Program Structure

Students requiring an F1 visa must enroll full-time (12 credits) and study on campus. Students on an F1 visa are permitted to complete no more than one online class each semester. From stem cell research to healthcare reform, these topics involve critical dilemmas at the intersections of law, society, culture, public policy, philosophy, religion, economics, and history.

Scientists, healthcare providers, and policy-makers confront how to approach these complex questions, yet scientific and technological advances have far outpaced our ability to understand or make key decisions about these issues.

Students at the Columbia School of Social Work earn their MSW degrees by completing a progressive sequence of courses designed in accordance with the standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the School’s accrediting body.

All MSW students are required to take courses in human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policy and services, research, social work practice, and field education. At CSSW, students are required to earn a total of 60 credits, along with 1,200 hours in the field.

The majority of our students complete these requirements in two years—or four semesters (fall, spring, fall, spring). They spend two days a week in class and three days a week at their field placements. The Two-Year Program begins with a required Orientation in August and concludes with graduation in May of the second academic year.

Field Education

Field education is a vital part of earning an MSW. It is where students learn how to apply social work theories from the classroom to social work practice.
Field Education Requirements

Each semester, students spend three days a week (21 hours), working at a placement site—one day more than the minimum specified by the Council on Social Work Education. Students must earn 1,200 fieldwork hours to receive the MSW.

During a student’s first (foundational) year, the focus is on generalist social work practice. In the second (advanced practice) year, the focus is on the student’s chosen method area of concentration and field of practice.

The Narrative Medicine master's program seeks to strengthen the overarching goals of medicine, public health, and social justice, as well as the intimate, interpersonal experiences of the clinical encounter. The program fulfills these objectives by educating a leadership corps of health professionals and scholars from the humanities and social sciences who will imbue patient care and professional education with the skills and values of narrative understanding.
Health care and the illness experience are marked by uneasy and costly divides: between those in need who can access care and those who cannot, between health care professionals and patients, and between and among health care professionals themselves. Narrative medicine is an interdisciplinary field that challenges those divisions and seeks to bridge those divides. It addresses the need of patients and caregivers to voice their experience, to be heard and to be valued, and it acknowledges the power of narrative to change the way care is given and received.

Program structure

The Narrative Medicine graduate degree requires 38 points to complete. Those studying full-time can complete the program in one academic year plus the following summer, and for a few students, in one academic year. Students electing to study on a part-time basis can complete the degree in two years. The part-time option is designed to accommodate the professional obligations of students who are employed. This is a rigorous and concentrated program that demands a serious commitment of time and energy. Students are expected to devote significant time to completing reading assignments, class assignments, and term projects outside of class.
Degree requirements include the five Core Courses in Narrative Medicine (22 points) and the Research Methodology course (4 points), which is required for all students who have not taken a graduate-level course in research methodology, with a focus on qualitative research and/or evaluative research. The remaining 12 to 16 points may include any combination of (1) additional Topics in Narrative Medicine courses; (2) elective courses chosen from other departments (up to six points: note that many graduate courses in other departments are three points each); Independent Study (one to four points) and/or (4) a Capstone (two to four points).
The core curriculum of this pioneering M.S. in Narrative Medicine combines intensive exposure to narrative writing and close reading skills, literary and philosophical analysis, and experiential work, with the opportunity to apply this learning in clinical and educational settings. Core courses provide the conceptual grounding for work in narrative medicine, and introduce the direct practice of teaching narrative competence to others. Students combine core curriculum work with more focused study of important and current topics in the field. Focused seminars draw on the resources of more than one discipline. Courses rotate to reflect the current concerns, methodologies, and analytic approaches of narrative scholars and practitioners. To allow students to individualize their professional education in narrative medicine, they may choose electives from among a wide range of offerings at the University, with advice and approval of the faculty adviser. Electives enable students to gain knowledge in academic disciplines they wish to pursue (e.g., medical anthropology) or in subject areas of special professional interest (e.g. aging).The optional Capstone Project offers a wide range of opportunities for supervised or mentored work: a clinical placement, a program development and/or evaluation project, a scholarly thesis, or a writing project. It may combine independent work with a summer intensive workshop, such as the Columbia University Oral History summer workshop or an intensive writing workshop. The requirement can also be satisfied by clinical practicums that may include teaching, witnessing, or serving as a teaching assistant.

The program includes four core courses that ground students in the field. Two additional courses are designed to provide students with a deeper engagement in research and practice. Four electives allow students to focus their work in an area of concentration, such as health care, the environment, or ombuds practice. At least two of these electives must be chosen from courses designed for the program; up to two may be chosen from course offerings in other schools of the University. Three Master's Capstone Thesis Seminars immerse students in the world of negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution through applied research and exposure to professional work in the field with grounding in theory, research and practice.

This is a rigorous and concentrated graduate degree program that demands a serious commitment of time and energy. The Master of Science in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution can be taken on a full or part-time basis, and is designed to accommodate the professional obligations of students who are employed full-time.

Students should be aware of the nontraditional schedule. Classes are mostly held in the evenings and on the weekends. Course meetings are either spread out over the 14-week term or scheduled as weekend, day-long intensives. Course schedules are posted in advance of the term so that students can plan accordingly. Classroom attendance is required. Students are also expected to devote significant time to completing reading and written assignments, and projects outside of class.

Available on either a full-time or part-time basis, the Master of Science in Sports Management program has aligned its curriculum with the needs of the sports industry, with unique offerings in the areas of global sports, digital sports media and marketing, and sports analytics. These areas complement a strong foundation of core courses that equip graduates with the skills and training necessary to maintain an advantage in the highly competitive sports job market and, once hired, add immediate value to sports industry employers. Beyond establishing a strong business foundation, the curriculum and faculty will challenge you to deepen your understanding in three key areas:
The complex global sports landscape and the contrasts and comparisons of the sports business models around the world
The many connection points between the digital world and the sports world and the potential impact of disruptive technologies
The various ways to integrate the abundance of new data and information into decision processes that sports leaders face

Program Structure

The program requires 36 points for degree completion, or 12 3-point courses. For required courses, you will take four core courses that provide an overview of sports business concepts and practices and how they are applied in real-world contexts. In addition, you will choose one required course from each of three categories: Sports Marketing, Sports Analytics, and Sports Projects. For your remaining five courses, you may customize your focus by choosing electives in a variety of disciplines or choose courses from among three elective groupings, or areas of focus:

Internships and Work Opportunities

The internship component provides you with the option to take a deeper dive in a specific topic related to sports or complete an internship where you can learn and expand your network. A full-time internship is required for all full-time students and must be completed by the end of the spring semester. Students can work with our career specialist for guidance in mapping out internships.

Professionals with a qualifying law degree who are interested in broadening their understanding of the global sports industry can now pursue an M.S. in Sports Management and a Master in Global Sports Law together.

Columbia University, a world-class Ivy League institution, and Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE), a Madrid-based leader in legal education, offer a companion degree program for individuals with a law background who are interested in a career in international sports.

Intensive study for the two professional degrees — Columbia’s Master of Science (M.S.) in Sports Management and ISDE’s Master in Global Sports Law — is completed on Columbia’s campus in New York City, the sports capital of North America, for 10 months during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Courses provide foundational instruction on the sports industry combined with specific training in sports (accounting, finance, marketing, personnel management, and analytics) and law (intellectual property law and alternative dispute resolution).

After successfully completing their coursework, students pursue a 3-to-6-month internship with a global sports law firm, agency, team, league, or regulatory body, based on their academic profile and professional goals.

Both degree programs are taught by renowned faculty from Columbia and ISDE who are leaders in the fields of sports law, sports analytics, sports media, as well as professional and collegiate athletics.

Guest lecturers are among the world sporting community’s most respected lawyers, agents, and managers. Networking events and practical workshops held at leading law firms and sports organizations in New York City complement the coursework.

Students in the program have access to the same academic and administrative benefits as other full-time Columbia students and are provided placement services by ISDE. In addition to the academically rigorous curriculum, the program offers students outstanding networking opportunities with peers at Columbia and ISDE, colleagues from across the Ivy League, and industry leaders.

Sustainability issues are being addressed in many industries, nonprofits and governmental agencies and are incorporated broadly into different organizational functions, all with the common goal of creating a sustainable economy, society, and environment.

There is a growing demand for sustainability professionals in a range of sectors, and many lawyers, engineers, marketers, communications professionals, policymakers and scientists now have some form of sustainability responsibility in their positions. The M.S. in Sustainability Management, co-sponsored by The Earth Institute and the School of Professional Studies, addresses the need for formal training and education in sustainability.

To help students fully understand the systematic and organizational role of sustainability in any organization, the program draws upon sophisticated environmental measurement tools, cutting edge environmental science, and world class management and policy studies. It draws also on environmental and sustainable development research, providing practical training to a new generation of professionals who will address critical interdisciplinary issues.

The Master of Science in Technology Management program prepares new professionals and recent graduates with the management skills to lead initiatives and major projects that help organizations manage change brought on by disruptions from technological innovation.
Students learn how to successfully implement new technology and digital transformation to enhance business performance and growth. They will also gain insights to leverage technology as a driver for business process innovation and improvement.
