Course content

This programme is designed for teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or those working in a related profession who are:-

• keen to build on existing knowledge and experience;
• interested in improving career prospects;
• planning to take up a more senior position in their institution;
• interested in researching their own teaching or applying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD/EdD)
after completing a Masters programme.

Course Content

This course comprises three 20-credit core modules, plus a further four 15-credit elective modules and a dissertation.

The core modules currently offered are:-

The Language Learner and Language Learning
Applied Linguistics for TESOL
Developments in TESOL Methodology

Up to eight elective modules will be offered each year, depending on recruitment. One of the two electives may be chosen, by negotiation, from electives offered by the School of Education, the School of English Studies or the Centre for English Language Education. Electives will normally be run only for a minimum of eight students.

Each 20-credit modules is assessed by a written assignment of 3,500-4,000-words or equivalent.

The dissertations is an original piece of work and should be 12,000-15,000 words (or their equivalent) in one of the selected modules or an approved topic.

Course Structure

The MA in TESOL can be completed over 1 year of full-time study or part-time over 2-4 years.

We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL.
