COURSE SUMMARY

Delivered for over forty years, our MSc in Transport Engineering and Planning is recognised as a strong postgraduate qualification for students interested in the management, engineering and planning of transport infrastructure.

Shaped by industry and real-world relevance, the course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Structural Engineers, Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Highways & Transportation) as fully satisfying requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Our membership of the national Universities Transport Partnership ensures that course content and skill development reflect industry needs.

The course is open to applicants from a wide range of relevant backgrounds. It is especially beneficial if you are interested in developing your career with an engineering consultancy, local and central governments planning department, or passenger transport authority.

TEACHING

The course combines formal lectures and seminars with extensive coursework including transport planning studio work, traffic survey projects, appraisal assignments and statistics tutorials. The teaching panel includes visiting specialists with expert knowledge of specific topics. During your studies, you'll be exposed to a range of relevant transport software.

You can choose full-time or part-time study. The part-time route is designed to fit around existing commitments and can used by employers as a graduate training programme.

ASSESSMENT

The course is delivered using a combination of lectures, tutorials, design projects, computing sessions, and laboratory demonstrations. You'll be encouraged to attend meetings of the professional institutions, where relevant topics are being discussed. Where possible, site visits and guest lectures will also be organised.  

The overall breakdown is:

  • Examination: 50%
  • Coursework: 50%

CAREER PROSPECTS

The postgraduate qualification is highly valued by employers. Many course alumni have progressed to roles in local authorities, consultancies and transport utilities. Some graduates also choose to apply their knowledge and skill working on transport projects overseas.

The MSc award is approved as further learning for students and professionals working towards Chartered Engineer status. The  programme team maintains close contacts with local employers and professional institutions to ensure content and learning outcomes remain relevant to industry needs.
