The Master of Arts (MA) in Marital and Family Therapy (MFT), offered at the Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco campuses of Alliant International University, is designed to meet the growing demand for professional marriage and family therapists.

Improve Lives Immediately
The program commits to producing compassionate practitioners with superior theoretical knowledge and the real-world training to apply it for the improvement of lives, especially in families from multiple cultures and countries. Master’s graduates can begin practicing immediately after licensure or transfer all credits to our Marital and Family Therapy PsyD program.

Students may attend either full-time or part-time to complete the program. The minimum program completion time for full-time students is 2 years. The minimum completion time for part-time students is 3 years. The maximum completion time for all students is 5 years.

Cutting Edge Specialties and a Study Abroad Option
Students in the MFT master’s program have the option to specialize in one of three fields of growing national and international interest and significance:

• Chemical Dependency (San Diego)
• Gerontology (San Diego)
• Infant-Preschooler Mental Health (Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Online)
• Latin American Family Therapy (Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego)
• LGBT Humans Services And Mental Health (Online)

In addition, you can opt to study abroad in Mexico for up to the first three semesters of the program.

Licensure
With a master’s degree in MFT, you are eligible for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California upon completion of post-degree intern hours and passing the licensure exam.

Accreditation
The Couple and Family Therapy MA program at Alliant International University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) at the following locations: Irvine, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco.

Preparing Professional and Couple Family Therapists
Our Couple and Family Therapy programs provide training for a career as a professional marriage and family therapist in the U.S. Students are trained to treat relational mental health issues with individuals, couples, and families from a systemic perspective. Skills are developed in the mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals and relationship systems. The program provides an integrative approach to the major systemic theories and interventions.

The program fulfills all academic requirements for application to the State of California’s examination for a marriage and family therapist license (Section 4980.40 and 4980.41 of Business and Professions Code).

Licensed marriage and family therapists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, social service agencies, churches, the military, educational institutions, and private practice.

Students can specialize in a variety of concentrations while in the master’s program, including chemical dependency, gerontology, Infant-Preschool Mental Health, Latin American family therapy, and LGBT Human Services and Mental Health.

The master's degree program in School Counseling is for candidates who wish to pursue a school counseling career working with children and adolescents in pre-K-12 schools. Embedded with the program is the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential recommendation made to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) that is required for employment as a California school counselor within school districts.

Graduates of Alliant’s School Counseling master’s program will be prepared to work as school counselors in elementary and secondary school settings. School counselors serve as student advocates and counseling support, working with other professionals within the school (teachers, school psychologists, school nurses, etc.) to create positive learning environments that maximize students’ success.

School counselors design and implement counseling programs that help to equip students to better manage emotions and behaviors, make decisions, cope with challenges, prevent and resolve conflicts, overcome learning disorders, and improve attendance. School counselors also assist students in improving self-management skills, and provide guidance toward helping students achieve future goals through appropriate career and academic counseling.

Successful candidates for the School Counseling master's program may have degrees, experience, and backgrounds in a variety of areas, including: counseling, psychology, sociology, education, child development, liberal students, teaching, social work, and more.
