The Department of Civil & Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield was founded in 1917 and we have a strong research history in fundamental areas such as structures and water. We continue to strive to be the best civil engineering department in the UK by developing and delivering our plans for excellent research and teaching.
We’re well known for our work in structural fire engineering, earthquake engineering, blast engineering, flood prediction and prevention and leakage management. But civil and structural engineering is no longer just about the built environment above and below ground. We have a responsibility and passion to address emerging global engineering challenges, and our growing expertise in resilient infrastructure, sustainability and carbon-neutral construction, energy generation & storage, digital technologies, characterisation of new materials, and managing risk and hazards, means we’re dedicated to making the world a better place and to producing engineers who will build a better future. We’re very pleased to be launching three new postgraduate MSc courses that aim to address these challenges. While they’re unique in their main themes; management, hazards and urban infrastructure, they all share a common emphasis on taking into consideration the Earth’s resources and the design of engineering solutions with the least impact on the environment possible. Students will gain fresh perspectives and advanced methods for solving the toughest global engineering problems we face, including addressing the causes and effects of climate change.
These courses will make you the kind of engineer the world needs right now; forward-thinking, interdisciplinary, environmentally conscious, and capable of the kind of complex thinking our rapidly changing society needs.

This multidisciplinary course combines technical civil engineering expertise with management skills to empower future leaders to sustainably manage complex construction projects. The course is academically rigorous, but deeply rooted in the real environment of the modern construction industry.
How can we make our infrastructure more resilient to natural and man-made hazards? In an age of climate crisis and threats to our safety and security, these global challenges are key concerns for governments, communities and businesses. This course educates engineers to become skilled in providing technical and sustainable solutions to these risk-based challenges, and protect infrastructure and society from a broad range of hazards.
Our lives are becoming increasingly urban, which raises significant challenges for engineers to create healthy, sustainable and secure infrastructure that minimises our impact on the environment. This course will provide you with the tools and techniques needed to analyse and design urban systems and civil infrastructure, in order to address the challenges of engineering liveable environments.
