Our MSc Advanced Audiology Studies course is aimed at practising audiologists who want to prepare for advanced roles in clinical management, clinical practice, teaching and research.

The course consists of a mixture of audiology-specific units and those shared with health professionals from a range of other disciplines, enabling you to tailor the course to your own interests.

You will learn from internationally recognised experts at the Manchester Centre for Audiology and Deafness (ManCAD).

You may choose to complete 60 credits for a PGCert (exit award) or 120 credits for a PGDip.

On successful completion of 120 credits, progression to the full MSc qualification allows you to explore, in depth, a specific aspect of audiology practice, policy, research or education in a 60-credit, 12,000 to 15,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Many of the staff involved with the course are actively involved in either scientific or pedagogical research.

Where possible, members of staff teach course units related to their research interests and are in a position to keep their teaching informed and up-to-date.

A large number of the teaching staff are also clinically trained audiologists, hearing therapists or hearing scientists.

We use a range of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, small group work, student-led seminars, problem-based learning and online learning.

You will also be required to undertake independent study to further develop and consolidate your learning.

Where appropriate, and with individual arrangements, some audiology units may include participation in practical skills laboratories.

Coursework and assessment

You will be assessed using a variety of methods within individual units and across the course as a whole.

All assessments require you to integrate knowledge and understanding, and apply this to your own practice relevant to the outcomes of each unit.

  • literature reviews
  • change proposals.

The full MSc qualification requires an extended written piece of work (12,000-15,000 words) that focuses on a specific aspect of audiology practice, policy or research in the form of an extended literature-based review.

Course unit details

Taught units can be studied in any order except where there are specific pre-requisites.

Not all optional units may run each year and will be subject to minimum numbers. You will meet with your course director to plan out a pathway that meets your needs.

Part-time students on the PGDip or MSc course will need to complete 60 credits per year as required for the award. Attendance at the university will vary depending on which units you choose to take. Some units are delivered online, some face-to-face over a number of days, and others are delivered via traditional lectures on a weekly basis.

An exit award of PGCert is available to students exiting after completing 60 credits. This must include at least 15 credits of audiology-specific units from those available.

A maximum of 30 credits of individual course units can also be studied on a standalone basis.

Teaching and learning

We use modern, innovative teaching and learning methods which have proved extremely successful and are enjoyed by our students. Much of the source materials and study aids are available through Blackboard (the University's web learning package) which has the advantage of enabling you to carry out much of your study when and where you want. You take part in face-to-face lectures, seminars and laboratory classes.

The aim of this course is to provide students with a state-of-the-art collection of knowledge, understanding, and skills in the area of Advanced Computer Science. This collection aims to be of particular depth so as to provide the student with the relevant knowledge, understanding, and skills to prepare them for a career in Computer Science research. It is designed for students with a good first degree in Computer Science or related areas who wish to deepen their understanding, knowledge, and skills, and aim at a research career in either Industry or Academia.

A student following this course chooses two themes, each consisting of a conceptually coherent set of two course units of 15 credits each, and they take three course units out of these. In addition, they follow three Research Seminars COMP80122, COMP80131, COMP80142 of 5 credits each. This will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills in Research methodology, ethics and professional issues, as well as communication and presentation skills. As part of COMP80122, students actively participate in the school's annual research symposium, held in reading week between Period 1 and 2.

Teaching and learning

We use a variety of teaching forms, from face-to-face lectures via supervised and unsupervised labs, to self-study elements and supervised projects. Where appropriate, we use blended learning and enquiry based learning.

All our taught course units use coursework as a part of fomative assessment, to deepen and assess both knowledge and understanding and to teach and assess relevant skills.

Coursework and assessment

Course units are assessed through coursework (50%) and end-of-semester examination (50%). A student following this programme chooses two themes, each consisting of a conceptually coherent set of two course units of 15 credits each, and they take three course units out of these. In addition, they follow three Research Seminars COMP80122, COMP80131, COMP80142 of 5 credits each. This will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills in Research methodology, ethics and professional issues, as well as communication and presentation skills. As part of COMP80122, students actively participate in the school's annual research symposium, held in reading week between Period 1 and 2.

This makes up the 60 credits taught part of the course.

The MRes research project is worth 120 credits and consists of the following parts: a taster project (10 credits) plus the research project (110 credits), which can but do not have to be related to the same subject and supervised by the same supervisor. The taster project is assessed via a short report. The research project is assessed in two parts, through the Project Progress Report (30 credits) and the Dissertation (80 credits).

A student who chooses two themes that belong to a given pathway, and whose project is in an area suitable for this pathway (which is determined by the examiners) can choose to graduate with an MRes in Advanced Computer Science with a specialisation in an available themes in their course options.

Control Engineering is a multi-disciplinary subject, with applications across a wide range of industrial sectors. The Control Systems Group in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester has been running an MSc course in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering since 1968. The course is geared for graduates from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines.

The aims of the course are to:

  • provide an advanced education in control and systems engineering, emphasising modern theoretical developments and their practical application
  • give a sound fundamental understanding of the principles underlying the operation of control systems
  • enable students to apply modern control principles in various areas of industry

Students acquire a range of intellectual skills that cover the design, analysis and simulation of control systems. A strong emphasis is placed on practical and transferable skills through laboratory exercises and the use of software packages.

The taught part of the course comprises six course units of 15 credits each. This is assessed by written examinations, coursework and laboratory reports.

Graduates from the course are employed in a variety of industries, including process and petro-chemical industries, manufacturing, power generation and the automotive and aerospace sectors. Recently there has been a surge in demand for control engineers in the field of biomedicine. More generally feedback control and systems engineering skills play an important part in an ever widening range of high tech applications.

Power system engineering is about keeping things in balance. Not just the balance between generation and load or between production and consumption of reactive power. It is also about the balance between the cost of energy and its environmental impact or the balance between the reliability of the supply and the investments needed to develop the system. This course will teach you how to quantify both sides of these equations and then how to improve the balances through technological advances and the implementation of sophisticated computing techniques.

In the first semester you learn how power systems are designed and operated. This involves studying not only the characteristics of the various components (generators, lines, cables, transformers and power electronics devices) but also how these components interact. Through lectures and computer based exercises you become familiar with power flow and fault calculations and you learn how the techniques used to study the behaviour of large systems. Experiments in our high voltage laboratory give you an appreciation for the challenges of insulation co-ordination.

During the second semester the course units explore in more depth the 'operation' and the 'plant' aspects of power systems. For example, you will study how renewable generation is integrated in a power system or how to assess and remedy power quality problems.

Prior to your summer break a preliminary study and the outline of your MSc dissertation project is completed, this is fully developed throughout the second year of the course. The yearlong enhanced individual research provides you great opportunities to develop advanced research skills and to explore in depth some of the topics discussed during the course. This includes training in research methods, and advanced simulation and experimental techniques in power systems and high voltage engineering as well as academic paper writing and poster and paper presentation.

  • Provide an advanced education in electrical power engineering.
  • Give graduates the education, the knowledge and the skills they need to make sound decisions in a rapidly changing electricity supply industry.

The enhanced research project is assessed on the basis of a research poster, an extended abstract, a research papers and a dissertation of about 70 pages.

The course is a flexible evidence-based postgraduate course in contemporary advanced forensic mental health practice and research that is open to students from a multidisciplinary and multiagency background.

The course is suitable for clinical or social care staff who are currently employed in, or who desire to be employed in, a forensic setting or those settings where service users have forensic mental health needs.

This would include settings such as:
-Secure hospitals
-Prisons
-Ministry of Justice
-Probation
-Community-based services for mentally disordered offenders
-Private/independent secure sector providers

The course would also be suitable for staff currently employed in settings where service users present with complex mental health/psychological needs with risk behaviours or vulnerabilities that place them at risk of contact with the criminal justice system or forensic mental health services.

This would include settings such as:
-Patient intensive care units
-Early intervention services
-Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) inpatient services
-Substance misuse services
-Learning disability services

Staff not holding a professional qualification may be eligible to apply but will need to seek advice from the Programme Director as regards the suitability of the course.

The course aims to be skills-based, so that students return to services with demonstrable skills to meet service objectives.

The part-time course will be run on a part-time modular basis with four units per year for the first two years.

The full-time course will feature eight units from September to May and a dissertation from June to September.

Teaching will be a blend of face-to-face teaching, e-learning and supervised clinical practice. The third year will be dedicated to completion of the Masters dissertation under close supervision from University staff.

The course is designed to be flexible, to enable students to balance academic work with existing workplace demands. Students can also choose one optional unit within the course.

Teaching sessions will be prepared and presented by leading authorities in the field of forensic mental health. We have a number of affiliated staff who are leading authorities in forensic and related mental health issues including Professor Jenny Shaw, Professor Louis Appleby, Dr Caroline Logan, Dr Jane Senior, Dr Roger Webb and Dr Charlotte Lennox.

There will be an initial induction at the commencement of the course, which is generally two-days. Following this, the course requires one day per week dedication for the part-time pathway, and two days per week full-time during term-time, which will involve periodic attendance at University.

In order to achieve the practical-skills outcomes associated with some course units, the equivalent of one day per week in practice will be required.

Students are required to identify a suitable practice supervisor/mentor to oversee and assess the clinical and/or practice work required for the course units.

Full-time students will require access to a suitable clinical or similar placement.

Career opportunities

The course will equip students with the knowledge and skills to deliver quality evidence based forensic related mental health practice. This knowledge and the skills required will better enable students to lead and initiate service development work, which will support career development. The course provides numerous career opportunities within forensic and related services. Those completing the programme will be in an excellent position to apply for advanced practice positions, senior clinical roles, research opportunities and senior management positions in services based in a variety of services including hospitals, prison and/or the community.

Those completing the masters will be encouraged to undertake further PhD studies at the University and they will be assisted in applying for research positions and research funding.
