- How you will be taught

Module material is very much focused on clinical practice which will encourage students to reflect on perspectives and experiences and allow them to identify way of application to their own clinical setting. Module material is constantly updated to be relevant to current issues and drivers and activities are designed to represent real clinical scenarios. There may also be opportunities for focused visits if relevant and available.

There are 5 modules and students normally take 5 years to complete part-time or 3 years full-time.

•Modules 3-5 - Research project(s) consisting of approximately 15,000 words each. It can be 3 small interconnected projects, a double project plus 1, or a single large project.

Up to two modules (one, if granted direct entry to module 2) may be overtaken by Recognition of Prior Learning.

How are Professional Doctorate programmes delivered?

The taught component of module 1 is normally delivered online, so you can complete it in your own time at a distance. If you already have a Masters degree, with an assessed element of research methods, you may not need to complete this module.

These modules are presented as a thesis and assessed by oral examination (viva voce) at the end of the programme.

How will my progress be monitored?

Your progress will be monitored in a variety of ways:

Supervision
Students meet with their supervisors at least every month to support and guide students through their Professional Doctorates.

Presentations and fora
From time to time students are expected to make presentations about their work to other students and staff. This aims to help support students with their work and to build on their work so far. There are also online fora for students to discuss issues relating to their research.

Thesis Monitoring Committee
A Doctoral student’s progress is monitored by an independent Thesis Monitoring Committee within the School. This Committee consists of at least two members of staff not concerned with a student’s supervision and it meets twice per year for full time students, and one per year for part-time students.
After 12 months of study, Doctoral students are expected to present their work to their Thesis Monitoring Committee who will determine the level the student is working at – either Masters of Doctoral level. This process is called Transfer of Ordinance and it confirms whether a student will continue to the next stage of their Professional Doctorates or whether they should transfer to the MPhil programme. Part-time students will normally present before the end of their second year of study.

Viva
At the end of study, students undertake an examining process called Viva Voce to present their thesis to an Examination Board who will determine whether a student’s work is of a high enough standard to be awarded a Professional Doctorate.

What academic skills support will I receive?

We provide Research Methods and Generic Skills Training and students are assigned two supervisors (relevant to the area of a students’ doctorate) who meet with them regularly. Supervision can take place by telephone, email and video conferencing. Guidance can also be drawn from other relevant members of staff with specific expertise.

How will I be guided through the Professional Doctorate?

The University Code of Practice for Supervised Postgraduate Research provides clear guidance on your responsibilities as a student and how you will be supported. Students also receive a School Student Handbook which provides further detail.

What facilities will I have access to?

Professional Doctorates students have access to doctoral student office accommodation, high quality IT facilities, telephones, printing/photocopying and access to financial support to attend research conferences.

The Professional Doctorate is a vehicle for advanced Continuing Professional Development, not a certificate of competence to practice. The aims of the programme are:

Programme Content

The Professional Doctorate consists of five modules. The first module focuses on research methods, combining an online course on research methodology, an applied dissertation and a learning plan.

The second of the programme modules comprises a critical literature review. The remaining three consist of a series of linked research projects or a combination into two or one larger project.

Up to two modules (40%) of the programme may be overtaken by Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants with a full masters degree containing an assessed research methods component may be entitled to skip module one. Otherwise, material for RPL should not been submitted for any other award and be of doctoral standard. Peer reviewed journal publications or research reports are good examples of suitable products for recognition.

Structure of the Programme

The structure is of 5 Modules spread over 3 Levels. All modules are individually tailored to theinterests/expertise of the entrant and the needs of their employer or sponsor. They are very flexible and adapted to the needs of part-time candidates. Each Level can be independently award-bearing, if candidates wish to leave with a lesser award.

At Level 1, candidates undertake Research Methods Training and complete a Critical Analysis and Review of Research Literature (in their specialist area of choice). (You can exit here with a Postgraduate Diploma in advanced professional practice.)

At Level 2, each candidate develops an Individualised Learning Plan for future modules. They then complete a second research module on a topic of their choice. (You can exit here with a Master’s degree in advanced professional practice.)

At Level 3, there are Modules 3, 4 and 5. These are also research modules on a topic or topics of your choice. They may be related to each other or quite independent of each other. Each module is assessed by a written product of 15,000 words.

Recognition of Prior Learning is possible for up to 50% of the degree, when the material for recognition has not been submitted for any other award and when it is of a high enough standard. Peer reviewed journal publications or research reports are good examples of suitable products for recognition.

Methods of Assessment

The total written output required is the same as Ph.D. candidates would put into one single thesis. However, for the Professional Doctorate this can be split into five modular products each of around 15,000 words each. You can combine these into larger and deeper studies if you wish, subject to the agreement of your personal supervisor. The standards and criteria are rigorous, as you would expect at doctoral level, but you are given support to ensure you achieve those standards. These written assignments are intended to be easily reducible to a paper which can be submitted for publication, and candidates are strongly encouraged and supported to do this.
All modular work is collected into a final thesis. This is then assessed by viva voce (oral) examination.

Sources of Funding

The School of Education, Social Work and Community Education is not currently offering any school scholarships.
Other sources of funding for postgraduate students can be found on our Scholarships webpage.
Many candidates approach their employers for allocation of time and/or part funding, especially where modular work relates to the employer's objectives and adds value to the employer's operations. This is entirely reasonable, as modular work will entail candidates working significantly more than their contracted hours of employment. However, candidates will also be enhancing their own promotion prospects, so it is equally reasonable to expect them to be prepared to part fund fee costs, especially where modular topics are not obviously of value to their current employers. In addition, where modular work relates to a wider national project, part of fee costs might be recouped through the project budget. Creativity and flexibility are needed in securing an appropriate balance of funding.

Practical skills will be taught first using a combination of natural and plastic teeth in a laboratory. Clinical skills will be further developed by treating patients under supervision.

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be comprised of a one-hour written short-answer examination for each taught module. You will carry out a research project related to endodontology and produce a typed and bound dissertation. This will include a critical review of the literature. It is anticipated that the proportion of time spent on the research project should be approximately 25% of the course.

The results of modular assessments, logbook of clinical activity, case presentations and dissertation will be scrutinized by the examiners. All components will carry equal weighting and candidates must achieve a pass in all examinations.

The modular topics have been chosen to run in parallel with the Prosthodontic course and will also provide a good foundation in restorative dentistry. The award-winning staff in the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) are amongst the most experienced in the UK in the fields of human identification, forensic anthropology, craniofacial identification and the study of the human body. The core remit of the Centre is the study of anatomy and staff deliver high quality anatomy teaching at all levels, via whole body dissection which allows students to develop a sound knowledge of the human body.

For a start, it is a course unique to the University of Dundee – there's nowhere else in the UK that offers a stand-alone graduate qualification in internships with this level of personal support and tuition.

How you will be taught

During the initial 4-week Preparation and Planning module, learning and teaching will be based around intensive, face-to-face, highly interactive and participatory lectures, seminars and tutorials.

During your internship, you will make full use of MyDundee, the University's Virtual Learning Environment to enhance and extend your learning. Students on internships based in Scotland will return to university 4 times during the internship to continue your career management development in a collegial environment. Students on internships in China will have regular 'virtual seminars', Skype-chats and online learning tasks to complete. Assessment is by continual assessment; there are no exams for this programme.

Why study at Dundee?

Building on the success of the Joint LLM in International Commercial Law, Dundee Law School has established a partnership with the University of Toulouse to run a joint LLM programme in Comparative and European Private International Law.

This is a topic of increasing practical importance in the era of globalisation - where to litigate, what law should be applied, and when can foreign judgments be recognised. This unique programme will explore the contrasting approaches of the common law and civil law worlds.

In the Spring semester (January-March) students will undertake private international law modules at Dundee, and then over the summer a dissertation.

In September, students will go to Toulouse to undertake a range of private international law modules, all taught through English.

To qualify for the LLM in Corporate & Commercial Law, students must complete at least 2 options which adopt a specifically corporate focus and complete their dissertation on a corporate law topic.

The Corporate modules at Dundee provide students with a detailed understanding of core issues relating to corporate law and allow for specialisation in the fields of corporate governance, as well as in banking and finance.

Principles of Corporate Law provides a strong central core which links to many of the other modules in the programme. This module focuses on the structure and development of company law in the United Kingdom in an international context. It covers the radical re-shaping of company law in the United Kingdom in 2006 which will almost certainly impact on the reform of corporate law in other jurisdictions which have shaped their corporate regimes on earlier UK legislation.

Corporate Governance covers issues relating to the distribution of power within companies and looks at governance regimes across the world. The impact of Enron and Worldcom have made governance issues much more high profile than had previously been the case. Dundee's strength in the field of corporations is equally reflected in the specialised option in Banking and Financial Services.

Alongside the corporate modules, students may select options from the School's broad commercial law portfolio, which includes: Intellectual Property Law; Principles of International E-Commerce, Competition Law and International Taxation Law.
