The MA in Art History and Curating offers a theoretical and critical approach to the study of art history and curatorial practice. Focusing mainly on the modern period (19th and 20th centuries), the programme will address key developments in art and art history up to the present day. For students who do not wish to undertake a full MA, a Postgraduate Certificate is also available.

The programme would appeal to graduates who have studied Fine Art, Art History or any other Arts and Humanities discipline, or those from non arts backgrounds wishing to pursue a new subject. It will also appeal to those already working in the museums or galleries sector wishing to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD). There are opportunities to participate in overseas study tours and in recent years the department has visited Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Milan, Paris, Florence, Venice and New York. London visits and regional exhibition visits may also take place, depending on the exhibition programme for the year. The Arts play a significant and growing role in wealth creation and the regeneration of urban and rural environments. Visiting galleries and museums has never been more popular. The numbers of Art Education and heritage sites are expanding and all look to recruit postgraduates with a background in the Arts and Art History.

Study Details / Module Information

At the outset you will be introduced to the Art History and Curating programme through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials, delivered by specialist academic staff. Your tutors will provide you with a firm foundation and knowledge of visual cultures and applied arts primarily in Europe and the U.S. enabling you to understand your own learning and study needs within the context of the subject. A contextual journal is introduced that will underpin your academic studies facilitating a personal and individual perspective.

You will continue to develop your theoretical skills through continuous tutorial consultation and supervision enabling you to devise your own work programme from the range of courses on offer. Teaching is by lectures, seminars, tutorials and gallery visits to enable the first hand study of artworks; their context and curation. We expect a critical approach towards writing with an awareness of contemporary art practice and the historical socio-political and cultural forces that inform it. Your programme of study will be agreed with your subject tutors, and will make full use of the museums and galleries on Merseyside and beyond.

This programme is addressed primarily to those either already involved in pastoral work, including leadership positions in Christian churches and organisations, or those interested in finding future employment in this area. It is unique in that it not only offers students an opportunity to gain a thorough and systematic training in methods and approaches in Pastoral Theology, but it also familiarises them with the academic discipline of Biblical Studies, including a focused and research based study of specific biblical texts as well as a broader perspective on themes in biblical theology.

Students are expected to develop a more mature and critical approach, based on sound knowledge and scholarship, and in full awareness of the complexity and hermeneutical issues involved. At the same time, all the Biblical Studies modules include theological and pastoral perspectives. In this way students learn to understand the texts of the Old and New Testament in their historical and socio-cultural setting, are introduced to methods and approaches used in the academic study of the Bible, the tools used by biblical scholars, and the most important developments in the field of biblical scholarship, but they also gain insight into their theological significance and are better prepared to appreciate the use of the Bible in pastoral and liturgical settings.

· Algorithms (compulsory - 15 credits): This course gives a firm grounding in the philosophy and evolution of algorithmic design and analysis for computer science, engineering and information systems.

· Innovations in Computer Science (compulsory - 15 credits): You will examine the particular research interests of Computer Science Department.

· Research Methods for Computer Science (compulsory - 15 credits): The course will expose you to the established techniques of research and enquiry that are used to extend, create and interpret knowledge in computer science

· Embedded Systems and Robotics (elective - 15 credits): This course will examine the Robotics Operating System and robotic programming languages, such as Urbi.

· Cloud Computing and Web Services (elective - 15 credits): You will study the concepts behind the idea of cloud computing and web services and gain practical knowledge of Azure, the .Net framework and C#.

· Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing (elective - 15 credits): You will examine mobile phone OSs (Android) and Windows Phone 7. You will learn how to develop software for these devices using JavaFX and C#/Silverlight.

· Human Computer Interaction (elective - 15 credits): Human computer interaction (HCI) is the study of interaction between people and computers and is the most multi-disciplinary module available in the MSc Computer Science.

The MA by Creative Practice is designed for professional practitioners, recent graduates and professionals who wish to update and re-establish their own personal development. The MA is based on an individually negotiated programme of practice and research rather than a pre-arranged programme of teaching. There is a strong emphasis on supervised independent learning, personal responsibility, reflection and evaluation. It is a practical course for the practical student.

Study Details / Module Information

The programme consists of four taught modules, one of which is formally timetabled and the others taught through tutorial contact. You must complete 180 credits to graduate with the MA and each module will be assessed. Assessment methods will vary and may include written papers, practical outcomes such as exhibitions, performances and presentations, market research and other aspects of professional creative practice.

- Theoretical Research and Professional Practice (30 credits)
- Negotiated Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Autonomous Creative Practice (30 credits)
- Creative Practice Final Project (90 credits)

Assessment for Theoretical Research and Professional Practice takes the form of three 3000 word written assignments, other modules are assessed on practical outcomes, supporting contextual work, marketing strategies etc. Negotiated Creative Practice and the Creative Practice Final also include a viva voce.

All staff teaching on the MA by Creative Practice are professional practitioners in their respective disciplines and research interests reflect this. Recent publications include chapters in books such as Introduction to John Godber Plays 3 (London: Methuen, 2003); conference papers such as Interventionist Theatre: Theatre in Conflict Resolution (University of Leeds, Bretton Hall, 2004); Living Place Project and its Impact on Regeneration and The Application of CAD/CAM in the Production of Abstract Sculptural Form, presented at the 2005 International Design Conference, Yunlin University, Taiwan. Staff also have works in a wide range of public and private collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and exhibit at exhibitions including Collect at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Music compositions by members of staff have been performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Members of Fine Art and Design staff held a group exhibition Staff and Alumni ’08 as part of the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, as well as having solo shows in Liverpool and beyond and taking part in international sculpture workshops. Throughout the year, Visiting Professors Joanna MacGregor and John Godber contribute to events within the Deanery, including the annual Cornerstone Festival.

The number of patients with diabetes, in particular, Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), has been steadily increasing with over 382 million patients of which over 95% are Type 2 whilst diabetes Type 1 accounts for around 5%. It is estimated that this number will rise to more than 560 million by year 2030, i.e. an increase of 147%, with the largest increase in prevalence in developing countries. Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of global mortality by disease.

Over the past three years, the Faculty of Science has had extensive consultations with a significant number of primary and secondary care physicians, diabetes specialist nurse practitioners and pharmaceutical industry to develop comprehensive post-graduate programme on diabetes. During the consultation, we identified the need at local, national and international level for the up-to-date training in diabetes management. Based on this, we have developed a focussed programme of study which will provide opportunity to potential candidates to gain up-to-date scientific, medical and clinical knowledge on management of diabetes. Moreover, the course is designed to improve clinical skills required for effective management of diabetes, ultimately aimed at improving patient outcome.

We aim to provide students with:

A rich, dynamic and multidisciplinary learning environment of diabetes education for health care providers with various professional capacities/responsibilities within UK healthcare system;
Evidence-based knowledge in and clinical exposure (case relevant role plays) to diabetes care;

Disability Studies is a relatively new but rapidly growing academic discipline, as illustrated by the international proliferation of courses, events, networks, journals, book series, monographs, edited collections, and so on. Though drawing on this progress substantially, the Disability Studies MA differs from similar programmes insofar as it places particular emphasis on cultural issues. We are not only interested in the policies, prejudices, and professions around disability but also its representation in literature, media, film, art and so on. Liverpool Hope University is particularly well suited as a host for this programme on many counts. Most obviously, and indeed most importantly, we have a wealth of specialist staff and resources. We have a number of experts in Disability Studies, award winning tutors, and internationally recognised scholars and researchers. In this role, you will be a graduate leader responsible for organising and leading high-quality teaching practice in early years settings. You will make a lasting, positive difference to children's wellbeing, learning and development.

The PGCE Early Years course lasts 38 weeks, of which you will spend approximately 20 weeks gaining practical experience in Early Years education. Experience is divided into periods of serial attachment (one or more days per week). During these periods you will work in early years settings with the guidance of trained mentors. School and University-based elements of the course are interlinked.

Modules are designed to reflect staff research and professional expertise, and advance student’s professional and academic development. Students are supported to become accomplished independent researchers. On graduation they are expected to be highly employable in the area of ecology and environmental management.

The University is seeking professional accreditation for the MSc Ecology and Environmental Management, and hopes to achieve this before the end of academic year 2015/16.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management hosts not only the MSc Ecology and Environmental Management, but also the internationally renowned ‘Sand Dune and Shingle Network’. The aim of the Network is to conserve these threatened habitats as dynamic landscapes. The Network supports field trips, research projects and placements for students on the MSc. Curriculum

Principles and theories of ecology and environmental management (20 credits) - This module outlines and critically reviews the principles and theories of ecology and environmental management, including sustainability, and examines decision-making tools in environmental management including environmental assessment. Key concepts important for subsequent modules will be addressed. A field-based case study approach is used to investigate theories and principles in practice.

Research methods for ecology and environmental Management (20 credits) - This module provides students with the skills required to plan, undertake and communicate a Masters research project. The transferable skills covered include, for example: experimental design and analysis, GIS, academic writing, oral presentation skills and project management.

Biodiversity conservation (20 credits) - This module provides students with an in depth and critical understanding of the importance and urgency of biodiversity conservation. Using fieldwork and desk-top studies, students will develop a conservation site management plan for the benefit of biodiversity.

Coastal ecology, change and management (20 credits) - This module develops student’s critical understanding of one of the world’s most threatened environments – the coast. Using the UK as a geographic focus, coastal ecology, change and management are explored with a particular emphasis on coastal dunes and shingle. This module will include fieldwork which may be residential and international.

Field survey (20 credits) - Following the introductory lectures, this module is field based with normally a minimum of 5 days residential fieldwork, along with non-residential day/evening trips. The module allows students to develop their skills of investigative ecology in the field.

Professional skills for ecology and environmental management (10 credits) - This module develops the personal, academic and professional skills required by students operating in the areas of ecology and environmental management. Through small group teaching and individual tutorials the module works towards a focus on the CPD and personal development needs of students.

Professional practice for ecologists and environmental managers (10 credits) - This module develops the professional practice required by students operating in the areas of ecology and environmental management. It addresses the expected standards in research and professional practice, with recognition of the ethical considerations and obligations to the environment and to society. The module is delivered on a tutorial based model.

Research project (60 credits) - The research project module involves the design, execution and critical evaluation of an approved research topic and the presentation of the research in the form of a dissertation or professional report.
