COURSE CONTENT

THE SUBJECT

Even in the current economic climate, the demand for Masters level Aerospace Engineering graduates has remained strong and continues to grow.

To facilitate postgraduate education in an era of rapidly evolving technology an MSc in Advanced Aerospace Engineering will be delivered by the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen's.

This novel program will augment the undergraduate education of those who complete it through a combination of advanced scientific knowledge, interpersonal, research and management skills. It will provide postgraduate training for Bachelors degree and PhD students and will provide a pool of highly-qualified MSc graduates for recruitment into industry and to PhD study.

This will be achieved through the delivery of masters level taught elements as well as the completion of novel, industrially relevant research projects.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

Students must take and pass taught modules equivalent to 120 CAtS points and complete a dissertation, which is equivalent to 60 CATS points.

Taught elements may be selected from a list which includes novel modules on aircraft maintenance management and digital manufacturing. The normal load is 60 CATS points per semester.

The programme is available for both full-time and part-time modes of study. Part-time students will take 2 or 3 modules per semester, with all 120 CATS points being completed within 3 years.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY

Formal lectures are presented, but students will also acquire knowledge and understanding experientially through assignments as well as individual and group project work.

Assessment is based on written examinations, coursework and oral presentations by both individuals and groups.

The School provides a supportive learning environment with an emphasis on IT provision and the use of advanced engineering simulation platforms.

Queen's University is offering an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering comprising modules from its internationally recognised and accredited MEng course.

A broad range of modules is available with a strong foundation in physical science and numerical analysis. Topics include advanced materials, structures and dynamics, power and energy, design and managment.

The aims of the programme are:

1. To support students in the development of their intellectual and practical skills through the study and interpretation of cultural heritage artefacts, their historic societal significance and relationship with the landscape and the wider environment in the past and the present.

2. To demonstrate how geo-spatial technologies and techniques (including GIS, scanning and digitisation) play a central role in the recording, analysis, interpretation and management of cultural heritage across a range of scales from excavated items, archaeological sites, and paper records to historic buildings, monuments and their landscapes.

WHY QUEEN'S?

In the new programme the internationally recognised expertise within GAP with regard to the development and application of digitisation and scanning technologies will be more fully used and integrated into the student learning experience.

The integration of these skills with wider academic expertise in Archaeology and the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF), and Geography and the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis (CDDA) will create a unique 'heritage' focused programme in which students will experience heritage in its widest context and will have the opportunity to acquire and practice a wide range of geo-spatial skills and explore the conceptual issues associated with their application.

The dissertation submission is an independent piece of research undertaken by each student under the supervision of an academic member of staff. Both formative and summative feedback will be given through, as appropriate, oral and written means. The pass mark for all assessments is 50 per cent. Students must obtain an overall 50 per cent pass mark for this taught programme (five modules) before progression from the PG Diploma to Masters.

The EdD is a partly taught and partly research-based Professional Doctorate in Education which has proved to be both successful and convenient for senior professionals in education and related fields. We offer a wide range of taught modules in the areas of research methods, education policy, education management and professional development. Dissertations are supported within the specialist research centres at the School of Education including effective education, shared education, children’s rights, and autism.

Aims

On successful completion of the programme students will have made an original and independent contribution to educational knowledge in the field determined by the topic of their research dissertation study. They will, through this dissertation, demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relevant literature, a high level of competence in appropriate research methods, and the ability to communicate their results and their implications.

The EdD programme may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis. The normal period of study will be not less that three years full-time or not less than four years part-time. The aim is to allow flexibility for busy professionals, enabling you to complete the degree with minimal disruption to your professional and personal life.

The EdD comprises nine taught doctoral modules (of which four must be research modules) and a research dissertation. The research dissertation has the same level of challenge and high standards as a PhD but is approximately half the scale (40,000 words). Each module is assessed by one 5000 word assignment. The University operates a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Scheme which recognises relevant prior assessed and certified learning for credit purposes. This is also known as credit transfer where the credits were awarded by another Higher Education (HE) provider. Applicants who have completed a masters degree within the last 10 years that involved a substantive element of educational research methods training, including a research-based dissertation or project, may be eligible to transfer credit. Applicants for RPL should submit the RPL Application Form to the Postgraduate Administrator, 20 College Green, Belfast, BT7 1LN. The JD is a first professional doctorate degree required for licensure in the field of law. The programme delivers a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) to graduates from a discipline other than law and provides the necessary professional exemptions to allow holders to apply for the professional stage in England and Wales, North America and elsewhere.

The JD is taught via intensive, small-group teaching, with each student expected to participate fully in each module. European Union law has become highly significant over recent decades, not just for member states but beyond in transnational and international governance. Despite the multiple crises currently faced by the European Union, European Integration remains a key process shaping developments in the member states, the neighbour countries and international regulatory reforms and governance processes.

The LLM in European Law and Governance aims to generate a comprehensive understanding of EU and transnational law and governance in a global context and to enable graduates to critically approach a range of problems in the field, with a specialisation either on substantive aspects or on procedural aspects of the theme.

The programme is unique in offering a law in context approach to European Union Law, Transnational Law by teaching substantive law alongside legal theory and political and sociological approaches to federalism and multilevel governance. A high level of academic engagement is complemented by the opportunity to obtain subject specific placements in a competitive process.

Queen’s Law School has more than 25 years’ experience in delivering an LLM in Human Rights Law. Throughout that period it has constantly reviewed and revised what it offers as part of the degree, shifting the content from time to time depending on the human rights issues that are most prominent and on the expertise of staff available to teach the various subjects. For the re-structured LLM starting in September 2015 we will be harnessing as much of our joint expertise as possible to provide a vibrant and relevant course which will stimulate the hearts as well as the minds of students who are taking it. The focus will remain on international human rights law (including at regional levels in Europe, Africa and the Americas) but there will be concentration as well on the practice of human rights, especially in the contexts of discrimination, armed conflicts, terrorism and migration.

The protection of human rights at the international level is a relatively new branch of law. Since World War Two there has been a huge growth in the number and variety of human rights standards set out in international treaties and in other so-called ‘soft law’ documents. This LLM provide students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth appreciation of what has gone right and what has gone wrong and to suggest ways in which human rights could be protected more effectively so that human beings everywhere can realise their full potential.

This LLM programme is an exciting and rewarding degree course which attracts a diverse student body: students who are qualified legal practitioners and students with extensive experience in the statutory, community or voluntary sectors nationally and internationally. The diversity among both staff and students allows the students and teachers on the course to learn from each other and makes for a vibrant academic experience.

From a human rights’ perspective, the focus will be on international human rights law (including at regional levels in Europe, Africa and the Americas) but there will be concentration as well on the practice of human rights, especially in the contexts of discrimination, armed conflicts, terrorism and migration.

The criminal justice component of the programme allows students to explore the inter-relationships between crime, justice and society in comparative context. Modules assess criminal justice policies and institutions from an interdisciplinary perspective and allow for in-depth analyses of topical issues in criminal justice and criminology at local, national, regional and international levels.
