Background and why study for an MBA?
Originally I worked in the City, in Finance. If you are looking at my career as two halves, that was the first half. The second half has been involved in a family business which is in recruitment, which is for recruiting health care staff, which we supply to various organisations throughout Kent. And I've being doing that for the last half of my career up until now, so the last 15 years.
The reason for coming on an MBA was because increasingly the business I'm in is becoming more and more competitive, there's opportunities where we would like to diversify into certain areas, and I think all those things couple together, I just felt that I would prefer to have an increased my skill set to take advantage of these opportunities that are coming forward and also to have this in readiness for any potential move in the market, for example expansion. So it's basically gaining skills sets.
I looked at the MBA because I think it gives you an all-round approach to business as a whole. There might be certain elements that don't really apply to me, but as I'm doing the course now I can see where things tie in with what I'm doing or what I'm thinking, or are quite relevant to the opportunities I'm looking at. So that was the reason for choosing the MBA. Obviously, the executive format allowed me to combine the MBA with my work.
How did you come to realise you wanted to study an MBA?
I wanted to extend my knowledge across all areas of business.
Why did you choose to study for an MBA at KBS?
It has a great reputation and it’s local to me, making studying part-time easier to manage with work and home commitments.
What advice would you give to those thinking about studying while working full time?
The MBA at Kent University is structured to help part-time students manage work commitments around the teaching. This is achieved by studying a different subject in a week block. Assignments and exams were planned in advance which enabled me to manage my diary at busy times of the year.
How do you think an MBA will enhance your career/job?
An MBA qualification is highly regarded in all businesses around the world and within academia which will help me develop my career further.
What is the most valuable thing you learned from your MBA?
The connections and friendships with other businessmen and women on the course have been one of the things I most value. Peer to peer learning was actively encouraged and the debates we had added to my overall knowledge.
