This programme is designed specifically for experienced language teachers – with more than a year’s language teaching experience – wishing to build on their skills and experience by following a pedagogically-oriented programme of study. 

Course details

You will study four core modules [full descriptions available below]:

  • Describing Language
  • Social and Psychological Aspects of Language
  • Syllabus and Materials Design 
  • Research Methods in Applied Linguistics

You will also choose three optional modules from a wide range.

In addition, there are two non-assessed components in the programme:

  • During the autumn term, all students will be offered preliminary training in corpus linguistics, introducing you to one or more of the main English language corpora (e.g. the British National Corpus) – invaluable collections of authentic language data against which theory, intuition and pedagogic materials can be measured.
  • You will also be offered a course in Academic Writing. Those whose first language is not English are particularly encouraged to follow this course.

Assessment

You will do a total of six assessed pieces of coursework over the year. For assessment purposes, one of the modules you take during the spring term will be ‘linked’ with the Research Methods module – that is, you will produce a piece of work in the field covered by that module, but with a particular focus on research methods, and this will count as your assignment for Research Methods in Applied Linguistics.

You will also complete a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic of your choice.

Learning and teaching

Modules are typically delivered via weekly two-hour seminars. You will also receive one-to-one support you in the development of your dissertation.

Course details

The dynamism of Shakespeare studies owes much to the sheer diversity of critical, theatrical, and historical approaches.

It offers sustained study in a variety of fields, drawing on the special interests of a dedicated team of Shakespeare scholars. 

You will study four core modules: 

  • Plays and Poems of Shakespeare A
  • Plays and Poems of Shakespeare B
  • Textual Studies in Shakespeare
  • Research Skills in Shakespeare

You will also take one module in performance studies, chosen from the following: 

  • History of Shakespeare in Performance
  • Shakespeare and Early Modern Playhouse Culture
  • Shakespeare and Theatre Practice
  • Shakespeare's Legacy

You will also attend Thursday Seminars held once a week during term-time at the Shakespeare Institute which feature papers presented by a range of established visiting scholars as well as fellows of the Shakespeare Institute and other University of Birmingham academic staff. 

Assessment

Each module is assessed by written assignment with the exception of the optional module in Shakespeare and Theatre Practice, which is assessed by either two performance assignments and a 2,000-word research paper, or by one 4,000-word research paper.

You will also submit a 15,000-word dissertation at the end of the programme. The dissertation will focus on a relevant topic of your choice, agreed with the programme convenor earlier in the year.

Full-time students attend formal seminars totalling 5-8 hours per week.

In addition, all students are expected to attend the weekly Thursday Seminar for all Institute members. Please note that this programme is only available on campus, and cannot be studied by distance learning.

The Shakespeare Institute's MA in Shakespeare and Education is a unique, modular programme that is particularly appropriate for practicing teachers, offering the opportunity to enhance expertise in different aspects of Shakespeare’s work. Throughout the programme you will be incorporating the study of Shakespeare's plays in performance and adaptation. You can study this programme on-site at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon or by distance learning.

Course details

This programme offers you the opportunity to enhance your expertise in different aspects of Shakespeare's work, while maintaining a pedagogical focus. 

You will study three core modules:

  • Shakespeare and Pedagogy
  • Shakespeare’s Theatre
  • Research Skills

You will also choose three optional modules (see module information below). 

The flexible structure of this course allows study in a wide variety of ways, on a full- or part-time basis. Modules are available to study through a variety of routes that may include:

  • Three long weekends at the Shakespeare Institute at approximately monthly intervals
  • One day a week throughout a semester at the Shakespeare Institute (ten days)
  • Distance-learning option via online study
  • One intensive week for the Shakespeare and Pedagogy module, delivered before the Easter holidays.

Full-time study is on site in Stratford-upon-Avon and part-time students can choose to study the whole programme either on-site, primarily by online distance learning or a combination of the two. The schedule of delivery allows access to all modules through a range of modes over any three-year period, although some are not available to study via distance learning. The compulsory Pedagogy module, which is co-taught with the Royal Shakespeare Company, must be studied on-site due to its interactive nature.

However, you will need to come to Stratford-upon-Avon for a one-week residential school in the spring in order to complete your core module on Shakespeare and Education, which is scheduled to coincide with the Easter holidays.

Although self-study is central to doing a programme by distance learning, support is always available. 

You will have a personal tutor and dissertation supervisor to guide you and answer any questions, and you have access to a wide range of online resources too. This comprehensive and focused programme offers you world-class training in the study of medieval English and related literatures.

We specialise in a variety of areas of Old and Middle English literature, ranging from the Anglo-Saxon period to the sixteenth century - and even beyond as we consider the continuing influence medieval texts have on contemporary literature, television and film.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with tutors who have strong reputations as established researchers in a wide range of areas, including manuscript studies and book history, romance, prophecy, the reception of medieval literature, regionality and epigraphy, as well as literature from Wales and Scotland.

Course details

As part of the MRes Medieval Literature you are required to take the following modules:

  • Medieval Biographical Studies
  • Meeting Medieval Manuscripts
  • Understanding Medieval Literature

These modules then provide the framework for a 20,000-word thesis to complete the programme.

Learning and teaching

The MRes Medieval Literature is homed in the Department of English.

Within the Department there is a Medieval English research cluster which offers support to students working in the area, as well as undertaking exciting projects investigating the cultural and material contexts of texts and thus providing a dynamic environment in which research can flourish. 

You’ll also benefit from the Centre for the Study of the Middle Ages (CeSMA) which facilitates academic research into the Middle Ages, from c.300 to c.1500 AD. The programme has an excellent and proven track record. It is rigorous and challenging, forming an excellent preparation for a successful career in teaching English. A bursary of £15,000 is also currently available for those with a 1st/PhD, ar 2:1 or 2.2 degree (2018).

At the University of Birmingham we believe we should provide student teachers with the highest level of teacher education as possible, and this is why we offer a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDipEd) rather than a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Both qualifications lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but the PGDipEd also offers the equivalent of 120 credits at Master’s level (out of 180), which makes it a highly rewarding course by combining both theory and practice.

Following satisfactory completion of this course, plus a successful induction year in school and references, you can return to complete an MA in Teaching Studies (data collection and a 15,000 word dissertation). Additionally, the School also offers a number of specialised Professional Development programmes which will enable you to further develop your career.

Learning and teaching

Course Structure

A variety of teaching styles and approaches to learning are used in the presentation of the themes. These include University-based lectures, small group seminars and workshops, school-based work with pupils and teachers, and work undertaken individually or with other groups of students.

The course includes the following areas of study: 

  • Subject-based teaching methods 
  • School-based work 
  • Whole-school issues

Subject-based teaching methods

You follow your specialist programme, working with your tutor and with peers in your subject, during University days which make up 12 weeks in total across the year. Assessment is based on coursework undertaken during the year.  

School-based work  

School-based work is an important part of the programme, with students normally spending a total of 24 weeks in schools. During the programme you benefit from both carefully supported introductory work in different schools and the experience of spending a significant length of time in two schools.

The final assessment of teaching is based on the spring/summer term school placement. Assessment is shared between University tutors, staff responsible for students in schools, and external examiners. All aspects of your contribution to the life of the school are taken into account, in particular the teaching of your main subject.

During the course supervised experience and practice are arranged in schools of various kinds across the 11–18 age range. We are fortunate in being able to work with a wide range of partnership schools, including mixed comprehensives, single-sex schools, sixth-form colleges and our own University Training School (http://www.uobschool.org.uk). Many of the schools offer opportunities to work with pupils from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.   

Whole-school issues

This area of study is concerned with aspects of education that are of importance to all intending teachers, irrespective of their particular teaching subjects. It is designed to provide you with a breadth of awareness, depth of insight and development of skills through a range of themes studied by all students. Themes currently include Managing Inclusion, Monitoring and Assessment, and Pastoral Care and Citizenship.  

Tutoring and support

You will personally be allocated an English university tutor who will guide and support you throughout your PGDipEd (QTS), along with a dedicated school mentor when on placements.

Progression

Once you have completed your PGDipEd (QTS) and successfully passed your induction year you may return to study with us on a part-time basis to complete a 60 credit dissertation and obtain an MA in Teaching Studies.

Employability

The University of Birmingham English PGDipEd (QTS) course is highly regarded across Birmingham and the West Midlands. We have an excellent record of students gaining jobs at the end of the course. For 2013-2014 the employabilty rate was 100% and all graduates obtained employment in a teaching role. Many of our ex-students have gone on to become Heads of Departments, Senior Managers, advisers and University tutors.

We are delighted to announce that the School of Education will be offering the PGCE in Secondary English Education at the University of Birmingham’s Dubai campus, which will open this autumn. The School of Education at the University of Birmingham has a long-standing reputation as a centre of excellence for teaching and research in a wide range of areas of educational practice and policy. In the 2017 QS World Rankings, it was ranked 25th in the World and joint 6th in Europe.

Staff within the School of Education have been working closely with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which is responsible for the growth and quality of education, on the development of this high-quality training programme which leads to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at secondary level. 

The programme is based on both the UK and UAE standards. School-based experiences are a central part of this programme which also features a range of professional courses to help you plan, teach, and develop your classroom skills. The high quality personalised support, ensures that the majority of our students exceed the teachers' standards at an outstanding level (Ofsted report 2013).  

The School of Education’s well established and renowned programmes in teacher education are due to commence in September 2018 at the Dubai campus. Applications for these courses will open in September 2017. This one year full-time teacher training programme will prepare you for entry into the teaching profession as a reflective and critically aware practitioner. It does this through a significant emphasis on research-led teacher education which will include key elements delivered by staff from the University of Birmingham in Dubai supported by senior teachers in schools.

The programme, which has been approved by KHDA, will support the Ministry of Education's aim of enhancing the status of teachers in the UAE and provide opportunities to share the School’s high quality provision internationally.

Course details

Designed for those who want to teach pupils aged 11-18, the Secondary English Education programme is a full time one year programme with some of this time being spent in placement schools. It includes study around teaching methods, school-based work and whole-school issues. This course is designed to enable students to become reflective, confident practitioners, as well as offering a strong conceptual framework about education, children, English and classroom teaching.

The programme is designed to meet recognised teacher standards in the UAE and UK and time is spent in placement schools to develop the necessary experience and skills. All key areas of teaching English will be covered, including speaking and listening, reading, writing, grammar, media and drama. Whole school issues such as equal opportunities, catering for Special Educational Needs and assessment of learning in English feed through the main subject course. 

During school placements students will apply what they have learnt and continue learning through observing experienced teachers, team teaching with peers and teachers, and supported solo teaching within classes. As the course progresses, students will develop increasing confidence and expertise in selecting from a repertoire of learning activities that are supported by appropriate use of resources and technology.
