The programme -

Focusing on international legal business structures, this master’s course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of international business agreements and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Students study a broad range of contemporary topics including legal regulation, mechanisms of obtaining redress in international commercial disputes, issues relating to the protection of creative endeavour in the digital environment, and the specifics of international trade.

Delving into these subjects teaches students about corporate social responsibility; the Law of Corporations; shareholder rights and the duties of directors; ‘private international law’; ‘conflict of laws’; arbitration agreements; intellectual property rights; domain names; licensing; digital rights management and encryption; data protection and information privacy.

During the course, students will also study standard trade terms, major international trade conventions, the sale, transport and regulation of goods, customs regulations, services and capital in the EU and beyond, e-commerce, electronic contracts, and computer crime.

Practice-based case studies give students the opportunity to apply newly acquired skills to the real world. A work-based project, either with a current employer or under placement, also provides first-hand experience of the field of international trade. The University can help finding placements, which could mean working with employers such as Medicom Healthcare, Lawdit Solicitors and other similar organisations.

Previous students have benefitted from a programme of guest lectures from speakers including commercial solicitors, managing partners, police officers, trading standards officers, barristers and members of the judiciary.

Course Content

LLM International Trade Regulation comprises five core units, including a work-based project which accounts for a third of the course.

Law and Regulation of International Business Organisations: This unit focuses on the functioning and types of business organisations typical across the world, and their legal regulation. Subjects include corporate social responsibility, the Law of Corporations, shareholder rights and the duties of directors.

International Commercial Enforcement and Dispute Resolution: This unit is primarily concerned with mechanisms of obtaining redress in international commercial disputes. It focuses on what is traditionally called ‘private international law’ or ‘conflict of laws’ but it develops further to cover areas such as arbitration and arbitration agreements.

Creativity and Regulation in the Global Digital Environment: This unit focuses on issues relating to the protection of creative endeavour in the digital environment, covering intellectual property rights, domain names, licensing, digital rights management and encryption, data protection and information privacy. You will also have a chance to build practical skills in the valuation of intellectual property and due diligence processes.

The International Market in Goods and Services: This unit focuses on the specifics of international trade, covering standard trade terms, major international trade conventions, the sale, transport and regulation of goods, and customs regulations. You will also study services and capital in the EU, e-commerce, electronic contracts and computer crime.

Work-Based Project: The work-based project provides an exciting opportunity to put your newly-learned knowledge to a practical purpose for either a current employer or as part of a short-term placement. Work experience -

The work-based project is a great opportunity to apply your learning to the real world. The University has a wide range of contacts with employers within the sector and you will be supported in finding and securing a suitable placement though ultimately it is the student’s responsibility to do so.

If you are already in employment and studying with us part-time, you may undertake the placement with your existing employer. In the unlikely event of a student not being able to secure a placement, a written project will be submitted instead.

The industry -

The retail workforce is projected to grow between 2013 and 2020, with job opportunities expected to increase for managerial positions in particular (Prospects, 2015). This unique degree programme will help you to capitalise on the growth, developing key skills that visual merchandising and product buying employers are seeking.

The programme -

With increasing competition in the retail sector, fashion merchandisers play a vital role in transforming ordinary store environments into exciting retail experiences. Students studying on Southampton Solent’s unique fashion merchandise management programme will undertake in-depth study of visual merchandising, retail design and fashion buying – delving into the psychological and cultural factors that influence consumer spending.

The curriculum also covers technical innovation and the place of technology in the modern retail environment. These contemporary innovations are examined alongside retail design, visual merchandising, in-store branding and the benefits of customer interaction.

Students can get involved in retail activities at Re:So, Solent’s student-run high-street store. Re:So stocks a range of fashion and craft products produced by our creative students, making it the ideal place to get hands-on visual merchandising experience. The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has previously hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills.

The course concludes with a final master’s project. This is a chance for students to specialise in an area that suits their unique career ambitions, applying the skills that they have learnt throughout the course. Project supervisors are chosen based on the topic of the dissertation, ensuring that students have one-to-one access to expert support.

The industry -

The UK film industry as a whole continues to go from strength to strength, with the number of companies involved in the film industry growing by 32% since 2009. As online video content becomes more and more popular, video production skills have become increasingly sought after by employers.

Many past students are running their own production businesses, working as in-house practitioners or securing budgets for creative projects through crowd-funding. This course will help students prepare for careers in video production, post-production, directing, producing and cinematography.

The programme -

This exciting course focuses on independent film-making and current practices in the film industry. Students will experiment with creative ideas from the outset, taking advantage of our industry-standard facilities, training and equipment.

Along the way students will be challenged to develop their own personal style of filmmaking, exploring new ideas and collaborating with other postgraduate students. Up-to-the-minute teaching and instruction help students to build on these skills and work towards their chosen career.

Students studying in the School of Media Arts and Technology benefit from a schedule of high calibre guest speakers and visiting fellows. Recent talks have been given by Anne V. The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

Course Content

Units include:

- PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) - this unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.
- Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) - students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.
- Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits) - this unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).
- Research Methods (15 credits) - this unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.
- Professional Development (30 credits) - this unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal development programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.
- Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits) - the culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

Work experience:

One unit (Professional Practice) requires a work placement or freelance project to be completed. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, practical portfolios, reflective reports, and campaign outputs. The major project/dissertation unit includes a presentation during the early stages of development. ‘PR in a Multimedia World’ includes an exam.

Our facilities -

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Web-based learning -

Solent’s virtual learning environment (VLE) provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information. The unit materials are posted on the VLE and students are expected to have reviewed them prior to attending class. The materials include journal articles, videos and web-based resources.

This intensive master’s degree helps students to improve their creative skills and build a solid understanding of visual communications theory. Shipping is a key link in the global supply chain and accounts for over 95 per cent of all imports and exports. With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under 4 per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at 3-4 per cent, opportunities in this industry continue to be as diverse and numerous as the cargo it carries.

The programme -

This interdisciplinary course combines traditional MBA content with elements that are unique to the world of shipping and maritime business. Students study all aspects of the maritime industry, exploring the global business environment and developing a greater understanding of the complex interactions between shipping companies, port authorities, businesses and governments.

Business modules cover a range of topics including advanced strategic planning, international marketing and scalable project management methodologies. Students will then apply this newly gained knowledge to a group consultancy project, working in teams to solve real workplace issues.
Maritime units look at global supply chain and logistics management, using this as a context from which to explore fundamental principles of international trade; investment risk; finance and maritime law.

The industry -

Acoustics offers an intellectual and practical challenge across a wide range of sectors - from manufacturing or construction to architecture, telecommunications and engineering.

Acousticians could be involved in designing and planning exciting new infrastructure projects such as airports, motorways and sports arenas; could be responsible for making aeroplanes and cars quieter; or could work on improving the sound quality of consumer electronics. Acousticians are also involved in the design of new buildings – from flats and houses through to skyscrapers and concert halls.

The programme -

Taught by experts with strong research and industry backgrounds, MSc Applied Acoustics offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience with the latest measurement, simulation and modelling technology. Students also study relevant scientific principles such as how humans respond to sound, acoustic physics, and how sound interacts with our environment.

We have excellent links with the Institute of Acoustics (IoA) and the Association of Noise Consultants, as well as a number of commercial companies across the sector. These include KP Acoustics, with whom we have a formal partnership for work placement and mentoring. The course has also been designed to meet the requirements for professional IoA registration.

To aid study and help perfect techniques, students have full access to the University’s laboratory and studio facilities. Students will be able to undertake acoustic measurement and laboratory projects using a wide range of test equipment such as sound level meters, a 16-channel data acquisition system, head and torso simulators, a laser vibrometer and ambisonic microphones. Students will also have access to cutting-edge simulation and modelling software, including MATLAB, NI Labview, CadnaA, CATT Acoustic, and EASE.

The University also offers access to specialist facilities for the testing and demonstration of acoustic and electro-acoustic principles, including a hemi-anechoic chamber, audio isolation booths for sound recording and audiometric testing, and the University’s own digital 3D cinema.

Thanks to the course team’s strong industry connections, students have access to guest speakers from a range of relevant organisations. Previous speakers have included Mark Murphy and Jim Griffiths (Vanguardia Consulting), Nicholas Jones (Hilson Moran) and Phil McIlwain (Westminster City Council).

Teaching, learning and assessment -
The course is taught through classroom seminars/lectures, laboratory sessions and independent learning, as well as your supervised research project. While some laboratory sessions entail working in a group, all assessment is individual.

Partial credit can be awarded to holders of the Institute of Acoustics diploma in acoustics and noise control against equivalent taught modules of the MSc. Please contact the course team for further information.

Work experience -

There are a number of opportunities for work experience with professional partners and contacts, as well as through the University’s own Solent Acoustics consultancy.

Past students have worked on a range of projects, including for Truck Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Westminster City Council and KP Acoustics.

Additionally, the Professional Skills and Practice unit involves organising your own work placement with an external company, supported by staff and making use of the course team’s industry contacts.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.
