Bordeaux is a famous city in the attractive Gironde region of southwest France. Renowned as the centre of one of the world’s premier wine-producing regions, Bordeaux is also an important higher education hub, with many of its institutions offering postgraduate programmes in viniculture and oenology (the science and business of wine production).
Established in the Roman period, Bordeaux grew substantially in the 18th century as its port on the Garonne river made it an excellent centre for trade in various commodities (including the wines that were becoming increasingly popular with international markets).
Today the Bordeaux economy remains closely associated with the wine trade, with the city itself housing the offices and administrative buildings of many merchants and producers.
As one of France’s most famous cities, Bordeaux offers an attractive destination for postgraduate study. The city itself is home to many famous monuments and landmarks, including historic streets, churches and buildings. This has contributed to Bordeaux being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its centre featuring well-preserved structures from several periods.
Beyond Bordeaux city lie what are arguably the world’s most famous vineyards, interspersed with spectacular chateau buildings and pleasant small villages (unfortunately, Bordeaux’s globally renowned wine producers don’t tend to offer a student discount).
The University of Bordeaux can date its origins to 1441, but, following several historical reorganisations, now operates as a consortium of five associated institutions, with different academic focusses. Bordeaux’s other higher education providers include a number of engineering and business schools, most of which provide postgraduate programmes.
As you’d expect, the wine industry is an important part of the local economy in Bordeaux, but the city is also well-known for its expertise in various hi-tech sectors including lasers and aeronautics.
