This innovative course focuses on the development of a significant experimental animation production that synthesises research undertaken in areas such as drawing, live-action, drawing on film, under camera manipulation, stop-frame animation, pixilation and sound as art. A strong independent research base will underpin individual practice.

Challenging the parameters of film and video production, and identifying new approaches to the notion of art films will be encouraged, as will incorporating experimentation in production and post-production stages.

Animation is part of the Department of Media at Manchester School of Art which has an established community of interdisciplinary staff, and research students with expertise in fields that include Animation, Filmmaking, Photography, Media Theory and Multimedia Digital practices.

Course Content

The MA Animation is made up of four units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere, either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. ou will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Animation award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This route is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. This interdisciplinary subject explores the meanings and effects of visual images and ways of looking. Through its core elements, options and route specific seminars, the course examines the ways images are used and perceived in a society that is becoming increasingly saturated with visual technologies, and it explores the ways that images contribute to the formation of identities and social environments. You will be encouraged to engage with the subject using a theoretical, methodological and creative approach. The course provides opportunities for the production of a wide variety of academic writing as well as possibilities to develop critical thinking through visual practice. The course encourages a high degree of independent research that will culminate in either a dissertation or a project combining written and visual material. This course will appeal to applicants from a variety of backgrounds including art history, fine art, sociology and visual anthropology, those engaged in a range of careers such as lecturing, working in the cultural and heritage industries, and those looking to further develop their academic interests.

You will primarily use digital and analogue photographic technologies, but may also develop your practical skills through media such as moving image and bookbinding. Particular themes will explore photography in relation to context: portfolio, book art, gallery, screen and installed space. Students come from a range of disciplines and share a commitment to the exchange of ideas in a creative forum as a powerful way to learn. The Arts & Humanities Graduate School through the Manchester School of Art’s Research Centre, offers research degrees in the practices, professions, histories and theories of art and design and cognate disciplines. These can be studied on a full and part-time basis at Masters and PhD Level.

The Graduate School brings together the three different postgraduate research degree programmes in Manchester School of Art, Humanities Languages and Social Science and the Manchester Fashion Institute. By developing our strengths the merger presents a very real opportunity to signal the significance of public and outward facing research and the importance of multidisciplinary, collaborative, applied and practice-based research methods alongside traditional disciplinary approaches. MA by Research

Study undertaken at masters level runs for a year (full-time) and explores aspects of knowledge at the forefront of an academic or professional discipline. Students are expected to demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge, and to gain understanding of how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research. They will be able to deal with complex issues systematically and creatively.

A MA by Research thesis will not normally exceed 30,000 words (excluding ancillary matter such as footnotes). When the submission is accompanied by material in other than written form, the written component should normally be within 10,000 – 15,000 words.

At the heart of the Manchester Writing School are our Masters programmes in Creative Writing, available to study on campus in Manchester, and also from anywhere in the world via online distance learning.

On our Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programme, you will explore and practice techniques and styles of modern and contemporary writing and apply these through the development of your own full-length book. MFA students undertake all of the elements of our MA Creative Writing programme (a taught element blending writing workshops with reading units, an elective, and a dissertation), then take an additional unit about the publishing industry and submit a full-length manuscript: a completed novel, poetry collection, book for children or young adults, or book about place. The MFA is available to complete over two years full-time or three years part-time/online.

You will be introduced to professionals from the publishing industries – agents, editors, publishers and publicists – and the School has strong links with many major arts, educational and cultural organisations. Our MFA model is unparalleled in coaching students through the development and completion of a full-length book under the sustained guidance of distinguished, practising writers and seeing those students achieve success in publishing.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Successful trainees are in demand to teach this national shortage subject and these routes will equip you with the skills and experience to teach at GCSE and A/AS levels, also on vocational courses. You will specialise in one aspect of design and technology, either Resistant Materials, Food or Textiles, depending on your degree subject and will be trained to teach a minor subject that you will be teaching to Key Stage 3.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

We will consider applications from people without a degree directly related to D&T if you have relevant industry experience. Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free pre-entry Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for national priority subjects, including Design and Technology. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

This PGCE is available via University led and School Direct routes.

About the Course

This course will provide you with a critical framework for understanding recent developments in the Design and Technology curriculum. Taking account of your particular academic strengths and specialisms you will be prepared to teach National Curriculum Design & Technology and be equipped with an understanding of GCSE, A/AS Levels and vocational courses.

You will be supported in developing your subject knowledge through the use of a subject audit which identifies individual strengths and areas for development. Assignments and teaching experiences are designed to confirm your broad understanding of professional issues and confidence in your curriculum area.

As a major subject you will study either Food, Resistant Materials or Textiles Technology and support this with a minor subject study of either Food, Electronics or Textiles Technology.

This course includes:
-Practical sessions on aspects of the teaching and assessment of subjects within the Design and Technology curriculum area

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As intending teachers trainees begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. They begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

About the Course

Trainees will be introduced to different models of critical engagement and be involved in a number of gallery education workshops at various stages in the course. You will explore the relationship between curriculum development and assessment for and of learning in art, craft and design and particular concerns, such as drawing for different purposes and needs. In addition you will follow a series of workshops that embrace a range of art, craft, design and new media disciplines. You will be shown how to apply resulting insights in your teaching to the benefit of your pupils.

Much of your work will be undertaken in lecture-related seminars and small scale activity groups where the emphasis is on personal and professional development within the context of shared experiences and mutual support.

MA/MFA Design: Ceramics is concerned with the development of advanced craft and design practice. The course provides a complex and diverse territory for MA study. It is grounded in ceramics practice - the rich history of people and objects, social and political narrative – yet encourages students to question the roles and rituals of ceramics practice in today’s society.

There is opportunity for the exploration of both hands-on and digital innovation in the development of design, making and drawing practices. We encourage the pursuit of expertise and value through careful practical insights and personal intuition.

There is access to an extensive range of ceramics workshops and to a broad range of other material and print workshops as well as CAD/CAM workshops.

We have an interdisciplinary approach to designing and making with regular support and contact from specialist staff in ceramics. Collaboration with peers and engagement with external partners will be encouraged and supported.

Design Network

Based in the heart of the School of Art, MA/MFA Design: Ceramics is part of an innovative design network — a community of staff and students exploring design ideas in a discursive, cross-disciplinary studio environment. Critically informed practical designers, the group works experimentally, inspired by new insights and possibilities.

While studying towards a particular qualification at MA/MFA level, students experience their subject in the broader context of contemporary design practice.

Specialist Environment

Dedicated spaces for the postgraduate community have been developed to enable the postgraduate community to flourish. These spaces, for thinking and practice, are located centrally within the School of Art, allowing easy access to an extensive range of workshops where the combination of traditional and state of the art equipment opens up a world of exciting possibilities.

Course Content

The MA Design: Ceramics is made up of four units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Design: Ceramics award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This award is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

This course is concerned with the development of advanced craft and design practice. In essence, the course combines the handmade and digital approaches, which highlights and encourages new methods of practice being used with glass.

We seek to maintain and develop time-honoured glass processes in kiln work and glassblowing - skills that take many years to accomplish. We equally encourage the pursuit of the creative opportunities that new digital technologies provide.

There is access to a range of glass facilities and to a broad range of other 3D design and craft cultures, including those related to the design and/or making of domestic products, furniture, ceramics and jewellery.
