About the course

Applied biomedical science is a field of study that seeks to apply advances in basic research, to develop new diagnostic tools, therapies and preventive strategies for human diseases. Subjects covered by the course include clinical trials management, genomics, personalised medicine, bioinformatics and population health research.

The course is aimed at students with an undergraduate degree in biomedical science or a related bioscience discipline. Previous participants have also joined with qualifications in biotechnology, dentistry, medicine, pharmacology and pharmacy. Good writing skills and a fundamental understanding of molecular biology, genetics and arithmetic are beneficial.

Doing a Masters in Translational Medicine enabled me to gain expertise in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and genomics. Undertaking a 6-months research project allowed me to cultivate essential laboratory skills to become a more confident and competent researcher in cell and molecular biology. I think that the field of Translational Medicine is extremely interesting and lets you combine wet-lab work with clinical practice, giving a more polyhedric aspect to research. What I enjoyed the most about studying it was the possibility of acquiring competency and being exposed to different branches of this incredible medicine field. Gaining new knowledge in genetics, bioinformatics, personalised medicine techniques, and clinical trials has been helpful to understand what I most liked about this field and where I wanted to continue with my career. I strongly recommend undertaking this course for the variety of taught programs as well as research projects it offers.

The MSc has opened my eyes to many areas of research such as personalised medicine, genomics, clinical trials, drug discovery and development, and population health. Each one provided expertise in their respective field and allowed me to acquire a new perspective in the field of translational medicine on how to make an impact and take something from bench to bedside.

To be eligible for a scholarship you must:

Have made an application for a postgraduate Master’s course, either full-time or part-time study, by the deadlines stated above

Not already be qualified at a Master’s level or above (e.g. PhD)

Be self-funding your course fees or in receipt of a tuition fee loan (courses funded by the NHS or students receiving employer or sponsor funding are not eligible)

Have, or be predicted, a 2:1 or above or international equivalent

Application Procedure

There is no separate application process to apply. If you are a Home or International applicant applying for a taught postgraduate Master’s course which has a scholarship, you will be automatically considered for the scholarship, provided you submit your course application by the deadline below.

You must ensure your course application is completed and submitted by the deadline in order to be considered. This means your application must contain all relevant supporting documentation required by the programme applied to, such as your references contact detail, transcripts, and English language test results.

Your referees will be contacted at the point of submission, so we encourage you to apply before the deadline in order for us to obtain your references in time. Alternatively, you will need to request for your referees to complete their reference for you on the same day as you submit your application.

For some of our direct entry courses you may be invited to an in-person or virtual panel interview, which will form part of the scholarship criteria.

All successful applicants will be contacted before 1 July 2024.
