Durham offers unique opportunities for postgraduate study in Music. The department’s location in part of an ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site is complemented by state-of-the-art studio and music computing facilities, while the University and its colleges provide many opportunities for practical music making.
Our staff are leading figures in the fields of musicology, composition and performance. They offer expertise in a wide range of areas, including nineteenth- and twentieth century music, acoustic and electroacoustic composition, performance, ethnomusicology, aesthetics and cultural/critical theory. An international body of staff and students make our department an ideal environment for a creative and intellectually stimulating experience.
The Department hosts a wide range of annual workshops, seminars and international conferences, and runs MUSICON, the University’s public concert series, featuring annual concerts by internationally acclaimed artists in the fields of classical, jazz, contemporary and world music.
