Overview

Both Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Management are increasingly important for a wide range of organisations. This specialist Masters provides the practical research skills and management background for you to work in these areas.

You'll examine theory, evidence and practice in CSR as well as the governance, assessment and practical resolution of environmental problems. You will combine the study of scientific, legal, policy and risks associated with sustainability with accounting, ethical and organisation aspects of business.

Course Content

You'll look at the globalisation of business and the transnational nature of the environmental problems faced by business, regulators and policy makers. You will be introduced to the major challenges faced by decision makers when implementing Corporate Social Responsibility policies in the real world and you'll examine the consultancies helping organisations achieve their CSR objectives.

You will be trained in suitable research methods and relevant ethical and legal issues while practising your research skills with independent projects. By the end of the course you'll have developed the essential skills associated with business and financial management and managing sustainable organisations, as well as experience in environmental assessment and maximising ethical governance in organisations.

Modules
For the Masters you will need to take 100 credits of taught modules alongside a dissertation worth 80 credits. There are five core modules, amounting to 60 of your 100 required credits:
-Corporate and Social Responsibility (20 credits)
-Business and the Environment (10 credits)
-Environmental Impact Assessment (10 credits)
-Qualitative Methods (10 credits)
-Quantitative Methods (10 credits)

You'll also choose 40 credits from a range of optional modules:
-Business Information Systems (10 credits)
-Financial Management (10 credits)
-Social and Environmental Accounting (20 credits)
-International Political Economy of Business (20 credits)
-Ethical Marketing and Sustainability (20 credits)

You'll also complete an 8,000 word dissertation, worth 80 credits, as part of the MSc. Your independent research can cover any aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility and/or Environmental Management covered by the syllabus.

The dissertation will allow you to demonstrate your skills in research and apply insights from the taught modules.

Course Content

The MSc is a one year full time course consisting of taught material and a substantial research project. Teaching is delivered by academic experts within the Department of Chemistry as well as external experts from other academic institutions and industry. The Teaching component of the course is delivered via a mix of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical work. You will learn about the key principles of green chemistry and the importance of sustainable technology in a variety of areas. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills.

Assessment methods include a closed examination, written assignments, presentations, posters and practical work.

The MSc course has been running for over ten years over which time there has been a large increase in the range of nationalities represented. The content of the course is globally relevant and so attracts applications from around the world from people keen to develop their own knowledge to pass on when they return to their home country. Research Project

A key part of the MSc in Green Chemistry is the research project. The whole course is 180 credits and the research project accounts for 100 of these so is a very significant part of the programme.

Students are able to choose from a range of project areas in order to carry out research in their area of interest. Projects will be supervised by an academic member of staff, and may also involve collaboration with industry. Projects are chosen in the early stages of the course and you will be allocated to a PAG - Project Area Group - that corresponds with larger research projects that are currently taking place within the Green Chemistry Centre.

Projects can vary each year, but examples of recent MSc students' research includes:
-Production of natural flavours and fragrances using biocatalysis in scCO2
-Clean synthetic strategies for production of pharmaceuticals
-Extraction and utilisation of high value chemicals from food waste
-Starbon technology for catalysis
-Microwave assisted pyrolysis of wood pellets
-Bio-derived platform molecules

The research project module is assessed by a substantial written report by each student, a PAG report and an oral presentation on your individual research.

You'll develop the skills needed by today's environmental managers, policymakers and scientists to tackle environmental issues at local, regional and global levels. You'll be prepared for a wide range of careers across the public and private sectors. This Masters also provides a good basis for further study at PhD level.

The core modules will provide you with knowledge in Environmental Economics and a appreciation of the challenges to which economic analysis can be applied. You'll also be equipped to incorporate environmental feedback into economic decision making in a way that satisfies both ecological managers and economists.

This Masters is suitable for students from a wide range of backgrounds, including economics, human geography, business, sociology, politics, environmental science and more. You'll be taught by a range of interdisciplinary staff with varied Environmental research interests.

The relationships between coastal and marine ecosystems and human activity make for fascinating study.

With a worldwide consensus that the marine environment needs better management there is a growing demand for people who have been trained in marine resource management. This MSc will equip you to work for a wide range of marine environmental organisations or to progress to a PhD.

Course Content

Our MSc in Marine Environmental Management provides exceptional teaching across a range of marine management modules. You'll be introduced to different marine ecosystems, key species and the impact of humans, now and in the past.

You'll get a chance to examine contemporary marine issues, including:
-Problems associated with fishing including: over-fishing, bycatch, habitat destruction and illegal fishing
-Aquaculture
-How a multitude of human activities affect marine ecosystems
-Marine protected areas.

You'll undertake two research dissertations: one based in York, the other with an external organization.

You'll develop knowledge, critical analysis and skills in Environmental Science, and learn about its application to the management of natural resources. You will be prepared for a wide range of careers in environmental consultancy and business, in government and non-governmental organisations and in environmental research.

You'll take part in problem solving especially in issues that are at the forefront of our research. You will also examine case-studies that allow you to analyse and tackle the complex problems that characterise Environmental Management.

You can pick from a variety of optional modules that will allow you to structure this course to your own interests. You'll also be able to chose to do your dissertation work within our department, with the Stockholm Environmental Institute at York (SEIY) or with another appropriate institution or organisation.

The Environment Department offers an MSc by Research degree, where students follow an approved programme of research supervised by a member of academic staff. The thesis is assessed solely on the basis of that research by two individually appointed examiners. An MSc by Research normally takes 1 year to complete.
