With world-class research centres, purpose-built suites of laboratories, and a city surrounded by parkland and coastline, such as the Gower Peninsula where diverse habitats are located, Swansea really is an outstanding place to study, conduct research and make the most of student living.

Science at Swansea boasts of some of the most advanced facilities and equipment that students can use. From our fully equipped £1.3M custom-designed catamaran-class survey vessel which can carry 26 passengers for inshore or offshore research, to a £4.2M suite of laboratories and specialised culture facilities such as temperature rooms and greenhouses.

Research With a Real Impact

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), over 91% of our Faculty’s submission to the assessment, over 8 units, was classed as either ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’.

Earth Systems and Environmental Studies – We are delighted to have achieved 100% world-leading and internationally excellence ratings in both environment and impact due to the work of our growing department which has tripled in size in the last 7 years. An impressive 65% of our research publications have been classed as world-leading.

Geography and Environmental Studies – We are delighted that 90% of our research outputs have been recognised as world-leading and internationally excellent. 100% of the environment was rated as world-leading and internationally excellent, showing a thriving research community spanning human and physical geography.

Physics – Across experimental, applied, and theoretical physics 97% of our publications are world-leading and internationally excellent. Research impacts spanning cancer diagnostics, supercomputing, and public engagement have substantially grown to 50% world-leading. 100% of our Environment achieved world-leading and internationally excellent ratings.
