The Salford MBA (Master of Business Administration) is our flagship programme, a fully high-level degree that concentrates on developing the wide-ranging leadership and business management skills that you need to thrive at a senior level, whatever sector you work in.

Delivered in a blended format, this programme combines online and on campus study and includes a work-based consultancy project and an international study visit.

The programme is highly industry-focused.

You will draw on your previous management experience to join in online and face to face discussion with tutors and fellow students, then use the scholarship and research to reflect your learning back into the workplace. Our broad range of modules and unique business partnerships make this programme an ideal option for ambitious executives who are seeking to improve their knowledge across a full range of advanced skill sets.

For two days each month, you will come to Salford for intensive study. During this face to face time on campus, you will meet both academics and fellow students. While here, you will follow a study programme but this is also your opportunity to share your experiences, learn from your peers and develop your professional network in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Your studies culminate with the Business Innovation Live Project. You will choose one of four options to look at a real industry problem and provide researched solutions, helping you put your learning into practice.

The Strategic Leadership pathway is our generalist career development programme aimed at motivated professionals who wish to broaden their business knowledge and reach for a senior position.

You will:

  • Develop the management skills required for success at a senior level
  • Learn flexibly with a blended format
  • Benefit from close links with industry throughout

This course is for you if:

  • You have managerial experience and wish to specialise
  • You want to improve your employability
  • You want to study while you work
  • You enjoy collaborative learning
  • You like to put learning into practice
  • You are a critical thinker and enjoy problem solving

Course Details

The MBA is delivered in a blended format taught in four 15-week modules plus a work-based project and an overseas study visit. For each of the four modules, you will attend online lectures and seminars supported by six compulsory days (two per month) on campus at Salford. In addition, you will be expected to undertake independent study and project work in your own time with online support through the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

You’ll finish your year with a three to six month work-based consultancy project based around an issue within either your own or another organisation. In April, you will have a one week overseas study visit (in 2018, this was in Colombia – see what our students said about the visit ) with an intensive schedule of visits to range of organisations who are implementing the theories and practices you are learning.

There is a series of out-of-the-classroom activities such as company visits and guest speakers which help you to develop your professional network.

Visit the website for further information on modules.

Teaching and Assessment

Our staff are experts who have experience of working in the real world as well as University, so our teaching is strongly industry-focused and industry-informed. We will challenge you and support you to build the business management skills that you need to thrive at a senior level.

You will learn through a combination of online lectures, online seminars and on campus tutorials, supplemented by a range of learning activities such as industry visits and guest speakers. The course includes a one week international study trip to develop your awareness of national and international business.

There is a strong emphasis on active learning. Prior to each online lecture, students are provided with videos, examples and suggested readings via the virtual learning environment (VLE); these form the prior knowledge around which the different activities will focus each week. In addition, there are online activities and out-of-the-classroom events such as company visits and guest speakers. In the final semester, you will work on a Business Innovation Live Project, acting as a consultant to your own or an external organisation, providing advice and solutions for a real business problem.

Normally, each module involves two pieces of assessed work. Types of assessment include: essays, assignments, exams, multiple-choice tests, online tests, group reports and portfolio work. The Business Innovation Live Project is assessed through a final report and presentation.
