Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (Distance Learning) MA

Course content

The MA TESOL is studied part time through our online virtual learning environment. Whether you are an experienced English language teacher who wishes to undertake pedagogical development through work-based learning or also wish to develop your full career potential, the course helps you achieve your aspirations. You study as part of the TESOL Centre's community of expert teachers, teacher trainers, and researchers. You gain a qualification that is increasingly necessary for progression to senior teaching, academic and management posts both in the UK and overseas.

Flexible and dynamic learning online enables you to fit your study around your own personal and professional commitments. You will be able to deliver continuing professional development workshops to pass on the skills and knowledge gained.

During the course, you

  • develop and enhance your understanding of language, language learners and language learning research;
  • critique and develop your classroom practice, syllabus design, lesson planning, teaching materials, test design
  • experience the ways that a critical and reflective approach to your own teaching practice improves your skills
  • investigate dilemmas, identifying and exploring relevant reading to inform your own research and practice
  • develop experience in the methodologies that underpin educational research
  • boost your skills, knowledge and confidence to shape and achieve your future teaching career
  • become a part of a caring and progressive community of language teaching professionals

Because no face-to-face attendance is required, you become part of an online community via discussion, collaboration and sharing work and experiences. This gives you CPD opportunities beyond your own workplace. You are provided with input from VLE module sites through a combination of video lectures, guided reading, online seminars and forums for discussion.

Scholarships may be available to support your studies. Find out more information about the Sheffield Hallam Transform Together Scholarships or financial support available from the British Council.
