Why this course?

The MSc in environmental health sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:
- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution
- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption
- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health
- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

This course also provides an emphasis on teaching subjects that are relevant to contemporary problems faced by communities, government, industry and commercial organisations.

For example, professionals from outside Strathclyde work together with academic staff and students in the teaching of case studies of outbreaks of water-borne and food-borne diseases and also in urban and industrial air quality management.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Facilities

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:
- marine and freshwater quality
- air quality
- solid and hazardous wastes
- environmental microbiology

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. A brief profile of some members of the academic team is provided below:
- Dr Iain Beverland is the programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Dr Tracy Morse, a graduate from the BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme, was a recent winner of the title Strathclyder of the Year. Dr Morse won the title for her outstanding work as Project Manager of the University's Scotland Chikwawa Health Initiative. This is a scheme funded by the Scottish Government to improve maternal health and drive down infant mortality rates in four villages in Southern Malawi. Dr Morse is the Malawi-based coordinator of all the activities of the University's Malawi Millennium Project.

The Strathclyde LLM in Climate Change Law & Policy will provide you with a timely qualification and highly specialised knowledge in an ever-growing field of law and policy.

The course is taught through a combination of two residential sessions at New Lanark Mill Hotel and at the University campus in Glasgow city centre.

The flexibility of the course allows you to undertake this exciting programme within one to three years while continuing with your current professional role.

It's a useful qualification for anyone working in areas such as government, international organisations, law firms and consultancies, the banking and insurance sector, electric utilities, and research, educational and advocacy organisations. It also provides an excellent opportunity for recent graduates in law and other relevant disciplines to start out your career in an exciting growth area.

Expert teaching staff

The LLM is delivered by leading experts in the field of climate change law and policy coming from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. They'll provide you with practical insights and inside knowledge.

Venues

The first residential session will take place at the New Lanark Mill Hotel in New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located not far from Glasgow and Edinburgh. The second residential session will take place in Glasgow in the University's Technology and Innovation Centre. LLM candidates will be hosted in a nearby hotel, within walking distance of the Centre.

We believe that these venues will provide the perfect mix. A secluded environment during the first residential session will enable the group on the programme to get to know each oher. During the second session, participants will have the chance to experience the University and get to know the city.

Our students

The current cohort is made up of professionals from across the globe currently working in roles such as an administrative law judge, research associates and senior partner in law firms.

Learning & teaching

The LLM is delivered through a combination of distance learning using the University’s virtual learning environment and two compulsory weeks of seminar-based learning.

Each module can also be taken as a specialised course.

- September
You’ll attend an intensive one-week long (Monday to Saturday) residential session where you’ll follow two core modules:
- Climate Change & International Law
- Comparative Climate Change Law

- September to December
You’ll work from home on the assignments for the two above-mentioned modules and on a third core module - Research Methods & Skills.

- January
You’ll attend a second intensive one-week long residential session where you’ll follow two elective modules from:
- Equity & Adaptation or Carbon Markets & Climate Finance
- Forests, Land Use & Climate Change or Sustainable Energy Governance

- January to May
You’ll follow a third module chosen between Climate Change & Litigation and Climate Law & the Global Economy. Both are delivered entirely online. You’ll also work from home on the assignments for the two above-mentioned elective modules and the third online elective module.

- May to September
You’ll work on a dissertation, provided you’ve passed the necessary credits.

- October
If you’ve accrued the necessary amount of credits, you’ll be awarded the LLM in Climate Change Law & Policy.

Assessment

The course will be assessed mainly by written assignments.

Entry requirements

For the Strathclyde LLM in Climate Change Law and Policy we're in a position to waiver the official University post-graduate English language proficiency requirements. If you do not have a IELTS certificate, we will gauge your level of English on an ad-hoc basis in order to determine whether your level of English is sufficient. Since participating on the Strathclyde LLM in Climate Change Law and Policy does not require students to stay in the UK permanently, participants will be required to gain a visitor’s Visa, and not a student Visa (Tier 4).

Understanding the development and functioning of environmental law across different levels of environmental governance is an important issue of our time. This requires moving beyond the traditional approach to teaching international, regional, EU and national environmental law in isolation from one other.

There's also a growing need to understand the relevance for environmental governance of the legal practices of indigenous peoples and local communities, business entities, local administrations, and transnational environmental practitioners.

The programme aims to help students critically appraise and creatively contribute to environmental regulation and governance at the international, transnational, national and local levels.

Studying this course, you'll be equipped with a wide range of expertise in environmental law, in areas like:

Learning & teaching

The course will be taught primarily through face-to-face sessions in the form of weekly interactive seminars. Seminars give you the chance to make sure you've fully understood the subject matter, but also to develop and discuss ideas with your peers, and to develop specific research interests.

You'll be expected to draw on the knowledge and skills you've developed in your undergraduate studies, as well as on other professional or academic experience you've acquired since then, and share them with fellow course participants.

In addition to taught seminars, you'll benefit from a wide-range of activities organised by the Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law & Governance to allow you to broaden your knowledge of and skills in environmental law and policy.

Assessment

Assessment is based on your performance in coursework and/or written exam papers. Students seeking award of the Master’s Degree (LLM) will need to complete a dissertation. Some of the assessments will be based on real-life assignments that the teaching staff have engaged with in the context of their practical experience in international consultancies, with a view to developing your skills of immediate relevance to global employers.
