About the course

The MSc Advanced Computer Science course consists of two major parts: taught modules and an MSc project. Each taught module has an assigned number of credits (either 15 or 30). About the course

Full-time Pathway (overseas students)
The full-time pathway is for overseas pharmacists and starts in September, lasting for 12 months. There are 7 compulsory modules across the year, which are all taught. In addition you will have some work placements at a local hospital to allow you to put into practice what you have been taught. The year finishes with the production of a dissertation on a pharmacy related subject in the Project module.

Part-time Pathway (for UK registered pharmacists)
The part-time pathway is for UK registered pharmacist intending to top up their CPD or gain a qualification. It can be taken over 5 years if necessary, and starts at the beginning of each semester (depending on module availability). Please see the programme specification to what modules are available to practicing UK pharmacists. We are also able to take a limited number of credits from other health-related modules available at our University. This includes the Independent Prescribing course which is charged at a premium rate.

Individual optional modules may also be undertaken as free standing modules and short courses. UK pharmacists with an existing UK postgraduate diploma or certificate obtained within the last 5 years will be able to carry forward all or part of these qualifications towards the award of an MSc. This will be decided on a case by case basis but typically a pharmacist with a postgraduate diploma in pharmacy practice/clinical pharmacy may be able to take forward 90 credits. An award of MSc requires the accumulation of 180 credits (including a 60 credit research element).

Work Placement

All our one year full time Computer Science Masters programmes are available with an optional one year industry placement. The 'with placement' programmes give you additional industrial experience by applying the skills you have learned throughout your studies.

They offer you the opportunity to work for one year in a highly professional and stimulating environment. You will be a full time employee in a company earning a salary and will learn new skills that can't be taught at University. During the placement, you will be able to gain further insight into industrial practice that you can take forward into your individual project.

We will provide excellent academic and personal support during both your academic and placement periods together with comprehensive careers guidance from our very experienced dedicated Careers and Placements Service.

Although the responsibility for finding a placement is with you, our Careers and Placements Service maintains a wide variety of employers who offer placement opportunities and organise special training sessions to help you secure a placement, from job application to the interview. Optional one-to-one consultations are also available.

In order to qualify for the placement period you must maintain an overall average pass mark of not less than 60% across all modules studied in semester ‘A’.

This programme will give you hands-on practical experience of both laboratory and bioinformatics techniques. You will also be trained in biotechnology research strategies. A strong practical foundation is provided in the first semester (Semester A) when you study two modules: 'Cellular Molecular Biology' and 'Core Genetics and Protein Biology'. These modules concentrate on the basic principles and the techniques used in modern molecular biology investigations, and on aspects of cellular molecular biology and development.

The second semester (Semester B) has a problem-based learning approach to the application of the knowledge you gained in Semester A. You will study two modules: 'Industrial Biotechnology' and 'Molecular Biotechnology'. These modules will give you an in depth understanding of the application of molecular biological approaches to the production of industrial and medicinal proteins. You will also learn how to apply and design industrial and environmental biotechnology processes, such as process kinetics and design, reactor design and oxygen transfer, sterilization kinetics and the application of biotechnology processes for the bioremediation of contaminated sites.

In the third semester (Semester C) you undertake a research project to develop your expertise further. The research project falls into different areas and may include aspects of fermentation biotechnology, genetic manipulation and protein engineering, bioinformatics, microbial physiology and environmental biotechnology.
