The TESOL program offers the Master of Science in Education (MSEd) and the Master of Arts (MA) degrees. The MA enables graduates to teach in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs on college campuses or in other English programs across the globe. This track is also suitable for international students who wish to be involved in English education around the world, such as ESL programs in higher education or other intensive English programs. The MSEd is designed for those who are already certified looking to teach English Language Learners (ELL) in K-12 settings.

Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA) offers a Master of Science in Educational Studies degree for individuals interested in the general study of education who are not seeking certification to teach. This program is suited for several types of students.

The program is ideal for professionals working in schools in non-teaching positions and for professionals working in with students or schools through human service agencies or other settings who would benefit from a greater understanding of educational foundations, as well as for teachers and educators from outside the U.S. who desire graduate study in the field of education.

The program also serves teachers interested in obtaining a master’s degree in education but who work in a subject area OTHER than the certification areas offered by Binghamton University (childhood and early childhood education, special education, literacy education, or adolescence education in English, romance languages, mathematics, sciences or social studies).

Professional Development

The program consists of 36 credits, and students must take at least 4 credits in each of the following educational areas: foundations of education, teaching and learning, and research. Students will work closely with a faculty advisor to select suitable courses from the diverse curriculum and develop an individualized course of study. The program culminates in a research-based master’s paper or project. This involves a formal research paper on a major educational issue or a research report of a field-based study. If the student is teaching, the final project could involve presenting a reflective portfolio and curricular materials, including a review of relevant research.

After You Graduate

The study of anthropology draws freely on various fields of study in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, and its diversity today is such that no single central mission earns a wide consensus.
To this end, the department of anthropology at Binghamton University offers students training in the four traditional subfields of archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and social/cultural anthropology, while encouraging students to specialize along tracks that cross these sub-disciplinary boundaries.
Recent doctoral graduates are employed in positions at the New York State Department of Health, the National Geographic Society, Museum of International Folk Art, Purdue University, and the University of Tennessee.

Anthropology seeks to understand the nature and origins of human biological variability, cultural diversity and social formations through systematic exploration, scientific examination and the application of theory to human populations and their artifacts, including their social configurations, past and present.
Although anthropology has historically been most successful in the analysis of small sociocultural systems, its current challenge is to situate the direct objects of study in their global contexts in both space and time. The discipline draws freely on various fields of study in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, and its diversity today is such that no single central mission earns a wide consensus.

The interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Applied Liberal Studies (MAALS) program meets the needs of liberal arts and sciences graduates by providing an effective bridge between rich backgrounds in the sciences, social sciences, fine arts and humanities and the challenging world of professional employment. Through coursework, internships and a capstone experience, students work with faculty from a variety of fields as they build the advanced communication, research and leadership skills sought by employers in the private, public and non-profit sectors. The program facilitates the development of the cultural competency, financial literacy, and information technology knowledge students need to navigate today's complex economies.

Professional Development

Students complete two internships, one in the greater Binghamton community and one in another region of the state, country or world. Students work with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development to identify interests, explore opportunities and secure internship placements. With a long-standing commitment to theory and a progressive understanding of the discipline, the Comparative Literature Department has also embarked on a new effort to define the specific contributions of the humanities to the pressing socio-political and ethical concerns of the contemporary world. It actively embraces new directions for trans-disciplinary research and attempts to determine how such research can help to draw forth and carry forward the fundamental questions that concern the humanities. A strong engagement with the question of literary language and with contemporary work in the arts anchors this effort to rethink the place of the humanities and literary study while respecting the special temporalities and forms of encounter that characterize these domains.

The Department of Comparative Literature at Binghamton University offers three avenues of graduate study with MA and PhD options. The Department of Economics seeks applicants prepared to develop the requisite skills to perform rigorous research, regardless of undergraduate major. The graduate program offers specializations in economic history and economics evolution, econometrics, environmental economics, labor economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, public economics and urban economics under the supervision of nationally recognized scholars on its faculty.

The program has recently been ranked 10th and 19th amongst all PhD-granting institutions in the United States in the fields of agricultural and natural resource economics, and economic history, respectively. The Department of English, General Literature and Rhetoric offers students the opportunity to study literature and language in their many manifestations. Although English and American literature and the practice of creative and expository writing are primary, the department conceives of neither literature nor writing in a narrow or parochial way. Literature courses deal broadly with genres and themes from the past and present, and teach students how to read and analyze texts; creative writing courses foster, in qualified students, the development of serious creativity; rhetoric courses deal with both the theory and practice of communication, as well as the history of oral and written argument.

The Master of Arts in French, Italian and Spanish follow a 9 course requirement in two plans. Prospective graduate students are encouraged to seek academic advise early in their planning to ensure sequences that best reflect expectations and future career choices and interests.
The Romance Languages and Literatures Department provides instruction in the French, Italian and Spanish languages and their literatures with the programs leading to the master of arts degree. A candidate for the MA is expected to acquire oral and written proficiency in one Romance language, sound knowledge of the principal aspects of the literature in that language; and familiarity with various methods of scholarship and criticism. An elementary knowledge of a second Romance language and of Latin is desirable.
The master of arts degree in each of the three languages follows a similar structure: nine (9) graduate courses (36 credits). Two of the nine are considered electives, selected with the student's adviser or department graduate director and tailored to the student's needs and future objectives, in closely related subject matter within the general framework of the Master's program. Of the remaining seven courses, the student is immersed in the literature and canon of the language being studied. A parallel program is available whereby one course substitution of a Thesis may be selected. All students are required to take Comprehensive Examinations. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) aptitude test scores are required for admission. The requirements for the MA in French, Italian or Spanish may be satisfied according to Plan A or Plan B described below.

The Romance Languages and Literatures Department provides instruction in French language and literature leading to the master of arts degree. Students have the option of pursuing a track of study culminating in a master's thesis or may pursue a track of study whereby one course may be selected in substitution of the thesis.

The program at Binghamton University allows students to work closely with the accomplished members of our faculty throughout their academic careers, and also affords students the opportunity to participate in a joint MA/PhD program offered in collaboration with the Comparative Literature Department. The flexible programs and options for work done outside the department make Binghamton University a unique educational institution.
