The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a strong reputation for student achievement and success. Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their high-quality research in a number of areas of modern mathematics. The mathematical and computational sciences are among the major research strengths of XJTLU and our department is strongly committed to excellence in research and teaching.
The study of mathematics goes well beyond the improvement of a student’s numeracy skills, it emphasises the development of strong analytical decision-making, modelling, forward-thinking skills and the importance of logical reasoning. Such skills are essential in many domains and are appreciated and sought after. For this reason, a degree in mathematics is held in high esteem in many other professional fields providing opportunities to pursue a multitude of careers.

RESEARCH
Our research interests cover a wide range of mathematical problems including financial mathematics, pricing of financial derivatives, risk estimation, modern analyses, partial differential equations, biomathematics, discrete mathematics, fluid flows, dynamical systems, numerical methods, statistics and probability.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
Our mathematical sciences programmes are delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials, guided reading, private study, and both supervised and unsupervised practical work, which includes mathematical workshop practices as well as more involved projects. In researching your dissertation, you gain skills and experience which will be valuable to your future career. In undertaking your own research you will become an independent thinker who can efficiently and effectively work on challenging problems.
