The Interdisciplinary Approaches in Life Sciences (AIV) Master (M.Sc) of Paris Diderot and Descartes universities is an interdisciplinary two- year program tackling quantitative approaches on different interfaces with Life Sciences. It aims at training creative and talented students to develop their research in an environment as enriching as the best world graduate programs. The program is based on learning through research pedagogy – rich with research internships and collaborative projects. The program is funded by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation.

The 1st year of the AIV Master is the first in France to teach systems biology and synthetic biology. The training is focused at the interface of life sciences and physics, mathematics and computer science. Apart from systems and synthetic biology, students discover methods of mathematical modelling, statistical analysis and as well state-of-the-art technologies (fluorescence microscopy, nano-fabrication, molecular forces measurements, etc.) used to quantify the properties of living systems. They also gain skills in scientific communication and may want to participate in external modules to acquire or strengthen a specific knowledge.

During the second year students deepen their knowledge of life sciences, develop their ability to critically analyze scientific works and discover the Research world. The M2 curriculum is devoted to research, through three internships, with at least one theoretical internship and one experimental internship. For those willing to pursue in a PhD program, the last semester will give them the opportunity to prepare a thesis project.

Students can follow the second year from the master’s first year program or apply directly, having fulfilled previously an equivalent of 4 years post-high school education, including at least one internship in a research settings.

Guidelines -

There is a lot of diversity in this Master, but for this to work we have to share several common values and adopt a few rules. Let’s list some of them.

1. Students have priority to express themselves during the class.

2. Discussions should remain at all time argumentative and, needless to say polite. The important point here is that it is not useful to say that you disagree with one idea. What’s useful is to explain why you disagree and if possible to propose your own reflexion and idea on the topic.

3. Be proactive in class. There’s no point for you to attend the Friday sessions if you do not try to participate to the discussion. We know it’s difficult to ask questions, but it is worth trying again and again. As a rule of thumb, if you don’t understand something, just ask !

4. Come prepared. Read the article or the reviews that are being presented several times and earlier than on Friday morning. Participate to the Moodle, engage in discussion before and during the sessions.

5. Be on time and respect deadlines. You have to meet the deadlines so that everyone can prepare before the Friday session. This is true for both the students that will present and for those that will listen to them. Sending a post the day before is not relevant and does not help. If you think you cannot meet the deadlines, let us know as soon as possible.

6. Students have a lot of autonomy, and we encourage a level of independency. This does not mean that you are alone in your study endeavours, teachers can always be contacted in times of need.

7. Respect the work of your fellow students. At several occasion you will have a choice between finishing your experiments in the lab and attending the presentation made by two of your co-students. The priority should be given to the Master. At all times. It’s up to you to organize your schedule so that all Friday afternoons are free. During internships defense, you are all expected to attend at all time, and not only for your talk, which is very disrespectful for your colleagues.

That being said, everything is possible providing that you discuss with us in advance. Also and importantly, we encourage creativity. You can organize events, create or participate to scientific clubs, invite researchers to attend to the Friday sessions or to give a talk, etc… Be involved, share your knowledge and you will spend a very interesting year with us.

Each class is composed of up to thirty students with a high level background in one of the following disciplines: mathematics, physics, computer sciences, chemistry, biology, medicine, cognitive sciences, philosophy, sociology, or history of science.

A cross-cultural, interdisciplinary programme, you spend your first term at our Canterbury campus with full access to its excellent academic and recreational facilities. After a term at our Canterbury campus, you move to Kent’s Paris centre to study modules with a specific focus on this city, allowing you to benefit from the experience of living and studying in another European culture. All classes in Paris are taught in English. The programme can also be studied at Canterbury only.

Comparative Literature involves the study of literature from two or more national and linguistic traditions, allowing students to gain an intercultural and transnational understanding of diverse cultural and literary practices. The MA programme explores three main areas: themes, genres, movements and major literary figures; the interactions and exchanges between national literary traditions; and the theory and practice of comparative literature. These complementary strands encourage comparative analysis in a variety of contexts, ranging from the study of national literatures to the exploration of different genres, periods, media and literary theory.

The programme is offered by the Department of Comparative Literature and benefits from staff expertise in a range of areas, including European modernism, postmodernism, postcolonial literature, literature and medicine, literature and sexuality, literature and psychoanalysis and literature and the visual arts. The International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) degree offers an innovative curriculum giving students a sophisticated understanding of today’s international issues by bridging the various sub-disciplines of this emerging field: human rights, international law and organizations, mediation and conflict transformation, public health issues, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

The coursework provides strong theoretical and analytical foundations and is complemented with hands-on experiences, including travels to key sites of the history of international conflict, and an internship allowing students to gain professional practice while developing a network of useful contacts.

Courses take place at Arcadia University in the United States, in Glenside, in the greater Philadelphia area (Pennsylvania). :Master in Diplomacy and Strategic Negotiation at Université Paris Sud:

- The objective of the Master's program at UPS is to provide students with the necessary practical tools and abilities to develop strategies of negotiation in diplomacy, which can be applied to both the public and the private sector.
- The Master's program at UPS has a dual focus: French and European Diplomacy, and Negotiation.
- The coursework consists of negotiation working groups, occasional guest speakers, and a simulation trip conducted with the participation of an international organization.

:Organization of the Dual Program:

AGS students are accepted into the UPS program if they have fulfilled the two following conditions:

- Being in good academic standing at AGS, with a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
- Having reached an intermediate level of French by admission into the UPS program.

Students in this dual program complete the full M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy curriculum at AGS, and follow additional courses at UPS along with the AGS coursework during two of the four semesters of the program.

- Courses at AGS are taught in English. Courses at UPS are taught in French, though assignments can be written in English.
- The Master's program at UPS lasts one year, and starts in the second or third semester of the AGS Master's program, which allows students to acquire the necessary proficiency in French.
- The coursework at UPS consists of part-time classes scheduled throughout the year in a way that is compatible with the AGS courseload, and an end-of-year simulation trip that usually takes place at the end of April. Additional field trips or other special projects support the program.
- AGS courses are held at AGS, on boulevard Raspail in Paris, and UPS courses are held at the UPS campus in Sceaux, 20 minutes from Paris.

An American M.A. and a European LL.M. in three years

Thanks to a partnership between AGS and the Law School of Université de Cergy-Pontoise in France, students enrolled in the Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy program at AGS may choose a dual-degree option whereby they earn two Master's degrees over the course of three years:

- A U.S.-accredited M.A. (Master of Arts) in International Relations and Diplomacy
- A Europe-accredited LL.M. (Master of Laws) in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics

In addition, students in this program earn a Certificate in Anglo-Saxon Law from AGS.
This dual program takes place entirely in France, in the Paris area. All courses are instructed in English; additional French language and culture courses are offered to non-French speakers.

:Preparatory courses in Law:

In order to be eligible for the LL.M. program, students who do not have a legal background are required to take four preparatory courses while pursuing their M.A. at AGS:

- Introduction to Common Law
- American Tort Law
- American Contract Law
- American Criminal Law

Students who successfully complete the four preparatory courses earn a Certificate in Anglo-Saxon Law from AGS. Near completion of these preparatory courses and the AGS degree, qualified students may apply to the LL.M. program at Cergy (see below for details).


:LL.M. in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics at Université de Cergy Pontoise (UCP):

The LL.M. program is a one-year full time program. Courses are taught in English. They take place in the greater Paris area, on the campus of Université de Cergy-Pontoise, accessible by public transportation (RER) from the center city.

The LL.M. in French & European Union Law and Business Ethics at Université de Cergy-Pontoise provides specialized knowledge in French, European Union and International Law for students preparing to work for or in relation with Intergovernmental Organizations, NGOs, European institutions, and International Corporations.

The faculty in the LL.M. program is composed of both academics and lawyers or other professionals. In some cases, seminars are taught by and within international law firms based in Paris. Through this setting, the program provides its students with a network of contacts among the international legal community in Paris.

In addition to the optional French language courses offered at AGS along with the M.A., students follow a course in French Language and Culture at UCP along with the LL.M. courses in the last year. Steps of the Dual Program

1. In their first two years, students complete the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, as well as - for those who do not already have a legal background - four preparatory Law courses at AGS.

Note: although the application process for the LL.M. part of the dual program does not start until the fourth semester, students are strongly encouraged to express their interest in pursuing this dual option as early on as possible so as to schedule the preparatory Law courses as evenly as possible over the four semesters of the International Relations program.

2. In their fourth semester at AGS, students apply to the LL.M. program at UCP.

Thanks to AGS-UCP partnership, students who do not have a legal background are eligible for this program as long as they successfully complete the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy as well as the four preparatory courses in Law. The EdTech master teaches to research: teaching is based on the questioning and the project of each student. Problem solving, experimentation and interpretation are based on the analysis of the scientific literature.

It introduces the digital industry training: content design, learning strategy, platform design, working in project mode. Internships (laboratory, company or association, in educational institutions), and stakeholders closer student researchers, startupeurs, social entrepreneurs, professors, all education stakeholders.

It meets the needs of experienced teachers or training by inviting them to work the key points of education in the digital society: new responsibilities and new forms of educational intervention, addressing societal and scientific challenges such as “living together “, health, nutrition, mobility, climate, pollution, future cities.

This MA offers an intellectually dynamic introduction to one of the most exciting eras in literary history.

Grounded in and administered from the Centre for Studies in the Long Eighteenth Century, this is an interdisciplinary MA programme that builds upon the expertise and common research interests of 18th-century researchers and teachers across the Faculty of Humanities. The Centre provides an excellent research context for the MA programme and any further postgraduate work that will arise from it.

This programme allows you to spend your first term at our Canterbury campus with full access to its excellent academic and recreational facilities, before relocating to our Paris centre for the spring term.

During your studies in Paris, you are based at Columbia Global Center (known as Reid Hall) in a historic corner of Montparnasse. You participate in the Paris-focused modules, taught in English. In the final term, you complete your MA by writing a 12-15,000-word dissertation on a research topic defined in collaboration with your academic supervisors.

You take two modules in each of the first two terms (three of these four modules are core) and a dissertation in the third.

This twelve-month programme allows students of literature the opportunity to augment their study with visits to some of places that have inspired many of the greatest authors of the last several hundred years.
