Our MA Education has been designed to provide content and context that relates directly to the work of educational professionals in their settings including schools, colleges, universities and public sector organisations. All content and assignments are work-related, enabling you to consider the latest theoretical underpinning for the subject area selected relating to your work.

You can select from the following named routes:
-MA Education (Learning & Teaching)
-MA Education (Leadership)
-MA Education (Additional Learning Needs)
-MA Education (Youth and Community Work)
-MA Education (Counselling Skills for Education)
-or make their own selection of modules to achieve the generic MA Education award.

The MA Education (Additional Learning Needs) has two pathways. There are generic SEN/ALN modules or, candidates may elect to study the specific British Dyslexia Association accredited modules to achieve the Approved Teacher Status (ATS) and then the Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA) awards.

The MA Education has been designed to meet the requirements of the Welsh Government’s priorities for education and caters for a wide range of professionals who are involved in delivering education in a variety of organisations and related settings. Partners involved in the design of this programme included: local authorities; FE colleges; voluntary and community organisations, nurse educators; headteachers; teachers and current students.

Whatever setting you come from, you will be challenged to extend your thinking about the subjects you select, deepen your understanding of the content and theoretical foundations of the area and, be encouraged to reflect critically upon how this will impact on your practice. All assignments will be context related to enable you to implement many of the ideas discussed and to evaluate their success.

Key Course Features

-The course is designed in partnership with LEAs, local further and higher education and training providers, professional agencies and leading consultants.
-The MA provides Continuing Professional Development for professionals working in schools, further education and training, higher education and community and voluntary sectors.
-The course provides progression opportunities from undergraduate level by offering a number of exit points: single module, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and MA Education.
-The programme is accredited by the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).

What Will You Study?

The programme is structured to develop your skills and concepts incrementally through the following stages:
-Postgraduate Certificate stage: 1 core module: Mastering Professional Learning, and 1 option module.
-Postgraduate Diploma stage: 1 core module: Research Methodology and Enquiry in Education, and 1 option module.
-MA Education stage: A dissertation on an aspect of interest that you wish to explore.

This course is aimed at helping you to enhance the quality of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation in higher education. The programme of study is ideal for newly-appointed lecturers and researchers with teaching responsibilities. The aims of the course are to ensure that you are promoting a learning environment, applying and adapting theoretical conceptual frameworks in response to the changing context within the higher education sector and that you are able to encourage autonomous learning within the boundaries of professional practice.

Completion of the Supporting Student Learning in Higher Education will enable participants to gain professional recognition as Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) at Descriptor 1 of the UKPSF, which is the sector standard required of staff new to teaching in or support academic provision in higher education.

Completion of the full award (PgCPD) will enable participants to gain professional recognition as Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) at Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF, which is the sector standard required of teachers in higher education.

The aim of the course is to provide graduates with the opportunity to develop professional knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to become teachers, tutors and/or trainers in the learning sector and skills sector (post-compulsory education and training). They have been developed as a result of major changes in the requirements for teachers within the learning and skills sector.

This new and exciting course offers the prospect of teaching and assessing students across a breadth of curricula and provide an online learning capability that promotes flexibility through a variety of learning opportunities.Training builds upon your previous knowledge and experience and there is a strong emphasis on active learning.

You will gain a qualification enabling you to teach students in further education, sixth form and tertiary colleges, prisons, adult education and work-based learning settings.

-Teaching in the post-compulsory sector has undergone a period of professionalisation in recent years, and this award is now the nationally-endorsed qualification for the sector

Phase 2 considers extending your practice through creative and innovative strategies for teaching, learning andassessment and encourages wider reading and scholarly research to inform and underpin your practice.

This phase of the programme examines the role of a teacher in the learning and skills sector and the impact of national policies and strategies on subject-specific and organisational processes and practice. The concept of continuous professional development is explored as an ongoing process that extends beyond the course and into your career as a teacher in the learning and skills sector.
