The MA TESOL is studied full-time at our Sheffield campus. Whether you are in the early stages of your language teaching career or an experienced language teacher, you study as part of the TESOL Centre's community of expert teachers, teacher trainers, and language learners. You work with specialist advisers for your assignments and boost your use of language in English language classes.

During your time in the UK, you

  • have the opportunity to take the Trinity College Cert in TESOL an internationally-recognised initial teaching qualification which includes 6 hours of supervised teaching practice
  • develop and enhance your understanding of language, language learners and language learning research
  • reflect on your previous language learning, share the experiences of others and develop techniques to improve the learning of your own students
  • critique and develop your classroom practice, syllabus design, lesson planning, teaching materials, and tests
  • experience the ways that a critical and reflective approach to your own teaching practice improves your skills
  • develop your academic language
  • boost your skills, knowledge and confidence to shape and achieve your future teaching career
  • prepare for future job applications with your employer-friendly professional development portfolio
  • become a part of a caring and progressive community of language teaching professionals

While in Sheffield, you experience a wide range of teaching activities: interactive workshops, guided observations, collaborative lesson planning, teaching with classmates, individual tutorials, discussion forums, video lectures, guided reading, and participation in lectures.

You can also attend English for Academic Purposes sessions, delivered in our British Council-accredited TESOL Centre throughout the course. You will experience current approaches to language teaching while learning the skills needed to succeed on the course in your dedicated MA TESOL group.

Your employability as an English language professional is key to the thinking behind the course, which has been designed in dialogue with international English language teaching professional competencies frameworks.

Scholarships may be available to support your studies. Find out more information about the Sheffield Hallam Transform Together Scholarships or financial support available from the British Council.
