Terrorism is one of the most pressing social issues of our times. On this Masters course, you’ll debate issues relating to terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation and the impact on society. You’ll investigate terror threats and how counter-terrorism policies affect local communities.   

You’ll apply theory and a critical approach to understanding terrorism: historical dimensions, its changing forms and the meaning of terrorism in 21st century. 

This course offers valuable insight for a range of careers concerned with crime prevention, counter terrorism, community support and shaping policy. You’ll enhance your knowledge and career prospects through this qualification.

The uniqueness of this course is that you’ll work with experts in sociology and criminology offering a critical examination of terrorism, crime, global security and the impact that tackling terrorism is having on local communities.

Our robust training in research methods will support those wanting to pursue further doctoral research. 

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: MA Terrorism, Crime and Global Security

Part-time study

This course can be taken part-time over three years. You’ll take one module per semester and a final year dissertation. 

Distance learning

We offer face-to-face teaching with virtual learning, allowing you to fit your studies around work and personal commitments.

Work placements

Employability is embedded throughout the course and you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation project within your place of work or volunteer within an organisation, business or government department relating to the issues covered on the MA course.  

Course content

In addition to subject specific knowledge, you’ll learn to write constructive, analytical arguments and develop strong IT skills. You’ll receive a robust training in research methods and undertake research in an area of interest.  

On the successful completion of each academic year of study (60 Level 7 credits), students will have the option to either progress to the next year of study or leave the programme with the qualification that reflects the total amount of Level 7 credits successfully completed. Available qualifications are as follows:

  • Year 1 Postgraduate Certificate in Terrorism, Crime and Global Security (60 credits)
  • Year 2   Postgraduate Diploma in Terrorism, Crime and Global Security (120 credits)
  • Year 3   MA in Terrorism, Crime and Global Security (180 credits)
