, laboratory teaching and exercises in small groups.

You are encouraged throughout to contribute your own professional experiences and thoughts to the learning of the whole class through a free exchange of ideas.

Research Project

The research project is the climax of the MSc programme. The project offers an opportunity to perform advanced research supervised by a member of academic staff. A list of projects offered by members of teaching staff is posted during Semester 1. You may also propose your own project.

Work begins on the project in February with the Project Development module. The research itself is mostly carried out during the summer period. A planning and literature review report is submitted at an early stage in the project, and an interview/presentation with the internal examiner is held at around the mid-point. On completion a dissertation is produced. This has to be completed and submitted before the start of the new academic year.

Assessment

Testing of the knowledge base is through a combination of unseen written examinations and assessed coursework in the form of problem solving exercises, laboratory reports, design exercises, essays, and individual and group projects.

Analysis and problem solving skills are assessed through unseen written examinations and problem based exercises. Experimental, research and design skills are assessed through laboratory reports, coursework exercises, project reports and oral presentations.

As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. As a result, this programme may be revised during a student’s period of registration; however, any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Please read our Disclaimer to see why, when and how changes may be made to a student’s programme.

Programmes and major changes to programmes are approved through the University’s programme validation process which is described in the University’s quality handbook.
