Systemic Family Therapy (MSc)

Course Description

Programme Information

The MSc runs part-time over 24 months and is accredited by the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. Successful completion of the course makes graduates eligible for UKCP registration.

On completion you will have gained:
• an in-depth, specialist knowledge of techniques relevant to professional practice as a systemic family therapist
• a deeper understanding of the techniques applied to, and the reflexive relationships between, theory and practice in systemic family therapy
• the opportunity to work with client preferences and strengths (individuals and groups of people/families) who hold different perspectives and may be drawn to different actions
• the skills to work with more severe emotional/behavioural/situational presentations, and with cases that contain multiagency complexity
• an appreciation of individual psychological development and family life cycle and the way in which these stages impact upon, and are influenced by, significant others
• the ability to view people and their difficulties in the context of interpersonal relationships and wider institutional and cultural discourses
• the ability to design a viable research study and analyse data using appropriate research methods and potentially contribute to improving systemic practice

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a professional qualification in mental health (some exceptions may be made on the basis of experience); be working in an appropriate NHS or voluntary organisation related to mental health; have regular therapeutic contact with clients, and have passed an intermediate course in family therapy or equivalent. IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.5 in all components if English is not your native language.
