Assessment

The programme is assessed through course work and oral presentations/examinations in accordance with the awarding body's regulations. The course is based on individual, bespoke tuition provided by a team of distinguished coaches, including Dennis O’Neill, the Academy Director, Nuccia Focile, Jane Samuel, and a number of visiting consultants, such as Dame Kiri te Kanawa (WIAV’s honorary president), Ryland Davies, Anne Murray, Richard Bonynge, Joseph Rouleau, and so on. The programme provides the highest possible level of tuition for singers, either already in the profession or about to enter it. The Ancient History scheme allows you to study a wide range of modules covering not only fascinating figures like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, but also basic aspects of everyday life, such as warfare and the economy.

The MA Ancient History offers students whose interests centre on the study of ancient history the opportunity to take a specialist higher degree tailored to those interests. Students will take a balance of modules in both Greek and Roman history, and may focus on one or other of the two societies in their dissertation module. The MRes Ancient History offers students whose interests centre on the study of ancient history the opportunity to take a specialist research-intensive degree tailored to those interests and to pursue their own independent research to a further extent than in an MA.

Course Overview

The MRes is a degree best suited to students with a proven penchant for independent research. The MRes includes 60 credits (3 modules) of taught modules, but the main focus of the degree is on a longer piece of individual research (30,000 words). Applicants are required to discuss their proposed research with the School before application, and the proposed research must be in one of the areas of supervision offered by the School of Classics.

The MRes in Ancient History begins with a specialist Research Methodology module introducing students to the multiple sources, materials, theories and methodologies for the study of ancient Greek and Roman civilisations. Students then have the opportunity to choose two modules according to their own interests in the ancient world, with the option to specialise in a particular aspect of ancient history, whether in chronological terms, such as Greek or Roman history, or in terms of themes, such as the ancient economy. The choice of taught modules gives students not only the opportunity to explore areas that they might not have had the opportunity to study before, but also to specialise in a specific aspect of the ancient world in preparation for the MRes dissertation.

The dissertation is the greater part of the MRes in Ancient History, as students have the opportunity to conceive and research a topic of their own design of greater length and depth than the MA dissertation.

This will enable those students with a greater preference for independent research, and perhaps with a clearer sense at the start of the programme of what they would like to base their research upon, to undertake in-depth research within a structured programme of study. It will also provide students with an excellent introductory pathway into further study at MPhil or PhD level.

‌Our exciting new MRes in Engaged Anthropology is designed to develop students’ capacity to take anthropology out of the classroom into real-life contexts – and equip them with vocational skills to do so – while also encouraging them to take a critical approach to anthropological engagement, intervention and involvement in current social concerns and debates.

Course Overview

T‌he programme is divided into a 60 credit taught part and a Dissertation of 120 credits amounting to up to 30,000 words in total. In the taught element we offer advanced Social Anthropology, and the title ‘Engaged Anthropology’ reflects our unique approach to the discipline.

At UWTSD we encourage students to be anthropologists, apply their learning and engage with pressing issues – such as climate change, food security, globalisation and the preservation of the past – which people across the world are facing today.

As such, theory and practice are woven together as students reflect upon political and economic relations and broader power dynamics, both historically and in the contemporary world, and consider how individual and collective actions can challenge, create and/or reinforce social inequalities and injustices.

The programme is designed to encourage students to develop ethically sophisticated and sustainable approaches to social action, while also considering what sustainability – in relation to economic systems, cultural practices, community, knowledge, relations with the environment and the discipline of anthropology – and ethical practice means in cross-cultural settings.

This MSc provides significant technical content which will inform the management decision making process. In this context major organisations such as Tesco, Sainsbury and Amazon have been making significant investment into data warehousing and data mining technologies.

To effectively use this technology requires a large number of people to apply and manage the technology. The price of the technology has reduced significantly since the inception of data warehousing with Microsoft and Oracle supplying the appropriate add-on tools to their database management system products. These factors allow smaller organisations to gain a competitive advantage by utilising the large pool of transactional data that in some cases has been stored for many years.

In an industrial context, students may be required to manage teams of developers in small to large scale projects. To efficiently manage such projects, they will require a significant technical understanding of the issues arising to be able to appreciate the complexity of the tasks to be undertaken.

Indeed, in an SME this role is often fulfilled by a senior member of the development staff with both development and management duties. As either a developer or manager, the graduate would be expected to demonstrate their initiative and be able to use their research skills to rapidly adapt to the demands of new technology.

Assessment

Student works are assessed through combination of course works, lab based practical exams and written exam. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of course work set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by a written report and oral presentation. Part 2 of the MSc programme requires the student to research and prepare an individual project/dissertation of a substantial nature.

University students who are unable to successfully complete all aspects of the Part 1 may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits).

The MRes Art and Design will offer early career research students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate mastery in the theory, methods and practice of research within an Art and Design environment. The course will provide early career researchers with the intellectual, technical and professional tools with which to complete high quality research projects within the cultural and creative industry.

Course Overview

The MRes will be delivered through a combination of structured learning comprising of lectures and master classes. You will conduct a significant body of independent research which will facilitate theoretical thinking and creative development in a sustained way leading to the production of a considered and involved body of research. The programme will enhance your ability to manage complex research projects through an indepth independent investigation into an art and design related area identified by you.

The MRes will be staffed by experts across many specialisms in art and design, many of whom have international reputations in research in art and design. In addition, the course is supported through visiting lectures and external cultural industry bodies.

During the first semester The Thought Experiment randomises and radicalises approaches, providing an ‘experimental space’ to explore the boundaries of your current medium-specific practice by finding creative solutions to a research question stimulated by ‘new’ modes of thinking. This is supported by contemporary theoretical discourses focused through the Coexistent Perspectives module, which introduces a broad range of key theoretical concerns and how they can impact and converse with practice. Both the Thought Experiment and Coexistent Perspectives modules underpin the Research Methods and Communication module which explores both practice based and theoretical approaches to research methods. These three modules compliment each other and promote creative thinking, rigorous academic research and will give you the confidence to carry forward an independent research project into part two of the programme.

The culmination of the first semester is a ‘supervised research project’ that is carried into the second and third semester’s. Within part two of the programme (2nd and 3rd semesters) you will be given the option to choose either a Research Through Practice project or a 30,000 word Dissertation. The Research Through Practice option includes a 15,000 word dissertation which is informed and supported by a significant body of practice based work. You will be able to work on a topic of your own choice informed by part one of the programme in agreement with your tutor and Programme Director.

We have a long and distinguished tradition of specialist teaching in Biblical Studies going back many decades and, today, all our Biblical Studies staff continue to participate nationally and internationally in significant biblical research projects.

The School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies has a vibrant research culture, and MA students are encouraged to participate in research seminars.

The programme is delivered as a full-time and part-time programme of study, and is also available as distance learning. All module content is available through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and students will be supported throughout their studies through regular access to their module tutors, either one-to-one (by email, Skype, phone), in groups (using media such as Skype), or via VLE module discussion forums or wikis.

Campus-based students will be supported through lectures, research seminars and public lectures. An annual residential graduate summer school is held for all students in July where students are able to experience lectures and seminars covering both issues related to generic learning and subject-specific information and to engage with a number of our research students.

The MA Bilingualism and Multilingualism takes full advantage of the rich linguistic experience offered by Wales’ own bilingual context, as well as University of Wales Trinity Saint David's long-established expertise within this field as part of an extended network of institutions across Europe where bilingualism, multilingualism and language planning is an everyday phenomenon.

The degree offers modules which encompass a range of aspects on bilingualism and language planning in Wales and internationally. Different pathways are offered to meet the professional demands of a variety of careers in the field of bilingualism. It consists of five modules in Part One and a dissertation of 15,000 words in Part Two.

In Part One students may choose from a range of modules according to their personal professional or vocational needs, including:
-Introduction to Bilingualism
-Societal Bilingualism (political aspects of language vitality)
-Cognitive Aspects of Bilingualism
-Models of Bilingual Teaching
-Language Planning Essentials
-Research Methodology

Students will choose their own research subjects for the dissertation in Part Two based on aspects of the modules studied previously in Part One and agreed in advance with the Programme Director. It is intended that students will be given the opportunity to conduct in-depth research in a field of study which will promote their professional development.

Although the modular structure of the postgraduate degree allows students to study a single module, on the successful completion of three modules students will be eligible to exit the course with a Postgraduate Certificate in Bilingualism and Multilingualism, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingualism and Multilingualism on the completion of five modules. Students wishing to progress to the MA in Bilingualism and Multilingualism would undertake an additional dissertation.

The professional / vocational skills related to this programme will enable students to:
-Rise to the challenge which faces individuals in the field of bilingualism / multilingualism and language planning
-Undertake projects concerned with various aspects in the field
-Undertake individual and team research to promote linguistic plans and strategies
-Analyse and interpret data concerned with various developments
-Exhibit proficiency in the use of ICT in presentations and in communication

Students are given an opportunity to undertake field studies occasionally (eg in Scotland and Ireland) in order to study language revitalization projects and, when geographically convenient, to attend national and international conferences on bilingualism and language planning.

The advantage of the MA Bilingualism and Multilingualism to students is the flexibility which allows them to gain the necessary knowledge and skills through distance learning, by studying part-time or full-time and with the assistance of technology and the reading materials provided.

One can study as few as two modules per year and spread the cost over the period of study. By now, the course is studied by students in Wales and in various parts of the world including, for example, Italy, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Cyprus, Greece and Mongolia.

Assessment

A range of assessment methods are adopted in order to enable students to illustrate their knowledge and skills in relation to learning outcomes, including:
-Written assignments
-Presentations (adapted for distance learning purposes)
-Extended essays

Assessment methods are adopted on the basis of their appropriateness for ensuring that students can show that they have achieved the learning outcomes which are explicit in every module and on which the assessment criteria are based.

At the start of every module students are provided with:
-The assignment(s) for the assessment of the module and the weighting for each assignment
-A list of the criteria used to mark an assignment or presentation
-Further guidance in relation to the requirements of the set tasks and dates for presentation

Following the completion of an assignment, each student will receive:
-A formal report containing an assessment of the individual criteria on which the final mark was based, and feedback containing comments on how to improve as part of a formative process
-An opportunity to discuss the assignment with a tutor if necessary

Every assignment is assessed internally by a second-marker and by an external examiner.

Course Overview

Prospective candidates submit a proposal for a research project. Following approval, you are allocated a supervision team of two or three appropriate members of staff led by a Director of Studies.
