This programme gives students the opportunity to develop deep understanding and analytical excellence in a field of increasing importance, international studies. A wide selection of modules allows them to specialise in a variety of different areas. Dissertations are written under the guidance of experienced academic staff, which includes world-leading experts on China, Japan, the UK, the US, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Russia, among others. Students will be introduced to key concepts and theories, will be trained in research methods, and gain access to (and we hope contribute to) the latest research in international relations and world history.

Students can choose from a range of modules in international relations and international history, which include, in addition to subjects directly related to international relations and world history, modules in diplomacy/foreign policy analysis, development, international economics, international organisations, European politics, regionalism, traditional and non-traditional security, environmental policy, area studies (including China, Russia, the US, Europe, the UK, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, etc.) and of course research methods, to name a few. Small seminars allow students to develop their analytical skills, and oral and written presentation techniques, as well as their capacity to research, compile and produce thematic reports, essays, and papers.

Case studies and occasional simulation games deepen students’ theoretical and practical knowledge of negotiations, diplomacy, world history and international relations. The dissertation will give students the opportunity to prove the breadth and depth of their knowledge.

Course structure

The MA in International Relations and World History is offered as a two year programme. A part time path is also an option. Students must take 240 credits to graduate, comprised of 60 credits each semester for three semesters (four modules each semester at 15 credits each), plus 60 credits for the dissertation (normally done the final semester of the second year). Students must pass the taught components before proceeding to the dissertation.

About the course

The course is designed for students who wish to develop an understanding and working knowledge of the principles and applications of a variety of surveying devices and techniques.

Versions of this course have been running at The University of Nottingham in the UK for almost 20 years. This course runs entirely at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), providing students with the ability to appreciate and apply state-of-the-art engineering surveying techniques within a practical context. It includes the principles underpinning surveying, such as reference systems and geodesy, as well as the techniques and equipment used in engineering surveying, photogrammetry and satellite positioning systems such as GPS. UNNC is located in an excellent GNSS coverage area, from which both BeidouI+II/Compass and QZSS satellites can be observed.

In addition to the formal part of the course, we run practical classes that allow students to see and learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state-of-the-art surveying equipment and software, including laser scanners, servo driven total stations, RTK and Network RTK GPS, digital and analogue photogrammetry, LiDAR, SAR and InSAR.

Students studying this course will be develop the ability to:

  • apply their skills directly within the surveying industry
  • react quickly to new technologies and innovations
  • communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and through making presentations to groups
  • exercise original thought, as well as gain interpersonal, communication and professional skills 
  • plan and undertake an individual project

The course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES).

Course structure and content

The course consists of 120 credits of taught modules along with a 60 credit major individual research-based project undertaken over the summer term. It will normally take the form of scientific investigation whether it involves experimentation or an extensive review of work already completed by others. The structure of this programme is modular, with individual taught modules each typically have a weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study including formal teaching, independent study, revision, and preparation for assessments. BIM is a growing technology used in the building industry worldwide. It uses digital techniques to create and use intelligent 3D models to communicate building project decisions. GIS is a technical system to implement the collection, storage, management, calculation, analysis, display and description of geospatial information data. The results help to understand what is happening in a geographical space which can increase efficiency in building planning and design. The current ‘lack of BIM innovation’ and ‘lack of BIM talent’ could delay the progress of Chinese “smart” cities, which aim to reduce resource consumption and cost and use digital technologies to benefit their citizens.

This programme will be run entirely at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) with internship opportunities in leading BIM companies in China. It is a collaboration between Department of Architecture and Built Environment and Civil Engineering. In particular, research and teaching support will be provided by two leading research laboratories including Geospatial BIM lab and Digital City Infrastructure and technology Innovation Laboratory (D-CiTi Lab). These laboratories are working closely with leading AEC consultants (Arup, WSP BP), international professional institutions (RICS, ICES, CIBSE) and leading BIM software vendors (Autodesk, Bentley, Leica, Tekla, Trimble).

Students are able to learn how to use and operate a very wide variety of state-of-the-art software, as well as surveying equipment including servo driven total stations, laser scanners, GNSS, digital and analogue photogrammetry. With extensive project and consultancy experience on the Geospatial Engineering, BIM in the AEC sector in the UK and China, the team is planning to promote the Smart City with multi-dimension BIM applications across China.

Programme outline

The MSc in International Business is either a full-time degree studied over a period of a calendar year commencing late September or a part-time degree that can be studied over a period of between 2 and 4 years. In each case participants take taught modules and prepare a dissertation. Students without the relevant English proficiency are required to do a Summer pre-sessional programme before gaining entry onto the postgraduate programme.

Classes are in the form of two or three hour teaching/learning sessions that include some small group teaching and study. 

The structure is modular, with individual modules each having a weighting of 15 credits. One credit represents 10 hours of student work, meaning that a 15 credit module represents 150 hours of study. This includes formal teaching, independent study, revision, and the preparation of assessments. The MSc degree requires the successful completion of 180 credits, 120 of which are taught modules, and 60 an international management dissertation.

All students undertake core modules relating to international business. The remaining modules offer a choice of electives. These allow the student to focus upon the modules with an international emphasis that is most closely associated with his/her career aspirations.

It is a commonplace that communication is at the core of crucial aspects of human life, and that a lot of that communication is mediated. In recent years, however, mediated communication has reached new levels of importance in social and cultural domains stretching from business to identity formation, and a lot of that communication is technically and financially underpinned by global networks of computation and communication. The academic fields of media, communication and cultural studies have responded by re-examining long-established frameworks for understanding communications and also by considering the need for new paradigms fitting new objects of study.

The MA in International Communications Studies - which is designed to meet the needs of graduates from both a communications and non-communications studies background - provides an opportunity not only to study communications against the background of recent theoretical and methodological developments, but also to gain an insight into the skills and knowledge required by the contemporary media and communication industries.

Aims

The aims of the MA International Communications Studies programme are to enable students to:

  • Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical bases of verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Enhance their knowledge and understanding of the cultural, social, political and economic bases of communications internationally
  • Acquire a high level of proficiency in an East-Asian language or in one European language other than English
  • Develop their intellectual skills
  • Make use of some of the specialised forms of knowledge in the disciplines represented on the degree
  • Practice and develop a wide range of transferable skills that will prepare students for further study and for employment

Course Structure

The compulsory modules strike a balance between, on the one hand, grounding the student’s learning in the classic concepts, theories and methods of media, communication and cultural studies, and, on the other hand, exploring contemporary trends in online business models, international news flows, the use of Big Data etc.

Towards the end of the second semester, each student is assigned a dissertation supervisor based on project proposals.

Semester One

Compulsory modules provide the core skills and knowledge needed to analyse various forms of communication in their contemporary social and cultural settings as well as an opportunity to acquire either a modern European (French, Spanish, German) or East-Asian language (Japanese or Chinese). 

Semester Two

Students will continue to study their chosen language. Students will continue to develop their dissertation projects with the aid of their supervisors and in the compulsory module. Optional modules allow students to immerse themselves in topics suiting their interests and future career goals.

Course content and structure

We begin by exploring the broad context of higher education in an era of globalisation and how this is driving diverse forms of internationalisation in higher education. We then look at strategies and managerial demands of different models of internationalisation, followed by a specific focus on the core activity of enhancing student experiences in an internationalising institution.

The programme concludes with an opportunity for in-depth investigation of internationalisation within a particular function in a higher education institution – chosen by the student. This will enhance personal capacity in strategic analysis for informed decision-making in future professional practice. The programme, therefore, moves from context to strategy and from strategy to practice, so that reflection on practice is situated and contextualised.

This programme gives students the opportunity to develop deeper understanding and analytical excellence in two fields of increasing importance, international relations and international business, drawing from the combined strengths of UNNC’s School of International Studies and Nottingham University Business School (NUBS). A wide selection of modules allows them to specialise in a variety of different areas in international relations and international business. Dissertations are written under the guidance of experienced academic staff, which include world-leading international relations experts focusing on China, Japan, the UK, the US, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Russia, among others. Students will be introduced to key concepts and theories in both fields, will be trained in research methods, important historical and contemporary cases and hot-button issues, and gain access to (and we hope contribute to) the latest research in international relations and international business.

Students can choose from a range of modules in international relations and international business, which include, in addition to subjects directly related to international relations and international business, modules in diplomacy/foreign policy analysis, development, international economics, dimensions of world history, international organisations, European politics, regionalism, traditional and non-traditional security, environmental policy, area studies (including China, Russia, the US, Europe, the UK, Japan, the Middle East, Africa, etc.) and of course research methods, to name a few. Small seminars allow students to develop their analytical skills, and oral and written presentation techniques, as well as their capacity to research, compile and produce thematic reports, essays, and papers.

Case studies and occasional simulation games deepen students’ theoretical and practical knowledge of negotiations, diplomacy, world history and international relations. The dissertation will give students the opportunity to prove the breadth and depth of their knowledge.

Course structure

The MA in International Relations and International Business is offered as a one year programme (twelve full months). This degree programme can also be taken in a part time capacity over two years.
