The content of the Anthropology programme is focused on developing an understanding of what does it mean to be a human in the world, from a comparative perspective.
Our courses and projects examine issues pertaining to the relativity of world-views as well as specific cultural practices and place them in a global context. This is primarily carried out through analysing ethnographic texts and anthropological films in a seminar setting.
Many of the courses address issues like capitalism, globalisation, anthropological cinema, anthropology of perception, amongst others. All students carry out their own anthropological study in close collaboration with a supervisor.
The Anthropology Programme at Tallinn University offers an MA degree conducted in English. The Audiovisual Ethnography Module allows researchers to produce audiovisual materials as part of their final projects. Researchers interested in pursuing doctoral studies in Anthropology at TLU can do so within the Studies of Cultures programme.
The Anthropology course would be of interest to students that wish to learn more about cultural diversity in a global context. We are also looking for students that are motivated to base their project on participant observation. The knowledge that is produced by our dissertations arises from an empathetic immersion in the social context being studied.
Our approach is inspired by a variety of disciplinary and epistemological approaches. While most of our members of staff come from an Anglo/French tradition in Social Anthropology, the environment at the School of Humanities fosters a transdisciplinary approach which includes Cultural Geography, Philosophy, Semiotics, and Literature Studies.
We are constantly looking for ways to make new connections between disciplines, vocabularies, and concepts that will allow us to render a sophisticated understanding of the faculties of contemporary social life.
The research and teaching of Anthropology at Tallinn University is encouraged and sustained by a cosmopolitan staff; their regional research interests cover the Baltics, Turkey, the Caribbean, India, and Western Europe amongst others.
Our international scope is complemented through our ERASMUS programme, where students are offered the opportunity to study up to one year in another European university. We currently have an expanding number of ERASMUS agreements with European universities and will soon include international universities through the ERASMUS+ programme.
All our graduates have either continued on to either post graduate studies or found employment in the public and private sector.
2-year master's programme provides thorough knowledge and skills in the areas of laboratory and technological measurements, testing and chemical analysis methods, quality systems, metrology and related economic and legal aspects. Studies are carried out in the “Physicum” and “Chemicum” buildings in Tartu – among the top research and education facilities in Northern Europe.
Master's programme in Applied Physics is aimed for those who are interested in innovative engineering in design and application companies. Programme provides interdisciplinary education covering engineering, physics, and math in an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical science and practical engineering. Studies cover a wide spectrum of topics: nanotechnology, quantum topics, solar cells, experimental solid state physics and econophysics. Additionally it is possible to opt for more theoretical projects, such as computer simulation of physical systems, modeling of turbulence and complex systems (e.g. biological or social networks).
The graduates of the programme have skills applicable in a broad sphere, such as engineers or project managers in high-tech startup companies or well-established companies in the field of energy, nanotechnology, data mining, measuring laboratories etc.
The Communication Management programme offers different subjects focusing on diverse paths of communication management. It offers systematic knowledge of modern communication theories, methods and applications. The programme creates opportunities not only to design and manage communication, and not only to solve problems innovatively by using analytical thinking, scientific knowledge and the best international practice, but also to conduct research and find applications for research results in various fields of communication. The international staff members share their experiences and bring students closer to the real experience of jobs.
Different students might be interested in this programme. For example those who desire to become creative thinkers, able to produce innovative solutions in the field of communication management. Covering a wide range of different but interconnected subjects, this programme best suits the needs of those interested in communication, marketing, sociology, intercultural communication and general humanities. Young people who wish to live abroad or to work in community development projects might also find that this programme suits their needs.
Our programme involves more than mere communicating with people. It analyses, in depth, the fundamental role of communication and helps to explain the process of communication. The subjects offered show that there are different perspectives, modes and means of communication. Our programme supports cultural and ethical values; its special focus is on Intercultural Communication, not only dealing with people with diverse cultural backgrounds, but also with people of different ages, genders, social classes etc. The specialisation module includes courses that prepare the individual for leadership in any corporate multinational or transnational organisation through a deep knowledge of the relationship between globalisation, identity, society and culture.
This programme aims to provide students with knowledge and skills in the key aspects of communication, semiconductor, medical and embedded electronics. Students can specialise in either communications electronics (embedded systems, networking, etc.) or cognitive electronics (sensors, sensor networks, medical diagnostics, measurement systems). The programme is supported by the ELIKO Competence Centre and the CEBE Centre of Excellence.
The students also have a chance to take part in significant research projects (e.g. implantable devices for cardiac monitors, sensors and monitors for transplanted organs and tissues, material quality measurement systems, smart home and city systems).
The research and study areas are situated in modern facilities and are equipped with modern computers, software, measurement equipment and tools that provide excellent opportunities for the students to either study or conduct research. All students of the IT-field are offered practical placement and job opportunities in Estonia or abroad already during the studies which provides professional experience in the field.
The programme provides the specialist knowledge and skills needed for a career leading to high-end technical or technology roles in communicative electronics. Possible future work positions include: designer of computer or automation systems and components, designer of electronics, monitoring and communication systems and their components, senior engineer, hardware developer, project manager, software engineer, etc.

The Master’s programme focuses on designing and using complex modern computer systems. As part of the programme, students cover such subjects as innovation and entrepreneurship, hardware systems design and modelling, computer architecture and programming, software project management and databases, to name but a few.

The Department of Computer Engineering received the IBM Faculty Award 2011 and has an excellent partnership with experts from the IBM Development Centre in Germany and the IBM research laboratory in Israel.
The Computer and Systems Engineering Master's programme focuses on the education of designing and using modern complex computer systems. Nowadays computer systems are used more or less everywhere, they are extremely diverse and most of them are "invisible" to users. Such systems include not only traditional PC-s and sophisticated supercomputers, but also computer systems "embedded" into cars and mobile phones, for instance. Most of these computers are interconnected via various wired and wireless networks and do not work in isolation. These embedded systems can be either stand-alone items or an integral part of a larger system and represent the combination of software and hardware designed to perform specific functions.
When studying the Computer and Engineering Systems programme, students are exposed to systems design and modelling, computer architectures and programming, to name few of the topics. Exposure to those topics will position students well for jobs at small, medium and large companies. Their jobs will involve defining, designing and using embedded computer system in areas such as automotive electronics, consumer devices, telecommunications, etc.
The Computer and Systems Engineering programme is supervised by two departments of TUT - Department of Computer Engineering (DCE) and Department of Computer Control (DCC). Students can choose between two of the following specialisations:
Faculty of Information Technology (founded in 1965) trains specialists in the main fields of information and communications technology (ICT) at bachelor, master and doctoral level. High-quality knowledge based teaching and training is based on international research and development activities, and tight cooperation with ICT industry.
There are more than 2100 students annually learning in the faculty, which employs 150 faculty members, lecturers, researchers and engineers.
Graduates find employment as specialists in the design, realisation, application and administration of computerised equipment and systems. Career opportunities are varied: computer and software companies; banks; diagnostic systems in manufacturing, service, medicine; "smart" houses and manufacturing systems; industrial automation; management control and monitoring systems in air, water and ground based transport, etc. Master’s degree holders interested in high-level research work and university staff positions have the opportunity to continue their studies in the PhD programme.

The international Master's programme with three main specialties - Cyber Security, Digital Forensics and Cryptography - provides students with core skills in wide aspects of the security of information systems and specialized skills in the chosen specialization. Students get a unique chance to study under high-level cyber security practitioners from Estonian banks, telecoms, law enforcement, CERT and the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.
The programme is taught jointly by the two largest public universities in Estonia. The Cyber Security and Digital Forensics studies are concentrated in Tallinn, while Cryptography specialization is concentrated in Tartu. Upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a joint degree signed by both universities - Tallinn University of Technology and University of Tartu.
The public focus on the field of cyber security is growing around the world. Estonia is well known for its eagerness to put innovative IT solutions into everyday use. It is a pioneer in electronic identities and electronic voting and enthusiastically adopts mobile technology, online banking and electronic government services. However, with so many e-solutions and such extensive use of the internet, attention also needs to be turned to the security issue.
Digital forensics is a branch of forensic science encompassing the recovery and investigation of material found in digital devices, often in relation to computer crime. The area is becoming critical for both data security and law enforcement and is involved in a complicated interplay between surveillance and counter-surveillance issues.
An emphasis on product and process technology alone is seen as insufficient for business success. Technological competence needs to be combined with a deep understanding of users, the social and cultural context of use, as well as the utilisation of design in the creation of meaningful and sustainable solutions.
The Design and Engineering multi-disciplinary programme is created with the purpose of combining the rigor of technical development and the honing of engineering competence with the creative, inspirational and communicative power of design. Besides the two core study areas of design and engineering, students will get a firm understanding of the contemporary entrepreneurial world.
With a business and entrepreneurship mind-set, the programme is founded upon the synergies and benefits gained through the integration of Art, Design and Science.
Master's Programme in Design and Engineering has been established by two Estonian leading Educational Centers of Excellence: Tallinn University of Technology and Estonian Academy of Arts, in order to meet current demands in cross-disciplinary professionals.
The aim of the curriculum is to combine the basic competences of engineers and designers to develop the framework for a strong interdisciplinary cooperation. During two years of joint studies a firm base in design and engineering theories will be built and a whole set of professional skills of both disciplines will be developed. Digital Learning Games (DLG) is a 2 years international master’s curriculum in the Tallinn University School of Digital Technologies. The main objective is to bring together people with different background, form heterogeneous teams, learn from experts and from each other, and make games.
Since most of the games are created in cooperation, all people with different backgrounds can find a role in the game design and development team. Most of the learning activities are organized as teamwork. Students form smaller groups, take different roles and design game aspects and games from ideas to working prototypes.
During the studies the students receive knowledge about scriptwriting, directing and producing various genres of documentary films. They learn the basics of film language and narratives in documentaries. At Tallinn University it is possible to do that in a multicultural environment together with lecturers and coursemates from different countries. On daily basis our students are able to use a studio complex with modern TV, film and editing equipment.

Estonia’s e-government and the country’s other innovative e-solutions have grown into one of Europe’s success stories of the last decade. Tallinn Tech has taken a leap into the future of e-Governance education. Largely focusing on IT solutions at government level, its interoperability between different faculties in the University is giving fundamental background also in other aspects (law, public management and economics) of government. The program is especially important due to the reason that it is unique in Estonia and in Europe and the demand for the specialist with broad knowledge on e-governance is increasing tremendously.
The Master’s programme in e-Governance Technologies and Services is giving students broad knowledge about the makings of a modern state – the transition into e-governance, its management and development. Studies include a wider overview of administrative and legal aspects of e-governance.
The curriculum will help to prepare managers and specialists responsible for the development of e-Governance, who are able to comprehend the business processes and the management of public administration; and are familiar with the information systems and software development.
