Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
As well as expertise in learning and teaching in biosciences and health sciences, our faculty is also widely recognised for world-class research. In the latest UK research excellence framework (REF 2014) we were rated one of the top eight UK institutions for biosciences, health sciences, psychology and veterinary research. Our research has led to improved understanding and treatment of diabetes, cancer, addiction, cardiovascular and infectious diseases. In addition, we have world-leading research in sleep and chronobiology and systems biology.
This is an exciting time for the Faculty, and the University of Surrey as a whole. As part of the integration of biomedical and health research, the University is playing a leading role in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Academic Health Sciences Network which is set to encourage greater collaboration between academic institutions, the NHS and industry to boost research and innovation in health care.
Our extensive, well-established collaborations with industry and the National Health Service continue to provide knowledge transfer to the commercial sector, clinical practice and the wider community.
Postgraduate study
At postgraduate level, we offer a wide range of programmes including those leading to Diploma, Masters and PhD awards, along with standalone modules as part of continuing professional development. Many of the programmes are applicable to recent graduates and/or health and medical practitioners and industrialists looking to enhance their skills in specialist areas.
PhD students will be registered initially for a probationary period and will proceed to full PhD registration after one year, subject to a successful upgrade viva. Students will be expected to demonstrate original thought and a capacity for critical evaluation. All PhD students will be expected to participate in relevant research training courses. The degree will be awarded upon submission of a thesis and a successful viva voce examination.
Facilities and equipment
The Faculty has a core technology programme, to support and fund equipment-intensive research technologies and to promote their use in multidisciplinary research. It encompasses functional genomics (microarray printing, genomics, transcriptomics), bioinformatics (data mining, systems biology, pathway modelling, fluxomics), proteomics (2D-PAGE, ICAT, MudPit, MALDI-TOF), metabolomics (GC-MS-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS) and imaging (laser scanning confocal, fluorescence, fluorescence inverted and FRET microscopy, flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, in situ hybridisation). In addition, biomedical research is supported by NMR facilities and animal facilities, including dedicated suites for transgenic work.
FHMS also has all of the standard analytical equipment you would expect a biomedical faculty to have to support the subject disciplines. In addition, within FHMS, there is project-specific equipment that is utilised for animal behavioural studies, electrophysiology and molecular biology.
Teaching
The Faculty offers a range of taught postgraduate programmes supported by our excellent research portfolio in a dynamic, friendly environment. Our programmes are recognised worldwide and attract students from every continent. The programmes are highly rated by the Quality Assurance Agency and further endorsed by employers, external examiners and students alike. Many programmes are also accredited by professional bodies and are recognised as part of the professional qualifications requirements.
Research
The Faculty has nine overarching research themes that represent the areas of strength of our research activity. In total the number of academic staff involved in our research exceeds 100, with more than 100 research fellows and over 150 PhD/MD students. Each research theme has an academic coordinator and each contains teams of researchers working in sub-areas of the theme.
We are proud of our record in postgraduate training and we offer a variety of research topics. This all takes place within the context of our Faculty Graduate School (which also serves to create a friendly social environment for our research students.
