Our course provides you with social science research training and specialised education modules. You'll develop a critical understanding of research methods, educational issues, practice, evidence and theory. It is ideal preparation for doctoral research in education.

The course will enable you to relate debates and methodological principles in education research to broader issues in social science research and educational policy and practice.

It also provides you with opportunities to acquire the theoretical frameworks, knowledge, understanding, skills and aptitudes necessary to undertake advanced research in education.

You will be a member of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University (CfLaT). You are encouraged to contribute to our education research culture, participating in events such as seminars, research teas and project dissemination events.

We aim to produce graduates who can successfully proceed to research, education and teaching careers in Universities, the public sector, or the private sector.

The course is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as the first training year for students wishing to go on to study for a PhD under their 1+3 arrangements (Master's degree plus PhD).

Delivery

The course structure combines compulsory and optional modules which help you to engage with and evaluate educational theory and research. You will also be taught how to prepare and carry out a research proposal. The optional module and the dissertation topic can be chosen to relate specifically to your professional situation.

A variety of forms of assessment are used, carefully chosen to reflect the form of training provided. There are written assignments of 4,500-5,000 words but other forms are used such as:

The dissertation is assessed through a thesis of 15,000 words maximum.

Module timetables are flexible. We repeat many taught sessions to allow for those with personal and professional commitments. You can choose from daytime and early evening (4-6pm) sessions as well as a combination of compulsory and optional modules.

Some of our students choose to study full time and some choose to complete study over two years part time. If you are concerned about fitting study around full time work commitments it is worth contacting us to find out how this might work for you.

The taught aspect of the course runs from the final week of September through to the end of March. After this, dissertation study is by tutorial arrangement between you and your supervisor. This can be face-to-face or remote, to allow you to continue your study at home, elsewhere in the UK or overseas.

The Primary PGCE is built upon a consideration of the relationship between theory, practice and research, with 120 days spent on placements in partnership schools. This provides a firm foundation for the professional journey towards being an outstanding practitioner.

The course consists of school experience, primary professional studies and curriculum studies. The focus on professional studies and curriculum studies will prepare you to deliver the National Curriculum in school. You will cover: art; design and technology; English; geography; history; information and communication technology; mathematics; music; physical education; religious education; and science.

The time spent on placement builds your confidence and competence as a classroom practitioner.

The course benefits from positive and longstanding relationships with a number of partnership schools. This enables a wide range of experiences to be gained across a range of contexts. Course modules are firmly rooted in school and classroom practice.

The PGCE covers the five–11 age range.

You will undertake a combination of academic and professional study in order to achieve recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This includes successful completion of the National College for Teaching and Leadership's tests in numeracy and literacy prior to commencing the course.

During the PGCE you undertake 60 credits of Master's level modules. If you successfully pass all components, you graduate with the PGCE at Master's level and are recommended for QTS.

Students who pass the PGCE with QTS have the option to continue their studies on a part-time basis on the MEd Practitioner Enquiry. The MEd focuses on teaching and learning in school settings and draws on the experience you acquire through your day-to-day teaching. Students choosing this option benefit from fast-track entry, which enables them to complete the MEd Practitioner Enquiry in two years.

It is delivered by the education section of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences working in strong partnership with local primary schools. This partnership provides a wealth of experience and opportunities for critical reflection on practice.

The course covers all aspects of the primary school national curriculum and provides experiences of both Key Stages 1 and 2.

School placements are undertaken in each of the three terms. During these periods you take charge of the whole class for sustained and substantial periods, with support from an experienced teacher. The course is mostly structured around school term dates rather than university semesters.

Placements

You will spend 120 days of the PGCE year in a number of partnership schools. These placements include periods of teaching practice where school and university staff supervise progress towards Qualified Teacher Status.

Time is also spent learning about Diversity and Equality issues and Special Educational Needs in schools.

Research in the School of Medical Education focuses on how we better understand and improve education within the classroom and clinical context. We especially welcome MPhil applications that are innovative and creative.

You will be based within the School of Medical Education. You will have access to research teaching from the School and the Institute of Health and Society (IHS).

You will work with experienced researchers to develop a research proposal. Attendance at taught sessions will be in your first year of study and will be agreed between you and your supervisor, depending on the requirements of the research project. You are expected to undertake 40 hours of work per week if studying full-time, with an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days (including statutory and bank holidays).

Our research is focused on improving our knowledge and understanding of health professional education within classroom and clinical environments. Over the last decade, Professor James Tooley has conducted extensive research across the globe. This has documented the enormous potential of private schools. It showed that how they can serve the educational needs of the poor had been neglected and underestimated.

A key focus of the centre is Professor Sugata Mitra's research. This explores the potential of self organised learning in communities around the world. His earlier work includes the Hole in the Wall experiments. These experiments involved children with access to shared digital resources. It showed that with such access, they can learn to use computers and the internet. Furthermore, they can learn much more than what we thought possible without adult supervision.

During the PGCE you will undertake 60 credits of master's-level modules. The course modules are rooted in school and classroom practice. They work to complement your experiences - enhancing outcomes and your professional development.

You will graduate with a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) if you:

An understanding of the relationship between theory, practice and research underpins the PGCE. Two thirds of your time (around 130 days) is spent on placements in partnership schools. This provides a firm practical and theoretical foundation for the professional journey towards becoming an outstanding practitioner.

Training

During your training at Newcastle University you will:

-Develop the core knowledge, skills and understanding expected of newly qualified teachers

-Extend your awareness of effective teaching in your subject area through subject-based/curriculum studies

The course emphasis is on enhancing the learning, progress and welfare of young people. The research interests of our staff support these key interests.

Delivery

The course starts in early September and continues until June. The course structure follows school term dates in opposed to university semesters.

Newcastle University sessions take place throughout the year. You will need to attend group sessions every Friday during the first half of the course. Other learning, training and discussion opportunities include:

Placements

You will spend at least two thirds of the PGCE on school placements. Placements include periods of teaching practice and observation. This allows school and university staff to supervise your progress towards Qualified Teacher Status. You may also undertake subject-specific school visits to observe good practice and work-related challenges.

Newcastle University has positive and long-standing relationships with partnership schools across the North East. This helps us to provide you with a range of experiences across a range of contexts.

Trainees are usually placed in two schools. Where possible, these will provide contrasting experiences in respect of academic and behavioural demand.

On successful completion of the course you can continue your studies part time on our Practitioner Enquiry MEd. The MEd focuses on teaching and learning in school settings. It also draws on your day-to-day teaching experience.

Our PGCE graduates gain fast-track entry onto the course. This allows you to complete the Practitioner Enquiry MEd in two years.

The School Direct initiative is designed to give you the chance to learn 'on the job' in a school. You'll work as part of the teaching team from day one. You'll learning from experienced, practicing colleagues and immediately putting your new skills into practice.

As with the standard PGCE, you spend two thirds of your time in schools, undertaking two teaching placements. With the School Direct route your lead school arranges your placements. Placements are usually in schools within their alliance. You can find out more about placements during the application and interview process.

The course allows you to improve or update your knowledge and understanding of teaching English as a foreign or second language. It has a strong emphasis on:
-Language learning
-Interaction in second language classrooms and wider settings

-Engagement in learning and with technology

Our staff have experience of teaching around the world. They are actively involved in research and we incorporate relevant research findings into the course content. Dr Mei Lin leads the course.

By the end of the course you will be familiar with current developments in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). In particular, you will develop your knowledge of:

-Those without teaching experience (pre-service)

Research project

As part of the course you will carry out a research project. This encourages you to explore teaching and learning issues through collecting and analysing data. Our research methods module will provide you with a range of research tools and training.

To ensure a positive learning experience, a variety of support is available, focusing on:

Delivery

We deliver modules through a mix of:
-Lectures
-Seminars
-Workshops
-Group activities

Most modules last one semester. Teaching takes place during the day at our Newcastle campus. We don't deliver teaching over the weekend.

The course consists of three main parts:
-Compulsory modules (60 credits)
-Optional modules (60 credits)
-Research project (60 credits)

Optional modules include a wide range of modules in TESOL and applied linguistics, as well as linguistics and education. You can build the course to match your individual interests and/or future career needs.

We use a variety of teaching methods to:
-Support your learning experience
-Develop your learning potential
-Prepare you for real-world challenges

Interactive sessions encourage you to apply new knowledge, concepts and skills to your practice. Weekly independent study tasks allow you to engage with and contribute to sessions and seminars.

If you choose to study part time you will take up to 80 credits during your first year. During second year you will complete the remaining credits and conduct your research project.

The qualification meets the learning outcomes at Certificate level in the national higher education qualifications framework.

This Research Training PGCert is delivered at faculty level in an interdisciplinary environment and is relevant to students from a wide range of disciplines.

It is also open to international students in the second or third year of PhD courses in their own country who want to study abroad for a minimum of six months.
