You should have (or expect to be awarded) an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in a relevant/related subject.
You might also be considered for some programmes if you aren’t a graduate or your degree is in an unrelated field, but have relevant experience and can show that you have the ability to work at postgraduate level.
Prior to entering higher education I worked as an IT lecturer for local colleges in Bedfordshire and spent some time travelling in Thailand, Australasia, Canada and the USA. Before attending Goldsmiths, I completed my BA in Social Anthropology at the University of Sussex. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, I felt my growing interest in the visual aspects of culture would be better developed by studying the MA course in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths. I hoped the creative, practical and theory-based styles of learning on this course would be a positive influence on my intellectual growth.
My experience so far has confirmed this and I have found the balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of the course really beneficial, in particular the way hands-on application of anthropologically focused concepts is encouraged. In addition to this, I have found the teaching on the course enlightening and exhilarating and the tutors open to lively debate and discussion. The atmosphere of the anthropology department is friendly and relaxed, and interdisciplinary interaction has helped me to achieve a broader understanding of the field of anthropology in general. The college is a particularly stimulating centre for study, since it reflects the diverse and multicultural nature of London. Also, its closeness to a wide range of important museums, libraries and other cultural establishments and events has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the course. The teaching and support I have received at Goldsmiths have greatly improved my self-confidence and I feel my time here will leave me with lasting benefits for the future, in terms of both intellectual and personal growth.
