Our MA by Research Typography and Graphic Communication course is a research-intensive programme that develops independent research and writing skills.

  • Flexible structure allows you to tailor the programme to your personal interests
  • Ideal preparation for higher study and self-directed research
  • Opportunity to work with the Department’s world-class collections and archives

What will you study?

Student work follows four modules. The first involves a series of seminars that cover key areas in typography, and build a foundation in critical reading and research methods. These seminars are shared with other master’s students, and include reading and discussion of key texts, and preparation of a presentation to peers.

The second module includes a series of essays on topics you select with the support of staff, aiming to cover working with both primary and secondary sources. You work on these independently, with individual feedback by relevant staff.

The third module involves the preparation of a PhD proposal, as an exercise in identifying research questions and critical writing skills. The fourth module comprises preparation and work for a substantial dissertation.

What career can you have?

This programme is the ideal preparation for starting or extending a career in teaching and research. It covers working with primary and secondary sources, and enables the production of academic texts that evidence the key requirements for higher study. By including the preparation of a PhD proposal within its curriculum the programme allows graduates to apply for admission to PhD programmes directly after graduation.
