Course structure

Our flexible Master's programme will give you a strong grounding in core disciplines of accounting and finance. This masters aims to provide the theoretical frameworks and practical skills to become an effective accountant. 

You will learn how accounting and financial information is used for decision making and how it integrates with the wider business environment. Throughout your studies you will follow a highly international curriculum which will be relevant to both home and international students.

The technical aspects of our Master's have been aligned to meet requirements of the accountancy profession. This includes International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) developed by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). You will develop your practical skills by analysing real data sets in software platforms.

You will be encouraged to develop critical and evaluative thinking and judgement through exposure to contemporary issues in the field of accounting and finance.

You also have the opportunity to pursue your chosen areas of specialism through option courses and a dissertation. Our teaching is supported by current research and hands-on financial problems.

The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) is a specialised multidisciplinary research organisation within the University of Greenwich. The Institute received the Queen's Anniversary Prize for its research activities on food security in the developing world. Much of NRI's research work is concerned with natural resources, agriculture and social development in developing countries, although it has an expanding portfolio of activities in Europe and other industrialised countries.

NRI provides a thriving environment for MPhil and PhD students working in agricultural and food sciences. Each of NRI's departments has a strong portfolio of research activities, of which students form an important and integral part.

The Agriculture, Health & Environment Department works on the worldwide development of appropriate cost-effective and sustainable approaches to controlling pests, diseases and weeds that affect crop production. Use of biocontrol and control methods involving no (or very low) conventional pesticides are increasing in importance in our work, especially for export crops.

The Department also has researchers who share a common interest in the many species of insects, ticks and rodents that cause injury to their hosts and transmit diseases to both humans and animals. Research is undertaken in the UK, using NRI's state-of-the-art laboratories, insectaries and glasshouses, and also overseas. Particularly strong areas of research include the epidemiology of insect-borne virus diseases, molecular diagnostics, pest and disease modelling, aerobiology and biometeorology, migrant pests, medical and veterinary entomology and integrated pest management.

The Food and Markets Department works on commodity management and food safety of cereals, grains, root crops, perishables and other crops. The Department works with all aspects of the operations of the food industry, including, for example, storage, post-harvest technology, quality analysis and management, compliance with food standards, food processing and value addition, value chains, private and public sector standards and market development. NRI's work provides many opportunities for postgraduates to be involved in multidisciplinary projects.

This programme is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in agriculture and sustainable development in the private sector, research, NGO or government communities. It provides a firm grounding in research methods applicable to the study of sustainable agriculture and the intellectual tools for understanding sustainable agriculture systems. The courses combine theoretical approaches and empirically based learning from case studies of real projects and agricultural scenarios.

Teaching will focus on case studies from NRI's corporate experience of looking at how research into agricultural issues, both in the natural and social sciences, can be translated into knowledge and products that have real impact on increasing the effectiveness of agriculture in delivering food security and enhancing livelihoods for all stakeholders. Life and plant science undergraduates, and professionals in commercial horticulture and agriculture looking to develop their career, from the UK and overseas, will benefit from a broad, research-led syllabus. Taught content will equip the graduate with the expertise needed to work independently in a range of areas of current commercial plant science, at supervisory or management level, or in applied research. As well as ensuring a thorough grounding in basic science and horticultural technology, the modern molecular biology content is particularly relevant, since new technologies are rapidly entering the commercial arena. The independent research project will be set in a research institution or appropriate local industry, and will be designed around the student's interests and expertise.

The MSc focuses on methods used in the evaluation and improvement of conventional crops that feed the growing world population, but also alternative protected crops and ornamentals along with postharvest management, business and environmental concerns, and plant stress and disease in a changing climate.

There are two main research groups in the Department, The Sustainable Built Environment Research Group (SBERG) which includes Sustainable Landscapes and AVATAR (Advanced Virtual and Technological Architectural Research) which also includes research in graphic and digital design. Typically, students initially register for the MPhil. After approximately 12 to 18 months, students submit a comprehensive transfer report in order to be considered for transfer to PhD. If the transfer report and viva are accepted, the student is permitted to continue to completion of the PhD.

MPhil/PhD opportunities are available across the range of activities within the Department but generally students should select topics in areas covered by the research areas.

The MArch Architecture programme is for graduates of architecture with ARB/RIBA Part 1 who wish to gain exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 2. Our aim is to prepare students for the complexities of contemporary architectural practice by providing a rich mix of rigorous academic and professional teaching.

All students choose a design unit within which to undertake their project work, each unit has a different specialism across the themes of; digital surrealism, film and animation, bio-technology, art practice and contemporary culture. The units are led by a highly experienced team of internationally recognised design tutors.

The first year of the programme starts by developing advanced skills in urban design and digital representation that can be applied to a major building project in conjunction with a professionally mentored 'Design Realisation' technical report. Additionally students are exposed to current theoretical trends that form the basis for ambitious speculations on contemporary architecture.

The second year of study takes the aspirations of the students work to a higher level of professional and academic engagement with an integrated advanced architectural design project and a specialist theoretical and, or, technological thesis developed with respect to the students own interests and passions.

The part-time mode is intended for students working in a supportive architectural practice and requires attendance two days a week over three years.

The Assessment Only route to QTS is a means to formal qualification for experienced but unqualified teachers on the basis of their significant experience in schools. At the University of Greenwich we currently offer this programme for experienced teachers of Science, Maths, Modern Languages, PE, Dance and Music in secondary schools. We consider applications from teachers who are already employed and established in schools in London and the South East. For this programme relevant teaching experience involves being responsible for planning, teaching and assessment of classes of, typically, 20 pupils or more.

It is important to stress that the AO route does not include any training element and therefore is not a substitute for more extensive initial teacher training routes such as PGCE and School Direct. Successful applicants are putting themselves forward to be assessed against the Teachers' Standards on the basis of experience supported by appropriate evidence.

The Award of Institutional Credit in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (HE) is an applied, practice-based programme supporting professional development in higher education and offering a first step towards a higher education teaching qualification. The programme provides an introduction to teaching, learning and assessment in higher education for those with relatively little teaching but for whom a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education is not appropriate; fractional or part-time staff; those with teaching support or assistant roles. The programme's two courses provide solid grounding in the practice of teaching and reflection in higher education. Using a reflective and experiential approach, participants evaluate their own professional practice, relating this reflection to educational theory and scholarship to develop pedagogical understanding and innovative responses to the challenges of teaching in higher education. One of the two courses is studied with PG Certificate in Higher Education participants.

The 'Learning, teaching and assessing in higher education' course includes planning and facilitating learning, assessing, and giving feedback. 'Foundations of professional development in HE' includes development of a portfolio of evidence meeting expectations of the UK Professional Standards Framework, including teaching practice assessments.

The programme is online blended, using a variety of web 2.0 tools to provide socially interactive experience through learning activities including group-work and webinars, with 2 face-to-face Study Days (Saturdays) and teaching observations. Degree aims

Course structure

You will learn to conceptualise, design and realise a project for the generation of new knowledge. Our degree will give you deep understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry. 

Unlike taught programmes (such as Bachelor's and Master's programmes), this degree provides a more critical and rigorous exploration of your particular subject area. It places much more emphasis on original research and the contribution to knowledge. 

You will attend taught courses in your first and second year to lay the foundation from which you will develop advanced research skills including the gathering, analysis and presentation of quantitative and qualitative data.

Supervisors

At the heart of this MPhil/PhD is the collaboration between you and your research supervisor. Our supervisors, your first point of contact in the faculty, are experts in your chosen area and will guide you through the process of: 

  • Defining the aims of your research project, and its expected deliverables
  • Outlining a suitable plan of work, monitoring its realisation, and helping you to keep your commitment to it
  • Guiding you to obtaining ethical approval to realise your research, if your study requires it

Research

You are encouraged to contact us to discuss your research interests and you will graduate with a degree title that reflects your area of specialism. Your award will be based on the completion of a thesis.

We have expertise and can supervise research students primarily in the areas of human resource management, organisational behaviour, accounting and finance, financial services, critical and social research in accounting, public administration, public policy, political economy, applied economics, social and economic network analysis, international business, strategic management, supply chain management, knowledge management, IT strategies, entrepreneurship and innovation, marketing, tourism, and cultural, art and heritage industries.

Attendance

The normal route accepted by the University is to register first as MPhil student, and transfer to PhD after demonstrating sufficient progress in your research (usually after about 12-18 months from start). 

Attendance for MPhil is 18-36 months full-time and 30-48 months part-time; PhD is 36-60 months full-time and 48-72 months part-time.

Each student normally first enrols on the MPhil degree. After completing the first year of the MPhil, the student's progress is reviewed, and, if considered satisfactory, the student is permitted to transfer to the PhD for a further two to three years of research. A student who does not wish to continue at this point may write up and submit the work to be considered for an MPhil degree.

MPhil/PhD students are usually provided with two supervisors, who guide them through the research. The supervisors are usually research staff from within the Department, although a supervisor may be appointed from another Department or from outside the university. The Department has a number of research groups focusing on practical and important real-life problems.

It also gives students understanding and skills in the methodology of research and the experience of a critical investigation of an approved topic at a high level.

Taught courses are chosen from the School's broad portfolio and should be appropriate to the student's project area. The student must undertake a research methodology course as the basis for the project. The project itself is one of the student's free choices, within the constraints imposed by his or her education, training and experience. The career paths that our graduates can look forward to include arts and cultural management, design management, curatorship (museum, gallery, festival), creative direction, education advisory, cultural publishing, policy making, and art/design criticism. Alternatively, the programme can inspire graduates to open their own cultural start-ups or work for international consultancy firms.

Graduates of the programme can also develop academic profiles and research interests to go into teaching or advanced study at MPhil and PhD level.

How are we taught?

Typically, in full-time mode, you can expect 10 hours attendance per week over two days in a class of around 15-20 students. Teaching is a mixture of studio work, seminars, lectures and workshops. The full-time mode should only be considered by students who are able to dedicate at least 25 hours per week to the programme. The part-time mode is recommended for students in full-time employment.

Overseas applications for this course should be received no later than the end of July for entry in September to allow the sufficient time for visa applications.
