We've been helping students find the right postgraduate course for over a decade.
From social media trends to mass media coverage and public diplomacy, the way news and current affairs are reported can have a major influence on the way we see the world and how countries influence each other, while setting political agendas in East Asia.
The MA Politics and Media in East Asia is unique in offering students an opportunity to develop a broad understanding of the interweaving of media and politics with a particular focus on East Asia. Students will learn about major political trends in the region, while developing in-depth knowledge about the role media plays in these developments by influencing public opinion and shaping mutual perception of people in the region.
This course offers theoretical and practical training drawing on the interdisciplinary strength in the School of East Asian Studies at The University of Sheffield. Depending on your interests, you can specialise in either politics or media trends, while acquiring essential knowledge about both fields through core modules.
Choose from a range of modules which may include: Contemporary Chinese Society and Media: Media and Public Communication in Japan: The Political Economy of China, and Global Governance and Japan
If you wish to study an East Asian language, we offer flexible, innovative and highly-rated language programmes in Chinese, Japanese and Korean at a variety of levels for non-native speakers. You can take East Asian language modules as part of your optional modules.
Knowledge about both political and media trends in East Asia is highly valuable for careers in the media industry, journalism, consulting, and NGOs, specializing in East Asia and the Pacific region. You will also be an excellent candidate for government posts, including Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Cultural Affairs, Defence, Intelligence, Home Office, and Customs. The course's broad conceptual training will also prepare you for further studies in the doctoral level in the field of politics and media.
