This course offers students a grounding in modelling, simulation and optimisation for the process industries, while helping them to strengthen their understanding of chemical engineering. Students take a minimum of four systems engineering modules, six "free" modules (up to two management courses), follow the professional skills workshops and join the Process Systems Engineering research focus area for a year-long research project. This course is ideal for students wishing to become fluent in the use of techniques and tools for computer-aided decision-making.

The programme aims to:
• produce graduates equipped to pursue careers in Process Systems Engineering, in industry, the public sector and non-governmental organisations, or to enter Ph.D. programmes;
• provide the basis for the understanding of the development and key achievements of the major areas of Process Systems Engineering and in Chemical Engineering topics of interest;
• develop an understanding of how this knowledge may be applied in practice in an economic and environmentally friendly fashion;
• foster the acquisition and implementation of broad research and analytical skills both general and related to Process Systems Engineering;
• attract highly motivated students, both from within the UK and from overseas;
• develop new areas of teaching in response to the advance of scholarship and the needs of vocational training;
• offer students with industrial experience the possibility to gain a deeper fundamental grounding.

The Department offers an MSc course with four separate streams:

Biomedical Engineering with Medical Physics

Biomedical Engineering with Biomechanics

Biomedical Engineering with Neurotechnology

Biomedical Engineering with Biomaterials

The Medical Physics stream trains graduates in the physical understanding required for healthcare and medical research, focusing on human physiology, and the use of radiation in treatment and in clinical imaging (especially MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and optical techniques), as well as the signal and image processing methods needed for the design and optimal use of such systems in diagnosis and research.

The Biomechanics stream is focused on bioengineering problems related to major diseases associated with an ageing population, such as cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, and bone and joint disease (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis).

These are major causes of mortality and morbidity, and this stream prepares engineers for a career in these key growth areas.

The Neurotechnology stream covers the development of new technology for the investigation of brain function, focusing on the application of this to benefit society—for example the development of neuroprosthetic devices, new neuroimaging techniques, and developing drugs and robotic assistive devices for those with central nervous system disorders, as well as in biologically-inspired control engineering.

The Biomaterials stream is offered jointly with the Department of Materials.

It addresses the selection and use of biomaterialsin medical and surgical devices, including their application, properties, interaction with tissues and drawbacks. Existing and new biomaterials are studied, including bioactive and biodegradable materials, implants and dental materials.

Modules also cover the development of materials for new applications, the response of cells and the design of materials as scaffolds for tissue engineering, which involves tailoring materials so that they guide stem cells to produce new tissue.

You will be required to choose your stream at the time of application. All four streams lead to the award of the MSc in Biomedical Engineering. The Medical Physics and Biomechanics streams are accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).

The course is full-time for one calendar year, starting in October. It currently has an annual intake of about 60 students.

This course offers students an understanding of the physico-chemical phenomena that affect the behaviour of structured products, such as creams, pastes, etc. It also provides an introduction to experimental and modelling techniques that allow the study of such systems. Students take a minimum of four structured product engineering courses (see list overleaf), six “free” modules (up to two management courses), follow the professional skills workshops and join the Complex Materials research focus area for a year-long research project. This course is ideal for students interested in gaining a better view of the interplay between materials and processing.

The MSc course provides students with a knowledge and understanding of the ‘state-of-the-art’ in one or more of the many areas of mechanical engineering in which the Department has acknowledged expertise.

This combines with the potential for students to develop their abilities in subjects such as numerical analysis and signal processing, which are useful in all areas of mechanical engineering and are associated with the application of computers in engineering practice.

The principal component of the course is the individual project, which is usually associated with current research activity or industrial consultancy, allowing you to gain substantial expertise in one particular area.

Further expertise is developed by taking taught course modules. Students can study an unusually broad range of subjects in the Department as a result of our position as one of the largest university engineering departments in the UK.

The success of the course can be measured by the large proportion of graduates who go on to find appropriate and challenging posts in industry, government, and universities at home and abroad.

It is suitable for applicants who wish to enhance their engineering training or to convert to an advanced engineering discipline from backgrounds in mathematics, physics or computer science.

You will develop specialist skills that are attractive to a broad spectrum of both aerospace and non-aerospace engineering industries.

Through links with industry, it is possible for projects to be supervised in part by staff from industry or to be carried out in industry.
