Online learning and master thesis

All course activities will be done within an online learning plat form, and you will write a master thesis (15 credits) in which you apply your theoretical and methodological knowledge in the Adult learning area. All these disciplines need to be optimised in order to achieve the functionality and efficiency required of an aircraft. The latter part of the programme involves a project in which these disciplines come together and challenge students to design, build and fly an aircraft, or a subscale version.

Industry affiliations

Linköping is the aviation capital of Sweden and one of few aviation cities in the world. Saab Aeronautics, the producer of the highly successful Gripen fighter aircraft, is a major actor in the region. Other related companies and military aviation establishments that reinforce Linköping’s aviation character are located in or near the city. The Aeronautical Engineering programme benefits from this, as some of the teachers have affiliations to the industry. Contemporary tools

In the two-year master’s program in Business Administration - Strategy and Management in International Organizations (SMIO), we aim to educate future leaders with good judgment, who can analyze complex problems and make well-balanced decisions.

The program combines fundamental academic knowledge (thinking and reasoning) and experiential knowledge (skills) to prepare students to go beyond applying known solutions to known problems.

The learning pillars of the program are research-based knowledge grounded in rich empirical examples, a focus on critical and in-depth analysis, and communication of results. The program combines the depth of a research master with the rich practical examples and casework-intensity of a more practical master. The program courses therefore each lay a solid research foundation in the form of articles and books by both classic and contemporary great thinkers. On top of that, each course provides insights into the workings of a number of international organizations (ranging from Starbucks and Apple to The Red Cross) and empirical phenomena (from CSR and outsourcing trends to business development in East Africa). Students then use their research-based foundation to draw connections, define problems and analyze through for example casework and projects. Each course also practices the students’ communication skills in one or more areas, through the writing of argumentative essays, oral presentations, feedback-sessions, debates and café seminars.

Child Studies is an interdisciplinary master’s programme that focuses on the critical study of questions related to children and childhood. The programme is mainly taught online, with some short campus periods.

The programme can be taken as a one-year master’s degree (60 credits) or a two‑year master’s degree (120 credits). A core focus of the programme is how to apply the latest research findings in order to critically review, develop and improve policies and practices related to children and childhood. The programme further provides the theoretical and methodological tools that prepare students for designing, planning and conducting research in topics that concern children, childhood and families.

The programme is hosted by the internationally renowned research department in Cchild Sstudies at Linköping University, which has conducted research in child and childhood studies since 1988. The teachers on the programme are active researchers, which guarantees that cutting-edge knowledge is presented in all courses.

Broaden and deepen your knowledge

The programme comprises one year (60 credits option) or two years (120 credits option) of full-time study. Both years include a research methods course and a master’s thesis course. This means that you can either finish your studies with a one-year master’s degree or continue to take the second year and obtain a two-year master’s degree.

During the first term, you will be introduced to the interdisciplinary field of child studies with a special focus on historical, anthropological and sociological perspectives. Each of the three courses introduces you to a methodological approach to child studies. You will learn more about how to design and conduct a research study in child studies during the two courses on methodology (terms 2 and 4), which will prepare you for your master’s theses – one in year one and one in year two. For each thesis you will have an individually appointed thesis supervisor.

Meet the world

The Master’s Programme in Child Studies is an international study programme and students on the programme usually have experiences from many different national and cultural contexts. Online and on-campus training

Most of the courses are taught online with the aid of a digital learning platform. Most of the course literature is also accessible on-line through the electronic resources of the LiU library. This allows for some flexibility as to where and when you conduct your studies. The programme has high academic standards, however, and requires full-time study.

In addition to online tuition, the programme comprises five on-campus periods of durations between 2 and 5 days, which are mandatory for all students. Mandatory and elective courses

New computational approaches based on machine learning, agent-based modelling, natural language processing, and network science have made it possible to analyse these data in ways previously unimaginable.

This is a chance to develop skills in computational techniques alongside a strong grounding in the principles and practice of contemporary social research. The programme’s quantitative methods training will help you harness complex data and use them to explore social theories and fundamental questions about societies. The programme’s theoretical and substantive training will introduce you to the principles of social inquiry and theories of human behaviour, and help you apply your technical skills to pressing social issues such as ethnic segregation in schools, income inequality, entrepreneurship, political change, and cultural diffusion.

Programme structure

During your first year you gain perspectives on the philosophy of social science, primers in the science of human decision-making, and frameworks for connecting individual behaviours to outcomes in social systems. Computer science is one of the most dynamic and expansive fields of science. In addition to having a deep understanding of the theoretical and technical foundations, professionals in this field must be able to apply the technology to challenging problems, and integrate it with other technologies. Applicants should have an adequate background in computer science and good programming skills.

The first three semesters include not only core courses in theoretical computer science and programming, but also elective courses such as artificial intelligence, databases and data mining, the design and programming of computer games, information security, advanced computer graphics, and human-computer interaction. Most courses feature lectures in theory and techniques, which are applied in practical laboratory work. Some courses also feature projects and seminars.

Five specialisations

The programme offers five specialisations:

This programme incorporates established and innovative design concepts in a unique interdisciplinary setup. Theoretical courses and design projects run alongside studio work. You develop generic design skills and knowledge of design facilitation, co-design and creative practices and design history. There is a strong focus on the practical application of ecological knowledge in society. You learn about environmental and natural resource management, and how it is implicated by various stakeholders. Courses cover population ecology, community ecology and ecology systems theories, including their relationship to current environmental problems. Furthermore, the programme has an internship period and a course that focuses on ecological decision support for forestry and agriculture.

One-year thesis project

The key part of the programme is a one-year master’s project in which students apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge. Design-project courses with the latest software

The programme starts with courses in digital communication, digital integrated circuits, digital system design, analogue integrated circuits, and an introduction to radio electronics, providing a solid base for the continuation of the studies.

Later on, a large selection of courses enables students to choose between two major tracks:

  • System-on-Chip, with a focus on digital System-on-Chip design and embedded systems
  • Analogue/Digital and RF IC design, with a focus on the design of mixed analogue/digital and radio-frequency integrated circuits.

The programme offers several large design-project courses, giving excellent opportunities for students to improve their design skills by using the state-of-the-art circuit and system design environments and the CAD tools used in industry today. Teaching involves formats with a high level of student participation. Teaching forms include lectures, workshops, seminars and individual/group tutorials. 

Areas of focus include historical and sociological perspectives on the ways in which migration shapes society; in-depth knowledge in the field of intersectional migration studies; globalisation and its link to changing conditions for work and migration; the European Union asylum policies;, theories of biopolitics, citizenship and exclusion; and the relation of race, ethnicity and migration to cultural and aesthetic expressions such as narratives, visual arts, theatre and cinema.

The faculty will be joined by international guest professors to make up an interdisciplinary and internationally experienced team, covering all aspects of the programme’s curriculum and beyond. The program thus offers a direct interface with ongoing research.

The Experimental and Medical Biosciences master’s programme prepares students for a scientific career within the broad field of the life sciences, with particular emphasis on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms related to health and disease.

The programme has been designed to provide students with frontline knowledge in biomedicine and related subjects. It unites theoretical knowledge with practical skills, as is most clearly seen in the individual experimental projects.

The master’s programme in Medical Biosciences at LiU received the highest rating in the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s assessment of Sweden’s biomedicine programmes, with five of the evaluated learning outcomes being appraised as Very High Quality and the sixth as High Quality - – the best result of all international biomedicine master’s programmes in Sweden.

Programme description

The Experimental and Medical Biosciences master’s programme prepares students for a scientific career within the broad field of the life sciences, with particular emphasis on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms related to health and disease.

The programme has been designed to provide students with frontline knowledge in biomedicine and related subjects. It unites theoretical knowledge with practical skills, as is most clearly seen in the individual experimental projects.

Courses are taught using several formats, including regular lectures, tutorial groups that apply problem-based learning (PBL), laboratory work and seminar discussions. The laboratory classes use powerful model systems to illustrate modern concepts of medical biology, while PBL promotes lifelong learning. After two initial, mandatory courses, elective courses offer individual study plans and flexibility in creating a profile that increases the employability of all students within the life sciences. Different areas such as cardiovascular biology, stem cells and applied regenerative medicine, medical genetics and neurobiology are covered. Scientific reasoning, ethical attitudes and multidisciplinary collaboration are given particular emphasis, in order to prepare students for an independent and professional future in biomedicine.

Individual projects in which students apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge are key parts of the programme. During the first year, the project in Experimental and Medical Biosciences will allow students to work with on a specific assignment for ten or twenty weeks. During the second year, a one‑term degree project (master’s thesis) is carried out. Both projects are chosen in collaboration with a supervisor, and the student’s aim is to define a research goal, carry out the experimental work and produce a written report that places the work in the context of current knowledge in the field. The degree project is conducted in a research laboratory, either at Linköping University or at another Swedish or international university, in industry or in the public sector.

Double‑degree programme

An extra feature of the programme is the possibility for a limited number of students to study in Vienna, Austria, during the second year. Apart from the experience, an additional degree is earned - – Master of Science in Engineering. Studies at the University of Applied Sciences, Technikum Wien, within the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine programme have a strong link to industry.
