If your goal is to make the most out of your degree in special education, the MEd in Special Education and Special Education certificate is perfect for you. In addition to learning how to create curricula to meet individual needs of students with disabilities, IUP enables you to pursue your Special Education certificate at the same time. This leads to Commonwealth of Pennsylvania certification in Special Education-all while you earn your MEd in Exceptional Persons.

In addition to offering this track in a flexible, hybrid format, both in-class and online, IUP also offers two other tracks: the MEd in Special Education, or the Special Education Certification Only track.

AS A STUDENT YOU WILL

-Learn from a mix of classes and teaching field experiences designated by Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements.
-Choose between a thesis and non-thesis option.
-Select your electives working in conjunction with your advisor.
-Complete a comprehensive examination as your terminal experience in the course.

If you currently hold teaching certification and are seeking additional certification in special education, you will develop a program of study based upon your past coursework. You will be required to demonstrate competency in teaching methods, child development, and any other area of deficiency noted by the graduate program faculty.

Whether you are a recent grad looking to become a health and physical education teacher, or a current educator who wants to broaden your knowledge base in the field of physical education, the M.Ed. in Health and Physical Education at IUP is perfect for you.

Our curriculum is structured specifically to qualify you as a certified health or physical educator. Classes are designed to inform you about contemporary trends in teacher education, including the incorporation of technology into the classroom. Also, our hybrid option means you only have to be on campus during the summer, taking online classes in Fall and Spring while still completing your degree (including student teaching) in as little as 18 months.

WHO SHOULD EARN A HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION MED?

Our program is designed to serve the need of a variety of populations:
-Recent graduates in any major who wish to become certified health and physical educators.
-Current physical educators looking to broaden their knowledge base and enhance their teaching skills in the subject.
-Teachers in any subject area looking to diversify their skill set and add the health and physical education certification.

Thanks to our hybrid option, you can take classes from the comfort of your own home during spring and fall, only visiting campus during summer break. At the same time, all of our classes include on-campus options that cater to full-time students.

PROGRAM FORMAT OPTIONS

You may tailor the Master in Education program to meet your needs by choosing one of the options listed below:

-Customary Cohort Approach: Once students are accepted to the program, they matriculate through it by taking a six-credit hour course each semester with the same cohort of students. Students who complete all course requirements graduate in two years.

-Flexible Approach: Once students are accepted to the program, they matriculate through it at their own pace by taking courses with different cohorts, each semester, in a sequence and location (Indiana or Monroeville) of their choice. Coursework must be completed over a period of five years. Students who take two courses a semester could complete the program in one year. Please note that this option is not currently available.

-Needs-Based Approach: Acceptance to the Master in Education program is not required. Students may take one or more six-credit-hour MEDU courses to meet their professional development needs or the requirements of other programs.

We offer this program 100 percent online so you can align your professional advancement with your life and career.

It’s rare that students in our Master of Arts in Adult and Community Education program have time for classes during the day. Our students are nurses, police officers, community organizers, corporate managers, engineers, technicians, and human resource professionals. Though from many fields, they’re alike in one way: They're busy people who want to expand their career opportunities.

That’s why we offer this two-year program online so you can keep your job while you develop your teaching and training skills.

You’ll be part of a cohort, and courses are designed to promote a high degree of interaction with your professor and fellow students. In addition, you’ll have the time and guidance to make sure you develop your unique set of skills that will help further your individual career goals.

The IUP Master of Arts in Adult and Community Education is the oldest program of its kind in the United States.

-Complete the program part-time in two years by taking two courses per semester for six semesters.

You'll develop a “learning contract” which is approved by a faculty advisor and a supervisor at the internship site. You'll be able to complete the internship without its interfering with your current employment.

The MA in Student Affairs in Higher Education program represents what a well-rounded academic program is all about—academic excellence, plus geographical, cultural, and ethnic diversity. Coursework and assistantships—held by about 90 percent of our students—blend academic achievement with real-world responsibilities so that you are fully prepared for entry-level and mid-management jobs, depending on your past experience.

STUDENTS FROM A VARIETY OF PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDS

A typical SAHE entering class includes graduates of private and public institutions, from very small to very large, from all sections of the country. Many students are returning to graduate school after having worked for a few years.

YOUR COHORT BECOMES PART OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

All students join a fall cohort and either begin classes in the summer or in fall. With the cohort model you surround yourself with like-minded learners who will become members of your professional network. You progress through a prescribed sequence of courses as a group, and, together, you’ll discover the history of your profession while mastering the theories and techniques that have proven effective when working with diverse campus populations.

THE MA IN STUDENT AFFAIRS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This program introduces you to the key principles and responsibilities of this area of study. Practical experiences provided by your assistantship and practicums help transition you from the classroom to your first job in the field.

A minimum of 42 credits (36 required and 6 credits of elective or thesis), a portfolio requirement, and the equivalent of two academic years of full-time study are required to earn the Master of Arts degree.

Student Affairs is an applied science field and, as such, you will:
-Understand theories of personality and human development.
-Learn elements of research.
-Acquire specific skills and techniques for helping others learn, grow, and develop.
-Comprehend organizational management theory and practice.
-Complete a variety of practice-oriented courses.

You will also demonstrate professional competence by writing either a thesis or completing six hours of approved electives along with a final semester portfolio completed during the final semester.

MED PREPARES YOU FOR BOTH ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS

A series of counseling skills courses, including practicums at the elementary school and secondary school levels, will give you a strong preparation for pre-K-12 commonwealth certification. You'll also complete a 600-hour field experience under the supervision of a certified school counselor.

The hallmark of this program is its philosophy based on the developmental approach to school counseling. Children and youth learn best when they are given the opportunity to increase self-awareness and develop those life skills that contribute to an understanding and utilization of self in all life experiences.

This approach to counseling is sequential and flexible, involves all school personnel, helps students learn more effectively and efficiently, and is managed by a trained counselor who provides specialized counseling services and interventions.

The program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

THE MED PROGRAM WILL PREPARE YOU TO

-Work in both public and private schools with in-depth clinical experience in individual and group counseling.
-Guide students from kindergarten through high school who experience mental health issues.
-Master individual and group counseling methods that allow you to have a lasting positive impact on growing minds and hearts.
-Expand your options to consider college admissions counseling, career counseling, private practice, and consulting.
-Pursue a doctoral degree in counselor education, school psychology, or counseling psychology.
-Be a part of an occupation that is projected to have an “average” job growth through 2022 and a median annual salary of $51,300 in Pennsylvania.

While teaching experience is not a prerequisite for school counseling certification in Pennsylvania, students are expected to possess an understanding of educational philosophy and child or adolescent growth and development. They should also understand the basic principles of psychology, sociology, and learning theory in addition to courses specific to either a child or adolescent population.

Prospective students for the Master of Education and school certification program must meet departmental admissions requirements and procedures in addition to those of the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Applicants are required to attend an admission workshop as the final step in the admissions process. Workshops are held two times a year, and applicants should contact the department to obtain the dates of workshops and deadlines for applications to reach the department.
