Teacher Training PGCE (Secondary)

Course Description

If you’re looking for a lifelong, challenging and exciting career using your degree subject knowledge or experience, teaching may be for you. The university awards secondary teaching PGCEs in eight core subjects: mathematics, modern foreign languages, religious education, physical education, biology, chemistry and physics.

This one-year programme aims to help you become a competent and effective teacher of your subject within the 11-18 age range. You will spend 26 weeks in at least two schools, where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers. You will return to central provision at regular intervals throughout the year for professional development and subject pathway seminars.

The university works closely with the Gloucestershire Association of Secondary Heads to provide a school-based programme with academic rigour. The partnership is well established, with the aim of recruiting and training high quality teachers for Gloucestershire and beyond. The school-based nature of the programme is at the forefront of current thinking in teacher education and offers broad experience in a highly supportive and committed framework.

The subject pathway sessions were particularly good as the course leader not only had a many years of experience teaching my subject, but he also ensured we all knew and felt comfortable with all aspects of school life, from parents’ evenings and marking to using outside agencies.”
